Paducah Home Theater / PHT TV - Ep. 16: Cornwall IV VS Forte IV
You thought the Forte VS Forte battle was intense? Check this out. Cornwall IV VS the brand new Forte IV. For some time, while technically part of the line, the Forte has always been something of its own beast. With this iteration, though, the Forte IV is stepping up its game and really moving more in line with the rest of the heritage products. Watch Trey and Jason as they go into a deep listening to see how these two awesome speakers stack up.
Let's go.
3..........2...........1
FIGHT!
-------------------
This one is on the longer side but we really wanted to dive in deep, as it was an awesome comparison. Quite possibly the hardest yet.
As mentioned before in the forte video, we don't like to show which speaker is which as it creates a bias. That said, after last weeks comments/responses, we took a pole to gather your thoughts and see what your preferred delivery would be. That said, the tally came in and with this comparison, we will not show you which speaker is which in the first half, but will reveal in the second half of the video. You may be surprised by what you thought was what, or you may be spot on, but hopefully this helps take the guesswork and the bias out of the equation. Enjoy!
Let us know what you think of this format in the comments below!

I have recently upgraded from Forte IVs to the Cornwall IVs with just 20hrs on the Cornwalls. Please forgive me for being blunt but the Cornwalls are way better than the Fortes. Not because of louder output or different kind of bass. The beauty of the Cornwalls is the magic mids and smoother highs. The accuracy of the tone and increased detail is amazing. The elusive quality of real musicality is only hinted at from the Fortes. Cornwalls are a true reference loudspeaker that can compete with $100k speakers. No joke I would put this up against the big TADs or JBL Everest. I am baffled on how they did it. Almost same drivers as Fortes just wider baffle and slightly different crossover. To say I am impressed is an understatement! So if you have the room don't hesitate to get Cornwalls. Bravo Klipsch!👏😊

Thanks for doing this . In a way its like comparing a 6' Steinway to a 9' Steinway. Each with similar tonal qualities but the large having that reach on the bottom and a larger lower mid to bass extension. Good to see these models continuing in the Klipsch lineup.

I recommend equalizing the volume for both speakers, so the only difference is the sonic quality of the speaker and not differences introduced by increased volume. However, it was clear to me that the Cornwalls had a fuller sound signature overall, despite the differences caused by higher volume. Great video comparison!
@treycannon2275
@treycannon2275 3 года назад
I agree...but we only had 1 amp...well nice amp...so it was what it was...However, the volume difference is also part of the tone difference...due to balance. So in your room, you would hear the volume difference...so fair...
@MuscleBN
@MuscleBN 3 года назад
That's true, but when the sonic chacteristics are very similar, after all they share identical midranges, human ear will generally lean towards the louder speaker!! The only True comparison is with efficiency equalization of the db level...
@TopShelfAudio
@TopShelfAudio 3 года назад
Agreed, if the idea of the comparison were to tell the difference in the sonic signature/quality. That said though, these tests are speaker vs speaker as is toe to toe. A real world compare with identical components throughout. If there are any variables altered outside of the speaker itself, it leads to an unfair real world comparison. All of that said, we aim to please and provide the most desired info. If there is a request for a video where we EQ first to specifically call out the character differences, we will add it to the to-do list. :)

Purchased a brand new set of Forte Fours site unseen from my local dealer. In my 18x24x8' acoustically treated dedicated space, driven by the WIllsenton R8 integrated amp in TRIODE MODE, the low end is really incredible. In my space, pulling them AWAY from the front wall 32", the 2 DB-A increase at 24Hz !!!, was very surprisning, and was beyond the Klipsch low frequency SPEC of 38Hz. ! (tested with a genuine sine wave tone generator). Please understand, that the Forte 4, is the ONLY heritage speaker sharing the same 12" driver as the new JUBILEE !!

Through my in ear monitors the cornwalls sounds more forward. The forte sounds more recessed. Basically the Cornwallis gives more midrange and the forte is laid back in the midrange allowing you to hear more bottom end. But hey that’s just my 2 pennies. Wish I was there to hear in person.

3/2024: Good Day From The Future I am considering buying the Forte IV, due to price only. The 15" speaker does make a difference with the Cornwall. I always believe that Bigger Is Better. I'm old school also. In 1974 a friend of mine had Altec VOT speakers in his basement and that got me hooked on Big & Horn Speakers. I do agree on the Tube issue: My Fender Super Reverb Amp with Tubes & 4x10" speakers kicks ass! Well done Guys. Thank You & Best Regards.

biggest difference is actually with the squawker horn on the cornwall. it's much more transparent and realistic in the upper midrange and treble. Forte are still cool but yeah Cornwalls are going to win. Either way please give me a call before you purchase elsewhere. 270-556-8427

Hey James, a redo of the FIV VS HIV sounds like it would be a popular option. We may just have to go back and do this one in the future. I would enjoy it myself. As for telling which is which, we did not add this initially in the FIV VS FIII video, as it creates a bias. When listening, the mind will tell you on a subconscious level that the unit you hear as "better," is the newer or higher priced unit...while this is not always the case. That said, there was a lot of demand for this so we took a pole. The most popular option was to include it in the second half and not in the first so you get some listening with and some without. Click through to about the halfway point and we put an indicator on screen for the rest of the video. :)

Thank you for doing this. Whatever you do you will satisfy some viewers and disappoint others. And the better you do the higher expectations people will have ... I bought my Forte 3 on the basis of what I read, to replace an Onkyo "hifi in a box" system. At first I used the Onkyo receiver and well - the system sounded good but was very fatiguing. I would listen for 45 mins and then watch tv. Then I saw a review of a cheap Chinese tube amp, the Reisong Boyuu A10. I bought it for $390 and suddenly my Forte's sounded sweet. The first night I listened for seven hours, the next hour nine hours, the third night I thought I was gonna lose my job ... Now I'm wondering about the Cornwalls ..

I anticipate those will be interesting and revealing. It's amazing how listening becomes something of an addiction. Once you find the right music on the right set of speakers in the right room, everything just falls into place and you can sink into your chair for hours at a time. I can't tell you what the best speaker is for you, but I am for sure blown away every time I hear the Cornwall. Head out to a showroom and hear them for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

I believe that originally the Forté was the replacement for the Heresy and the Chorus was the replacement for the Cornwall. This latest iteration of the Forte seems to be an amalgamation of the original Forte and Chorus.

i own LaScala's and have had Cornwall 3's and heresy 3's in my house and system and I'd say the Cornwall goes deeper but feels less impactful, as big and less detail then the LaScala's horn loaded driver. LaScala is faster and tighter as well. but if you need ultimate bass the Cornwall will go a little lower 15hz lower. Cornwall is smaller as well not as deep as the LaScala,. LaScala is a stove sized speaker.

I'm always surprised when people want Heresy vs Forte - imo its not even close if you're looking for a full range 2 channel situation. Its fun to compare, but...Heresy is a solution for a 3 way speaker in a small cabinet, I get people like the maybe somewhat smoother output over the frequency range (at least Heresy II vs Forte II, which is what I'm super familiar with), but cabinet volume and cabinet resonance and the fact that the forte can move so much more air and has a 15 inch radiator, I don't think its even really a fair a comparison. I should qualify these comments by disclosing I've owed Forte II for 30 years, in college days, my roommates and I would loan equipment and spend the entire weekend doing A - B comparisons, one of my roommates loved the Heresy, I bought Forte II, and they smoked them every single time, and his Heresy made awesome surround speakers.
@TopShelfAudio
@TopShelfAudio 2 года назад
Thanks for watching and for your input! While I agree to an extent, and while there are tiers in the line for a reason and the Forte is above the Heresy, the Heresy has come a long way in it's design over the years. I think the idea is that; they were originally designed to play a supporting role whereas, when Klipsch realized people were buying as mains, they altered the design to fit the bill. This rings true especially in the latest gen. If you haven't heard the IVs, I very much recommend checking them out. I was very impressed with the new line. -Jason

If you can place the speakers 2 or more feet away from the wall and out into the room, the Forte IV. If you must place them only 1 foot away, Cornwall! My room requires near-wall placement and I like my music low to medium loud, so Cornwall IV for me.
@TopShelfAudio
@TopShelfAudio 3 года назад
This is Cory... personally I'd pick the Cornwalls myself but the Forte shouldn't need that much space, Roy has publicly stated that they need at least 8" from the back of the speakers and that's about it. More than 3' isn't something I'd recommend as general advice. If you get too far out in the room you can potentially run into SBIR issues where the upper bass frequencies have somewhat of a suckout due to bouncing off the wall behind the speakers then partially cancelling out what's coming off the front and resulting in a notch in the response.

Having the CW, it does a lot of things great and maybe better than the Forte, however, I discovered a critical fail with the CW's in that the big floppy 15" cannot keep up with high speed on the drums (some metal songs it cannot keep up with). This is not a huge matter for me since I don't listen to that genre often, but it was disappointing to find the CWs struggling with it. I'm wondering if the Forte has tighter bass and do a better job in this regard. Not planning on replacing my CWs, but had I heard this before I purchased, may have explored other options. Never heard the Forte in person.

@traviswilliamsonesq.460
@traviswilliamsonesq.460 3 года назад
Who said they were not Heritage? Oh, Trey. Well Marketing came up with the Heritage Line (Matt Sommers) and they include the Forte in there, so I think they are just talking sound signatures.
@TopShelfAudio
@TopShelfAudio 3 года назад
This was not to diminish the value of the IIIs or before in any way. They are awesome speakers and an awesome line throughout. Regardless of what line they are in, this doesn't change that in any way. The concept/argument of if they should or shouldn't be in the heritage line is basically an idea of how much of a hand PWK had in the making of the product. The rest of the heritage line, PWK was directly involved and the lead designer whereas the Forte was headed by a different engineer. PWK did still sign off on it and have direct input though so, both sides could be argued. The fact of the matter is that Klipsch designates them as a heritage product so, that is what they are. End of story. With the new IVs though, the sonic signature more closely resembles that of the other products in the line where this wasn't as much the case in previous generations.

These videos are designed to primarily focus on the commentary as, it's impossible for all of the differences and subtleties to come across over the recording. As such, we don't show which speaker is playin through some of the video as to avoid bias while listening. That said, we introduce the on screen label about half way through. That, but more specifically the Sennheiser ME 2 Omni-Directional Lavalier Microphone with a ew 100 ENG G4 wireless kit. I say this to further what Trey said, great for its intended purposes of picking up our voices, but not at all designed to give accurate reproduction of the speakers themselves. There are too many variables including some out of our control. For instance, most viewers are probably watching on a phone. These videos are primarily for entertainment/for us to provide more details through our words. There is no internet video that can compare to hearing these in person and if you are considering purchasing either, please make the compare for yourself in person before going forward. We can tell you how they sound in 1000 words, but nothing compares to hearing them yourself. :)
@johnshepherd708
@johnshepherd708 3 года назад
I understand the argument about not taking the audio for other than entertainment etc. There are many examples on RU-vid where there has been an effort to record appropriately with a sense of high fidelity. It takes an effort with quality microphones and digital recorder and you need to emphasize the use of headphones for replay to benefit the listener. You can tell a difference even on this format. I think that it is beneficial to the viewer/customer. You are attempting to show a comparison and sell a premium priced product to a not so general customer base. Pick up a pair of Neumann KM 184 mics and a quality digital recorder from the likes of Zoom and do it right. You have a background in pro video production and it should be obvious. I am a fan of your dealership and I just believe that you are doing yourselves a disservice in putting out an audio representation that is not representative of what the products sound like. If you stand by the inferior format, etc, then do a static review.
@TopShelfAudio
@TopShelfAudio 3 года назад
@@johnshepherd708 ugh. Man this is Cory. A couple things here. First of all, I do not recommend auditioning speakers in this manner, I don't care what microphone you have. Best case scenario you strip it all down to basic frequency response and what the room sounds like, which, does a disservice to everybody. This thing has snowballed into this situation. We started off just trying to solely focus on the commentary. Then people wanted to know what music we were listening to. Then people wanted to listen along. Except there's significant licensing issues so we had to make deals with local artists. Then we had to label what speakers were playing. Now we're supposed to pick up some Neumann microphones. Just keeps snowballing in the name of trying to make people happy. Where this is headed was never the original intent and to be honest I'm about ready to stop making these listening comparison videos. The biggest advantages of the latest generation of Heritage speakers such as lower fatigue, better imaging, seamlessly blending of the drivers, micro-details in the midrange... it's all things that that gets totally lost when you try to record it then play it back on RU-vid, not to mention that every single device is going to sound different. I don't see the point in analyzing it at this level to be honest.
@johnshepherd708
@johnshepherd708 3 года назад
@@TopShelfAudio I agree with much of what you have said, however, I have heard a number of RU-vid applications where there has been a concise effort with quality recording to show differences. It is not common but it's out there. This can be done with relatively good playback with headphones. To expect any kind of decent playback with a portable device or computer with internal loudspeakers is totally out of the question. The licensing situation is another issue. It seems that others work around this. What you are attempting to do here is provide information for people to make a decision and a sale for your organization. I get it and commend your efforts to bring interesting information to the public. It comes down to a cost-benefit to you and whether you want to take it on. Is it better to listen in person? Yes. Will you be able to get a demo in person that reflects an ideal situation? That depends on a host of variables. I would say, from my experience, it is difficult to get a proper demonstration in most markets. I certainly did not want to in any manner, open a can of worms here. I have been a long term K-Horn and Forte owner and I am a fan of what Paul Klipsh stood for. I was, for a number of years a high end audio dealer and understand the issues here and appreciate your dedication to the market. Thought it would be the other way around 🤷‍♂️ (I'm looking for a new front left, center and front right, last one in the pair will be a center rear. I love big speakers, full sound, and think left, center and right should be the same speaker. The setup will be fullrange in large speaker with subs on top, so what I really want is the best punchbass/ midbass, the subs have no problem shaking the room with an ironfist of controll 🤪).
