I am in between pickups since my old Fishman under-saddle died after 23 short years (Out of warranty! ;o) I loved the sound with my system and Pre-amp and have been wanting to decide on the next best route. I have a K&K in my backup guitar and need to see how it responds and figure out the replacement on my primary gigging guitar. Your info us very helpful! Thanks!
Thanks for this video. I'm wondering how each one would sound after tweaking its eq to get the best tone. Maybe it wouldn't matter that much since they're all going into the AI instead of out the PA. That might be a good comparison too--mic your PA...it might be more "real life" like. Anyway, thanks again.
I have been looking into the Voiceprint... it uses Impulse Responses. There are other boxes cheaper out there like the TC Electronics Impulse IR (128 bucks) and the NUX Optima Air (179) I'm looking at. Plus, there's thousands of IR files you can download for these. I haven't decided yet!
It is usually not a good idea to completely turn up the volume on a preamp. I find my Pure works well w the K&K preamp just under half (11 o clock). My setup is bass at 10, mid at 10 and treble on 2 o clock. I let the PA or acoustic amp (Schertler) do the rest.
I agree the Fishman sounded best. (In my photo to the left, I am holding my Bourgeois Vintage D guitar.) Last year I bought an LR Baggs Voiceprint DI that works so great that I sold my Session DI. The Voiceprint DI goes for $429 new so can take a big bite out of your wallet. If you can beg, borrow or steal one, give it a try. They work as advertised. I have no idea how that could be since you start out by recording it through your cell phone mic then send the resulting voice print to your pedal. It seems like different cell phones would give different results but that is just conjecture and like many of my theories, subject to revision. I have a fairly unknown Kyocera brand cell phone because I beat my phones up and Kyocera advertises their phones as rugged, dust, drop/water-proof. The Voiceprint works great with my off-brand phone. At the opposite end of the spectrum, for such a small unit, the TC Electronics BODYREZ does a decent job of enhancing tone but since it has no volume control, it won't boost the signal.
Different sounds. I think the K and K sounds more like unplugged…except for a bit of “brassines” in the midrange which I EQ out. I used the Matrix for years in gigs and like it too..has a great sound with my Bourgeois. I’m still working with the K and K…I plan to glue the pickups next…I have them taped now…They came with tape. I want more volume from the K and K.
