In today's video I show you the method I used to take my Zenith Cruzer's dull, grooved, pitted aluminum landing gear and transform it into a mirror like surface.

It's amazing how you can turn a scratch and pitted piece of aluminum into such a beautiful piece of mirrored artwork. Nice job, Mark. As always, love watching your videos!!!

When I did bizjet detailing all I ever used on the leading edges and other brightwork was Nuvite. That stuff is worth the little bit more that it costs than other polishes. A random orbit Porter Cable was the other thing that really made the planes look great. No swirl marks which become really obvious in the sunlight. Polishing metal is a lot of hard messy work (especially the bigger planes like Gulfstreams and Global Expresses) but it is so satisfying once you're done.

I like the 5k grit finish better I think! Very clean and modern looking.

I did like that look too, but for my taste, I wanted it like a mirror!

I am inspired. My 750STOL will be flying soon. I think I will take the gear off and make this a winter project. I was also thinking about polishing the slots and controls surfaces, but I am more interested in getting the thing flying first. Maybe I will polish more on my next build. Great video.

Looks great! I just went through a similar process with my grove gear for my Kitfox due to surface corrosion. I wanted to be sure I didn't remove material to the point that it degraded the safety of my gear. I cleaned the corrosion off with the scotchbrite and took 14 readings at predetermined points with micrometers. I went with a 240, 320, 400, and 800 sandpaper followed by a quick wipe down with some Flitz (following your recommendation on a previous video!). I took measurements again at the exact same points and found that on average I removed .0013" of material. Probably nothing you were concerned about but figured I'd share my findings! Full write up on my build blog-search my username on TeamKitfox Forums if you're interested. Thanks for the videos!!

I really appreciate the positive comments. I'm afraid when people see my airplane in person it's not going to be as nice as it looks on the videos!

Looks very nice. Do you put anything on it now , or will you have to polish it frequently?

No I didn't put anything on it. I figure once a year I'll spend a nice evening with the hangar door open, the summer breeze flowing in, and me polishing the gear!

Yeah yeah, way late to the party... Didn't know if you would be doing this on the SD build, but just in case, a friend introduced me to the fact that they have DA sanding discs from 40 grit all the way to 8000 grit. I was doing 2000 wet on a car by hand and he asked if I enjoyed doing things the hard way. I'm not sure how flat the main surface of the gear is, but it could save some time, and your arm.

MX after 30 That would prob be easier, but on the SD I’ll be painting the gear legs Army green to match the fuselage.
