The more I listen to the Quintet the more impressed I am. For one thing the bass has “matured” nicely…getting even more detailed and authoritative, and enriching the whole mix, making the iem less analidical sounding. But mainly I am liking the detail, and the imaging. And, for me it is just the opposite of your impression. The more complex and dense the track the more the Quintet shines. Take a track like Shannon from Timothy Crane’s The Life I Dream, which is very dense in spots, or Vivaldi’s Summer 1 from the Max Ricther’s recomposition…where all my other iems, including the Performer 8, begin to lose cohesion…where the instruments begin to blend and the mix gets just a tiny bit fuzzy…the Quintet maintains the individual placement and layering of the instruments. I do agree that there are tracks where the Quintet seems to be “trying too hard” on first listen…but even there I have come to appreciate the distinctness and precision of the separation between instruments…I miss it when I return to a more “organic” sounding iem like the Performer 8 (itself not the most organic of iems :) I am, by the way, running that same cable and find the the KB K7 tips do an excellent job. I am preparing a detailed track by track comparison of the Quintet and the P8…and I still do not know which one I like better for the music I listen too most. And that is saying a lot about a $219 iem!

Another great review, thanks! I debated between getting the Quintet and the Aful P8 - but opted for the P8 (based on your extensive review). Even though the Quintet looks like it's a great iem, I believe you helped me make the better choice.

Just got it. Treble is like 50% of the graphs at Squig. Meaning it's a downward slope from 3 kHz. Some graphs keep the energy high from 7 kHz and up. This graph cuts off at 7.5 kHz and the rest of the treble is -10 db or more. I haven't experimented with tips because it has a very long nozzle and all tips will create a good seal and clear sound. On many of my test tracks the treble energy is too low, meaning I can hardly hear those high frequency sounds (mainly percussion elements) with this IEM. For me, it's good but not great.

Wonderful analysis. Based on your prior review of the Phoenixcall, I have ordered it. I am a bit sad too, as I ordered a KZ PR2 only to find out some big drama on a filter and suppose it might be way too bright for me. Maybe I will not even open it.

For me this iem is the best until you get to aful performer 8. It’s definitely much more fun than the p8 though. Sounds excellent with rock and metal! Really great for gaming too. Cant wait to get my penon 10th back though lol, they finally received my return so hopefully that will get sorted out. For some reason it was sent all over mainland China and took over 3 weeks to get to them.

Yes I partially agree that the Quintet will be a little more fun, but it's also more fatiguing. To be fair they are tuned differently so it's inevitable one will be more chilled and the other more energetic.

I just grabbed a Performer 8. I now understand what it sounds like to step up to the next tier of IEMs. I do like to give them a bass boost via EQ to make them fit my preference for some content. I've been considering ordering a set of Xenns Mangird Tops to try out as well, before my return period is up on the P8. :) (For context, my main cans are Audeze LCD-X, and prior to the P8, after trying 12 different sub $300 IEMs, the Raptgo Hook X was my main, along with a little Blon BL03 for the laptop bag.)

Any chance that ivipQ would consider sending you any of their Conch series IEMs for review? I just noticed them recently while browsing AliExpress and they seem interesting. They have a 8BA set, a 4BA+2DD set, and a 2BA+2DD set. They also have a single DD, but I'm less interested in that one. Seems like they're recent additions to their lineup, since I can't find a review for any of them at the moment despite them currently being on a pretty decent sale.

@@akros9333 Very cool. I really hope they're undiscovered gems. I know the cables they sell are supposed to be good quality. While I don't necessarily put much weight behind cable rolling, I don't dislike the idea of high-end custom cables. It's like jewelry for your IEMs. You get the look you want and if it makes a difference in the sound quality then that's cool. It would be nice if their IEMs lived up to the quality of the cables they sell. It will also be interesting to see what of their cable lineup the IEMs come with by default. Based on the graphs in the listings, I'm currently most interested in the Conch V13, which is their 2DD+2BA. Seems like a 4-way frequency division rather than the usual dual-chamber BA design that most companies use to fill in the treble to avoid the peaky nature of a DD that can manage decent bass output. I'm still hoping to find a replacement for my GS Audio GD7B, since one of them got eaten by a dog... I miss the rich mids and subdued treble.

I am really looking forward to more of these balanced armature form factor micro-planar drivers. I am a huge sucker for a set where I can see inside the shell and admire how they managed to stuff so many different drivers in there. Like, some of these 10 and 12 BA driver sets are truly works of art with how the drivers look inside. I am curious how they sound, but I don't like treble enough to risk the Quintet, so I'll just have to wait for another set to come out with that particular driver. I think it would be interesting to see a BA and micro-planar set using Sonion 38 and 33 series drivers coupled with however many micro-planar drivers you need to match their SPL output.

Great review and comparisons. It looks like Kiwi Ears is trying to redeem them selves after the Quartet. Funny thing, the quartet is a set I can have a lot of fun with, but audiophile critical listening is not in its DNA. I can definitely see that the Quintet is what I would consider audiophile quality within its price point.

Its weird how much your graph of the Quintet differs from the one I take. It seems to be a trend now, looking on the 10 squig measurements there are differences of around 4db in pinna gain region, aswell as 10khz region (for example where your unit has dip in 10k, my has quite noticeable peak).
