KLAN WAR: Ulysses S. Grant and the Battle to Save Reconstruction 

Historical author Fergus Bordewich says history books have gotten it wrong about President Ulysses S. Grant and his pivotal role in dismantling the Ku Klux Klan in the South immediately after the Civil War. In an interview with HEC-TV's Victoria Babu, Bordewich shares how his research shows what was really going on in the South and what was at stake during Reconstruction right after the Civil War. Bordewich looks at Grant through the lens of civil rights and human rights, revealing a heroic figure, not a failure as many historians have depicted. Bordewich graphically details how the Ku Klux Klan came into power in the South right after the Civil War, creating anarchy and leaving newly freed slaves helpless and vulnerable along with white abolitionists. President Grant uses his federal powers to put an end to the KKK in the late 1860's.
