I really enjoyed this review. Too many times, there is little content online trying to review more objectively older generations of Klipsch and people end up talking about a Heresy I as if it was performing the same as a III or IV. Keep them coming :)

Tube amp makes a huge difference. I have owned a pair of Large Advents for over around 45 years, so I'm really used to that sound with an old Marantz solid state amp. About a year ago I purchased a set of brand new Heresy IVs. When I brought a new McIntosh 252 into the fold it really sweetened the sound of the Heresys. The sound blooms from those speakers with that amp whereas with the Marantz the sound could get harsh at medium to high volumes. I love both speakers for their similarities and their differences and plan on keeping them forever. I'll be 70 this year, so that's it for purchasing speakers. I am adding a subwoofer to experiment with. I feel that may fill out the sound a bit. It'll be here on Friday! 🙂

Good review and soundstage stage testing on these 2 well known speakers. I have owned a pair of New Large Advents now for 7 years and love them. I was given these speakers from a passing neighbor whose daughter came knocking on my door with the sad news of her father's passing. He left these speakers and all his big band CDs to me. Upon receiving these speakers and setting them up I noticed right off how nice and warm they sounded. I still use these today as my main speakers and my Elac debut 6.2 as my "B" set.

The new large Advents are pleasant to listen to but every so often I change my soundstage and connected my Polk audio TSI 100 as they sound so much nicer than the Elacs. I hear detals more in the music then from both the Advents and Elacs. These Polk's speakers are 6+ years ago but have good reviews I seen. I'm impressed. Hey, I like your channel! I had some Heresy I's for awhile. Here's my take: with a tube amp, listening to a wailing sax like on Pink Floyd Money, LOUD, they will give you goosebumps. Horn speakers naturally excel at reproducing sax and other horn instruments.. Imaging and muddiness can be improved by getting rid of the giant oil-can crossover caps and replacing them with modern electrolytic caps. They are very, very directional. You must point them correctly and listen in that spot. Amazing and worth owning but I let them go as I'm trying for quality with less volume and a bigger sweet spot for listening.

A tube amp setup is definitely going to be done. I'm thinking perhaps a session with several efficient speakers, like the Frazier Concerto, would be fun.

Have had both. The Klipsch with a sub is a concert hall, pretty easy to drive and can play loud. The Advents always put a smile on my face, great boxes of sound. Lived to have a stacked set, that requires a serious under 4 ohm stable amp. So many classic speakers to experience. I have some ESS now. While you are in the neighborhood myswell review the A25. That and the Advents were some of the best bang for your buck. Some of the vintage KLH's fly under the radar. I found AR's don't age that well and need gobs of power, but when working properly are very classy. I made some Frankenstein speakers with all the parts I have salvaged. Once in a while it turns out well with some decent synergy.

I love my Heresys and agree with your assessment. Altough Heresys are powered by a recapped Heathkit AA30 El84 stereo amp and not solid state. My preamp is a tube based DIY Tubes4hifif SP8. My music of choice is jazz, which sounds fantastic on Heresys and tubes. My speakers were recently recapped and are raised up about 24-inches on stands but, due to the bass not being what it should, are augmented with a stereo pair of SVS SB 1000 subs. So I guess that makes my system bi-amped. And like you, I think there are other speakers that image better. However, if you want something to play small group music on such as jazz and get the feeling you are sitting in some small juke joint then I cannot recommend much anything else that could sound better. Heresys on tubes are just plain fun.

I can't recall on which position you have your crossover switch set to; Deceased, Normal or Increased. I'm usually set to increased, but looking at the schematic for that speaker the increased position removes all resistors and even the inductor for the woofer, leaving only the .3uF cap in front of the fried egg tweeter. It's amazing!

Well, since I have the bull nose new large advents, you got my attention with this video. I'd really like to know how they compare to newer speakers, but if you're all vintage, I probably won't find that out here. It's not ideal, but I've tamed the potentially fatiguing highs of the fried egg tweeters with an onkyo a/v amp. I just switched them out for the Laureates to see the difference. They sound pretty good, but I may have to swap them again. Not surprisingly, I get a little more out of the speakers with the bigger woofer - and the Laureates may be a little too warm and hemogeneous with the onkyo... Anyway, I'll check out your other videos when I get a chance. Thanks for the comparison.

Enjoying your approach with these comparisons. Speakers are very dependent on positioning so you won't get their best representation by listening to each in the same place. It would be better to spend at least a little time with placement to capture a large portion of what each can do. I wouldn't take it to the nth degree, but much can be gained with 10-15 minutes of positioning.
@stereoniche
@stereoniche 4 месяца назад
Indeed. I do move them around a bit, turn them on their sides, etc., if possible, when testing various speakers. Although, for the Heresy set, I did not place them low to the floor angled upwards. That was a miss, but I think I gave them the most real world setup that the vast majority would typically do in their own homes.

Sure. Probably a bit of "heresy" but for amplification, I am actually using the amp shown in the walkthrough of my showroom, an Emotive XPA2 Gen I which is 250 watts/ch @ 8 ohms and 500w at 4 ohms. I had it and because it is stable at 4 ohms, I decided to use it for testing speakers so I don't have to worry about swapping in something else and it has more than sufficient headroom so any speakers will not be limited. It would be nice if you'd at least play each one for the audience. I thought I was going to get to hear them when I clicked on the video.
