Paramount Studios - 1953
Produced and Directed: William Wyler
Story and Screenplay: Dalton Trumbo
Music: George Auric
Costumes: Edith Head
Cinematography: Henri Alekan and Franz Planer
Starring: Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck and Eddie Albert
All footage of Roman Holiday is entirely the property of Paramount Pictures. I make no claim to it at all.
What more can you say about this film than 'They Got It Right'. I believe some pack of fools remade this in the late 80's but don't bother. Some films, some stories, need to be left just as they are.

I saw a meet-the-fans interview with Gregory Peck: talking about Roman Holiday, he said that Cary Grant had turned it down because the male lead wasn't the central figure in the film. He also said that he insisted that Audrey Hepburn's name be put above the title, along with his: "She's going to win an Oscar for this and I'm going to look pretty stupid and arrogant if her name isn't there along with mine"

I don't think that I am first person to notice that almost all the leading men in Audrey Hepburn's movies were quite a bit older than her, some of them approaching middle age - i wonder why.

It's a male-run industry, wish fulfillment thing - and some of the more independent Big Name actors didn't like it. Cary Grant got tired of it. When James Stewart was cast as Kim Novak's love interest in "Bell, Book, and Candle" the age difference bothered him enough to make him quit doing romantic roles permanently. Side note: he'd played Novak's love interest the year before in "Vertigo." When he told Hitchcock he was old enough to be Novak's father, Hitchcock agreed, and told him that would make his character seem desperate and pathetic - which worked in the film. In a perfect world, Taron Egerton's romantic co-star would be Judi Dench or Vanessa Redgrave.

+JuliaAustralian Thank you again! You know, it had been quite a while in between viewings for this film and I was so struck by how marvellous it was - there is so much heart in it.

My favorite all time movie. forever. Anya’s yearn for freedom from her hectic schedule is something we all can relate to! though this one hits home to my heart since I have a yearning to give everything up and take a flight somewhere without letting anyone know and just enjoy life. I guess I mixed in with Anya and Holly Golightly. Nonetheless, the film is just pure perfection.

I love your reviews and am so glad I found you. I forgot about the hand in the carving, it was so real - Audrey Hepburn did it so well. A wonderful actress and a wonderful human being.

2:03 "You spent the whole war in Arnhem...." Arnhem, Netherlands became infamous in September 1944 when it was the site of a ferocious battle between the Germans and British paratroopers who were fighting for control of its bridge over the Rhine. The British were defeated, and Arnhem was destroyed. The battle and its campaign were later immortalized by Cornelius Ryan's 1974 book 'A Bridge Too Far" which was turned into the 1977 movie. Audrey was a teenager in Arnhem during the fighting and lived in a cellar with barely any food. You can still hear the trauma in her voice. She was offered a role in "A Bridge Too Far," but the memory was still too raw, and she turned it down. Liv Ullman took that part.

What is neurologically wrong with this woman? I'm not making fun of her but even though the content of what she says is normal, her speech cadence, her scattered pauses, her jerky head and hand movements make me think there is something wrong.
