how much energy does this generator produce in terms of watts or volts? Havent been able to find that info

Hey, Im Christian, the designer and we use a 90v Grin motor controller originally designed for electric bikes. We are doing tests, but power generation is largely dependent on use case and the size of kite. With the depower engaged, reeling in line uses very little energy. In the end you have a machine that uses power more efficiently, like a hybrid car uses regen brakes.

@@Ocean_Kite_Energy ah ok I see, so this is less for power generation and more keeping available power from draining as quickly. Gotcha. However, would this still work as a viable power generator for non-boat related power consumption?

For sure, You could either go fast, or produce a lot of power. When you make power you basically exchange speed for electricity. This is just a prototype, I think you can see at some point the kite pulls hard enough to lift the whole engine, and almost pull out the 500lb anchors. This gives you an idea of the power of a relatively small kite in test conditions @@wol5fe

as i have thought of this as a boat kite ,i always thought you could just keep backing the motor to fly it.this being the possible saving grace of the doldrums if you can get the kite up to the level of the wind.it might be 1000ft up or more so the reels and line will need to be heavy enough to take the strain and static weight.the other concern to my mind is once its in the wind and ripping you along, you have to be able to "shorten sail"for sea conditions or arrival at destination in gale force wind conditions.i think a center control line that will pull in the center of the kite maybe the answer.i haven't finished it yet,but can't wait to get er done.......

David, you are definitely right, and what also helps in low wind days is a drouge, or underwater parachute to prevent the boat from moving down wind with you. You can "shorten" or reef the sail by pulling the depower which changes the AoA of the kite. I love the wing.it system, but I thought regen provisions would be a boon, and on top of that, automatic and manual control, incase something goes wrong or there is a loss of power. Always gotta have contingency plans

Awesome project! Is it only generating power when the kite is going out and reeling out line or will it also generate power wgen its going in cirkles or figurer 8s?

You can! but you would need to be on a moving platform, ideally an electric boat with a propeller. The prop would spin as you go down wind and charge up the batteries
