Kloof Corner Pinnacle with @DomTomato | Table Mountain's Toughest Hikes

Last year, I set myself the goal of taking on Table Mountain's most extreme routes. When ‪@DomTomato‬ got in touch to organise a hike up the mountain, I knew it would be the perfect chance to take on the mountain's most iconic scramble route - Kloof Corner Pinnacle!
Kloof Corner Pinnacle is to Kloof Corner Ridge what Ferny Dell is to Hiddingh-Ascension. Both KKP and KKR begin and end in the same way, following a short chain and a scramble up from the Kloof Corner sunset spot, but rather than following the more tedious grassy slope up to the second chain, KKP heads straight up the rocky cliff-face of the ridge line. Of all the Table Mountain routes I've done, none has such a high ratio of climbing to hiking, and a very high proportion of the route is spent clinging to the rock-face. The route reconnects with KKR shortly before the second chain, and exits to India-Venster via the infamous 11-inch crack.
With Dom, Jordan, Tristan and Campbell all being capable scramblers and very comfortable heights, we took every chance we could to add some extra spice to an already formidable route. This route should only be attempted by experienced climbers, and don't try the variations we took!
Enjoyment Rating: 5/5
Difficulty Rating: 8/10
Challenges: in terms of distance, the most direct route to the cable-car, and as a result, also the steepest. Most of the route is spent climbing short rock pitches, often with very big drops below, and so confidence with heights is essential. The chains in particular require a good level of upper body strength. If you do manage though, quite possibly the most enjoyable and rewarding climb on the mountain!

These chaps are very athletic and have climbing skills. Unnecessary for ordinary folk to take these risks on this route especially where the 3rd chain is at the 11 inch crack. The trick is to stay inside the crack until the very last part, exit for a second or two( very exposed) and then you are up

Google has got to be a liar. India Venster cannot be the toughest hike on Table Mountain. This definitely is!

Those lists are made by people who have hiked like 5 routes and think they've seen the mountain 😂. This one was up there, but just wait for some of the ones later on this list!

I agree. Indian Venster is a walk in the park compared to these ones. This is scrambling, free solo, parkour skills rolled into one dangerous hike.

Nice! You mentioned the 5 most difficult routes on Table Mountain. What are the other 4?

The first on the list was Ferny Dell, Kloof Corner Pinnacle was second, for the rest, look out for the next video! 😉 So my plan changed slightly after doing this, as Venster Buttress and Wood-Springs Traverse were the final two routes on my list, but it sounds like those can't really be done without a rope. I've instead expanded the list to include every tough C-grade, and possibly a D-grade or two, so routes like Silverstream Ravine, Saddle Face, Spring Gulley, the Venster Ravine into Kasteels Gulley variation etc. So stay tuned! 😁 Plan is to do them all, and then try to comment on which one truly takes the crown

@@daniel_johnson_pmbpk That's awesome. A friend and I have recently completed all 101 TM routes up to C+. Well I still need to do 5 more. There are some really trick and obscure ones out there. It would be interesting to see which ones you choose in the end.

@@ByfootZaCpt epic! Sorry for missing this comment initially. Have you done Springs? Above the saddle between Devils Peak and Table Mountain? It's a C+ that we're keen to take on, just haven't seen much about it and how feasible it is without ropes

@@daniel_johnson_pmbpk no worries. Yes I have. it is a very spicy c+. I would definitely take a rope and gear if you don't know the beta.

@@ByfootZaCpt thank you, good to know! Quite a bit spicier than e.g. the top of Silverstream Ravine or Window Gorge, for example?

Always! I like to take on physical challenges, and especially ones which are also mental, and might invoke a fear response, but I have no particular interest in seeking out danger - fear and danger have a complicated relationship, and definitely don't always align. I know my limits, and always judge things according to those :)
