It's the future. Yes, a bigger kite would drive the boat faster it's still in the development stages. Soon we will see kites pulling foiling boats, that will be a game changer.

I could see this being adopted in the commercial sector as an assist. As for a 12m power boat, probably not. How do you steer . You'd never get anywhere

Seems like a larger kite should be used for pulling a boat. The boat has 800 hp, but the kite is the size to pull a person?
@denbecr49
@denbecr49 4 года назад
A kite that size yanks and lifts a human easily. It has to be built sturdier when used against greater resistance and at higher altitudes where the winds are stronger. The pull quadruples when you double the windspeed and quadruples again when you double the kite speed. That's why they are flown high up and in a constant figure 8 motion. The system is being demonstrated on this boat, but not necessarily to equal its performance on engine power. These systems are sold as emergency power and as assistance to lower fuel consumption. A round older type military parachute can be bridled to fly as a kite that can to pull a car out of a ditch or a tree out by its roots.

Cool control box. Seems to me this would make more $$ producing energy than towing a boat.
@WelcomeToMyDream

Good idea. How about two kites, so that at least one is always pulling to provide the energy to reel the line in for the one that is just coasting. Hell, you could do both! Tow the boat and make electricity.

Interesting, but to be useful it will need to demonstrate more capabilities -wind speed range for common kites and custom kites. Common kites can stay airborn at lower wind speed but will blowout with the force of gusts. Custom kites have strength for high wind but the weight is hard to control and keep aloft. -Need the ability to sail in directions other than downwind. To have emergency value it will need upwind ability -far more difficult force and drag parameters, not to mention waves.

Nice idea , would love to use this system. On the other hand the mentioned fuel consumption is exaggerated , possibly for top speed , not 5knots for sure. Also I guess as sailboats do adjust their sail area, you will need different size kites for different windspeed.

Insufficient information .The 100 liters per hour doesnt state the speed the boat does but assuming that is 15 MPH thats about 3/4 gallon per mile . Not clear is the engine system is it out-drive z drive or rudder with prop direct shaft drive or other .The rudder type can supply steering but z drive has little or no steering abilities making only downwind sailing uncontrolled steerage so not a lot of use to most people .These class of boats often have v shape front with flat rear sections for planning and have little or no grip to sidewards forces making any attempt to go sidewards to the wind futile as the boat would merely drift sidewards from kite pulling it .Also for the kite to pull a boat such as sail boat with keel to resist sidewards drift the mounting point of the kite would need to be midships not like this example where mounted in the bow section can only sail downwind .Interesting with modifications to boat with lee boards bigger kite suitable rudder for tracking sidewards to the wind as well as downwind for fuel saving .However this class of boat driven with engine at 4.5 knots would probably use a lot less than 100 liters per hour more like 10 liters per hour so might be just much cheaper to just turn down the speed while on engine power .I would like the sytem for suitble motor boat as sail boats have such bad room compared to motor boats but hate the fuel bills

Not shown is how wide the window is with these maneuverable kites. They can be flown off to the side of direct downwind by at least 120 degrees in my experience with boats and trikes. Rudders and keels improve their crosswind performance of course and allow for upwind tacking.

I think a Parafoil is the wrong kind of kite for this. Maybe a Delta kite would be better.
@denbecr49
@denbecr49 4 года назад
A parafoil has no heavy frame and has a true high camber double surface airfoil cross section. They are always chosen for the best traction purposes.
@cactuscosyusa
@cactuscosyusa 4 года назад
@@denbecr49 Delta Kites are almost the same as Hang Gliders, but with less framework, they are also very stable and don't dive like a Parafoil or a Sled Kite, they fly in extremely light wind and have very good pulling power.
@denbecr49
@denbecr49 4 года назад
@@cactuscosyusa I have been making and buying traction kites for 37 years and have flown every type I can borrow. The first experimenters have always started with framed kites and quickly gave up on them. Nowdays designers know enough not to bother. Framed kites don't scale up well, for one. They get too heavy quickly and require higher windpeeds just to lift themselves. Notice the successive winners for largest kite have long been frameless parafoil types. Traction kites have no reason to fly in light winds when there is not enough power to harvest productively, so deltas have no advantage even at their own ideal scale. All kite based power sports (upskiing, kiteboarding, kiteskiing, kite skateboarding, kite kayaking, kite buggying, kite biking etc.) and all scales of kite boating have gone through years of refinement and competition with each other. They are all frameless and nearly all are parafoils and sleds except for the single skin niche market NASA foil oddity. In all my experience, parafoils pull much harder than deltas because they have a true relatively low speed high lift airfoil section like an STOL airplane wing. Landsailers and iceboats are far faster with those vertical double surface wings than with delta- like single surface sails. Polar expeditions use parafoils to tow heavy sleds full of supplies and gear. I don't know what you mean by "they are very stable and don't dive". Even with single line kites, there is no problem with stability of large foils and sleds. Stability and maneuverability are tradeoffs in kite design. Single line kites are designed for stability, with dihedral for example, but deltas are still more likely to overfly, wander laterally and glide forward leaving lots of slack in the line, losing control til the slack is taken in one way or another. Maneuverable traction kites always use anhedral for quicker respone to control inputs. Lift increases greatly when kites are kept in motion to increase airspeed over the lifting surfaces for more traction, so stability is almost never needed as they are always being steered. Deltas are notoriously difficult to handle on short lines. They thrash around like roped cattle when being reeled in. For these large watercraft, reeling in and docking a delta would be like trying to land a marlin. Depowering and gentle recovery are characteristics of sleds especially, and foils are much more docile with their brake lines pulled in than deltas. When have you ever seen a four line delta? It just doesn't work well with a frame, except for those designed bilaterally independent like Revolution brand stunters that are certainly not suitable for traction. There's just no contest.
@koborkutya7338
@koborkutya7338 3 года назад
@@denbecr49 Do you see a possible future for traction kites to be used in long distance ocean racing like Transat or VG as a sail option? I followed Vandee Globe this year (2020-21) and I saw boats adding a lot of extra miles because they could not efficiently sail dead downwind while their optimal route would have been just that. Also, I thought that a kite would have pulled them through some high pressure zones using higher altitude winds.
@denbecr49
@denbecr49 3 года назад
@@koborkutya7338 I see a future in it for unlimited racing categories, establishing Guinness world records, etc. but even though it could increase speeds overall, it may increase the variables enough to obscure the skill differences among the competitors, at least until the hardware becomes closer to standardized. I'm not much of a racing fan or particularly knowledgeable about the vicissitudes of altitude variations, in the practical range, over water. Recumbent bikes were such an advantage over uprights that old vs new records would be incongruent, and tactics (like pelotons & drafting your competitors) were ineffective etc., so recumbents were banned from the sport. I don't know whether traction kites might be prohibited in sailing races for similar reasons. I certainly encourage giving them their own categories.

@lmack3024
@lmack3024 4 года назад
Idk the data on boat draft and drag etc, but a 7 or 13sq m sail might actually be plenty of area at a higher altitude. Winds tend to be stronger and less turbulent, and that figure-8 pattern you see them doing increases wind speed along its surface. 4.5 knots speed in 5-9 knot wind is nothing to sneeze at for sure

Can someone message me about this. I have been talking with Bering yachts to add a sail or parachute to cut fuel costs and extend range. Im going to build the B80, its a heavy full displacement with 6000+nmrange with diesel but if I can add some wind power during the initial build phase, even if it only saves 20% fuel, that is close to a quarter of a million dollars of fuel saving year. There are options including AI design. Bering is new and very flexible. I have money to invest in new industry.
@jasonmatthers2286
@jasonmatthers2286 2 года назад
Yeah I can message you about this. There is this great invention called the sailboat. It has actually been around a lot longer than motorboats. The shape of the hull is optimized for sailing and you can even adjust the sail area depending on wind speed. Range is unlimited. You can do your 6000nm for FREE. Hope that helps buddy!
@BrettMoore66
@BrettMoore66 2 года назад
@@jasonmatthers2286 Totally Hilar5ious. Would you take a sail boat to some of the most extreme regions of the world ? And how do you make the wind blow the direction and strength you want ? what's that ? You cant, because sail boats use their motors a lot more than their sails. And.. if I wanted a tiny fragile vessel, id get a CE-B plaining hull. I do the math, I cant make a full displacement move magically faster against the bow wake. But what I can do is run a pilot sail out front, that might take some pressure off the engines, extending my range from 6000+NM to perhaps even double that. I can afford fuel, and actually, hybrid engines are starting to look even better. But on a serious note.. I have played with hull designs vs weight vs speed, vs interior space, vs strength (cyclone or hurricane) bla bla bla.. so yes I did look at many hull designs even duel and tri hull ships but what I want my vessel for requires a trawler and close to 75 - 80 ft. There are pros and cons of every hull shape, material, designs and so forth. I happen to like steel hulls and I like Berings 40% overbuild. But is there anything wrong with wanting to cut my fuel costs and extend my range ? So as there is a 3 year weight on build.. I've put my plans on ice for a few months whilst I reconsider my options and what I really want in the next ten years, and what the world might look like in ten years. So again.. back to Trawler as they are also like an ocean going bunker, and hold enough to keep any prepper happy. Fuel.. sail boats need that too but have limited range when relying on fuel vs wind. You cant just drift around the ocean on the currents hoping for wind to come along. You might find the wind blowing in the opposite direction assuming you are not just following trade winds :-) I think every boat purchaser goes through these anxieties and plans. Also.. trawlers being heavy, do not need a lot of stabilisation !
@jasonmatthers2286
@jasonmatthers2286 2 года назад
@@BrettMoore66 Yes I would rather take a sailboat as I have done before. I can assure you I did not use the motor more than the sails. I can't make the wind blow the direction and strength I want but I can adjust trim and sail size. If it were a problem, sail boats wouldn't cross oceans. We already know what the prevailing winds are in different latitudes. You wouldn't take your motorboat east to west around antarctica would you? Plenty of expedition yachts SAILING around antarctica anyway...
