Hi Bill, I’m a hazardous materials specialist and I actually work with meters much like this one. Looks great. Something to keep in mind for anyone using this meter is that it is calibrated to Methane, so it works perfectly for natural gas. However, if you use this on a home that runs on propane then please understand that the numbers will be slightly off. For our at meters at work we would multiply the number on the screen by 1.3 and that would give us the correct propane reading (known as the “conversion factor”, this number differes between brands) So the take away is - expect the number to be higher in reality than what is displayed on the screen when used for propane. It’s true for any combustible gas detector. Great video Bill!

@@alexrevich5928the Meter would show the accurate number for natural gas, but would likely be off when reading propane. The meter is likely calibrated to methane. Since propane is a different chemical it causes a different reading.

I lucked out and bought one for $35 on eBay in great condition. I think the person bought it,used it to check for a possible leak and then resold it thinking it was unlikely to be used again.

This particular model claims to have a 5-7 year lifespan on the sensor. It is not user replaceable but factory serviceable.

How well do you think this works for car purposes? I'm looking into one of these to check for possible fuel leaks, and for air conditioning R134A leaks.

No, it is a Combustible Gas Detector, Methane, Propane, Butane down to 50ppm. I have used many different Freon sniffers, the fieldpiece SRL8 seems to take the most technician abuse. But most brands that are at least as capable as a cheap liquid bubbler from $350-$550

I’ve seen many devices ruined by leaving the batteries installed. Also don’t use a cheap watch battery for your watch, and/or change it often

Hi - I just purchased this product. I calibrated it outside, and when I walk inside the first bar lights up (on high sensitivity). I walk thru the entire house checking every nook and cranny, every gas powered item. Still just one bar. When I go back outside it goes back down to zero bars. Is this an indication that there’s a leak somewhere that I’m having trouble locating? Or is it common for one bar to be normal?

You might have a slight leak somewhere in the house. Do you have any old gas valves in the house? They are famous for leaking a little.

@@blakefredrickson6506 I doubt it. I would test around all of your gas valves in the house to start. Also around a gas heater if you have one. Test behind a gas range too if you have one.

@@blakefredrickson6506 BTW, yes, it absolutely could be methane coming up from a leaking pipe, toilet, etc. Also, there should be a vent pipe for your plumbing that might be leaking, blocked, catching wind, etc., that is blowing the sewage gasses (methane) back down in your house. These units are actually calibrated to detect methane, they just also detect natural gas. Another possibility might be naturally occurring methane or natural gas leeching up through the soil and somewhat concentrating in your house. There are home air exchanger units available to ventilate your house if you think it's necessary.

I found it seems to get set off by pipe dope. I have it set to high after installing a gas water heat or furnace. I'll go through my joint at a slow pace. I make a video of it and it usually takes me about a minute and a half. I've seen 1-2 bars but when I stay on joint I see no increase and I try to find leak and it seems to fluctuate between 1 and 2. It might need new batteries but just wondering if you have any thoughts.

Jesus effing Christ... can nobody tell you what the lights mean? Does 1 light on high sensitivity mean 'Get the family out of the house"? The directions that came with it and not 1 of the dozen or so videos on RU-vid tell you what it actually means!
