In this review of the Klark Teknik KT-2A I explore the differences and highlight the similarities between it and the classic it replicates, the Teletronix LA-2A. The KT-2A is one of the best built pieces of equipment one can purchase. It being the best LA-2A clone is unimportant. The cost is nominal compared to the quality of sound and build you will get. It works well with acoustic and electronic instruments. Although it has a bit of a learning curve for the novice, it is virtually the best compressor for achieving that classic console type sound heard on so many hit records.

I have one. I put in some lovely vintage Mazda (Brimar) & Matsushita & NEC Tubes and it sounds AMAZING. Like silk in the ears ❤❤❤

I have the KT2a with my WA73. I love how the combo sounds when the 2a is inserted in the middle of the 73's signal path. It also sounds great and extra creamy when it's not used as an insert. WA73 >KT2a>DAW yields some really creamy results!

That’s interesting, how do you route it to be in the middle of the 73?
@romelloverture
@romelloverture 3 года назад
@@OriShlez You come out of the 73's "insert send" and go into the kt2a's "input", then come out of the kt2a's "output" and go into the 73's "insert return". You may have to have the insert button pressed on the 73's front pannel aswell. I havn't done it in a while, but thats how you do it.

Hello. The pre-emphasis when is turned counterclockwise on KT2A shouldnt work like a high pass filter and make compressor to react more on the highs? In the product manual is written the opposite...🤔
@WarrenHenry
@WarrenHenry 2 года назад
That’s weird. The pre emphasis is supposed to be off or considered “flat” counter clockwise. I normally don’t use it. Thanks for watching and your comment ✌🏾🙏🏾

Hi sir! Quality video again, I tried liking it twice hah! Is this a good compressor for rap? Faster vocals
@WarrenHenry
@WarrenHenry 4 года назад
The key to getting the desired effect out of this compressor is to first know how much gain reduction you want on the source. Extremes on the peak reduction knob will likely have an undesirable effect. If you aim for being in the neighborhood of 1-3 dB of peak reduction on the meter, you can’t go wrong. The results, regardless of vocal tempo, should be the same. Again, the key is keeping an eye on the meter and knowing your desired gain reduction. Thanks for watching ✌🏾🙏🏾

I guess many of these clones are really good and may even compress similarly as the originals, BUT what they in most cases miss is the special typical SOUND the originals produced which is also what plugins in most cases can't deliver - since you really need the original tranformers and in the case of LA2A the original opto-converter to achieve this
@WarrenHenry

@@WarrenHenry The problem is that even the Universal Audio Remakes got enormously expensive in recent years here in Europe and often even can't be purchased at all anymore in Europe. A few years ago the UA Telectronix LA2A still was around 3'000 Euro. Now it's 5'800 Euros which really is completely nuts for a few resistors and valves is a metal box. Luckily the 1176LN still is halfway affordable and it seems to copy the original's character well. The original 1176s got completely unaffordsble. An original blackface in good shape is around $10'000, and the original LA2As even $15'000 and more. I btw purchased stere pairs of all 3 Klark Teknik clones, so two 76-KT (1176 clone), 2 EQP-KT (Pultec EQP-1A clone) and two KT-2As (still waiting for these - the order was made one year ago, still no delivery) since they were so ridiculously cheap. But I'm very tempted to still get an UA 1176LN since this really is the most versatile and legendary compressor with the original sound which can be used on everything.

@@WarrenHenry That is what I was thinking and really helpful reassurance, I couldn't help myself and picked up the KT-EQP. I think I might put it last in the chain other wise it would over compress the bump in frequencies. Am I thinking about that right? Thanks!

Hey Warren, really great non-comparison ;) I was actually about to purchase a LA 500. I own a Focusrite ISA One and would like to add some more warmth to my vocals when recording. The Klark Teknik KT-2A however is so cheap that I even could get two of them and use it on my mixing bus. What do you think?
@WarrenHenry
@WarrenHenry 4 года назад
Hey, thanks for watching. I would work well on vocals. But, using it on a 2-bus is hit or miss depending on the genre of music because of it's inability to adjust the attack and release times. ✌

IGS makes great products. I’m only familiar with their Vari-mu stereo compressor though. I’ve gotten out of the comparison wars since doing my video on Warm vs Heritage 😁. I say reach for the best tool that is within your budget. But know this for sure, with all of these clones, all they did is reverse engineer the original design and in the case of the KT2A augment the design with transformers on the input and output. ✌🏽

Larry what’s up brother. You would need to feed an outboard mic pre into the compressor feeding this output into your interface.

After using this compressor is it necessary to use another compressor in the DAW?

Thanks for your question. You can use a second for effect or if you think it is necessary. You would need to be sure that you use a little at each stage though.
