I can't agree with you more on this video! When I was going for my first ADV bike I was stuck between the new KLR and the Himalayan. I was lucky enough to be able to rent both bikes on separate weekends and go try them out in the woods with some motocamping. Being a first time rider in the ADV bike category I felt so much more confidence in the Himalayan whenever it came to riding off road. I think for me it came all down to three things. Seat height, forgiving engine/braking and weight distribution. The Himalayan is such a forgiving bike. That plus the ease of doing self maintenance on everything on the bike is what convinced me to get the Himalayan. 4,000 miles and counting!

I also went with Himalayan and just hit 4600 miles. Agree on all your points! Actually i got rid of Triumph, Honda, and Harley to make this my only bike. Great for getting to work and weekend adventures and got a toy hauler to take it with me on camping excursions. Not being top heavy makes it so easy to ride cause i have 32" inseam. All i did is cigar lighter and USB, doubletake mirrors, new rear tire Dunlop, LED headlamp, Tusk handguards, auxillary LED lights, and got RotoPak fuel cans but never needed those yet. I bought it with the hard aluminum cases which are great for security. Very happy with my choice and love ease of maintenance!😁

Can’t believe I found you doing this test, you’re the one that influenced me to get my Himalayan. Turned out it was a little too small for me, I’m 6’3” 235 lbs and I was a little cramped, so sold it and looking for something a little bigger. Thanks for the great videos!

The tires are the first thing I changed because I experienced the shimmy shimmy shake shake but the tires are fine if you are going to street the bike but not for off-road use. I tend to ride my Himalayan more than my KLR and I might sell her next season... yes, you heard me correctly I might be selling one of my horses out of the coral.

I rode a KLR for ten + yrs.and loved it, great bike and never let me down. If it weren't for the seat height and being top heavy I'd probably still be riding it. As I got a little bit older ( shorter ) I realized I needed a shorter seat height I started looking at other bikes and found the Himilayan. I love this bike

G'day Ronin from Australia, a well rounded update, earlier l said the my Son had bought the 2022 KLR for a 6000 mile road/trail ride with mates, the bike ran fantastically and mechanically faultless, he indicated that the only fault was riding this bike in stop/ start traffic, and this became more apparent when he used it for a weekly travel to work in the City of Melbourne, he's gone backwards to a road bike, warming up here today, 27C, 82F, cheers mate, Neil 🤠. PS Your voice comes through very clear with the funny sounding accent or it's it my accent that sounds funny, LOL Brother.

Your audio sounds good. A nice balance between voice and moto sounds. I've always enjoyed riding a KLR. But at age 67 when I bought my Himalayan, I didn't feel as comfortable with the height of the KLR and the top heavy feel. The Himalayan felt lighter, more planted to the road, and I just like the visual appearance of the Himalayan. If I was a younger, more aggressive rider the KLR might be the right choice. It definitely needs more throttle to get to the sweet spot of torque and power. The Himalayan is just easier and more forgiving of a slow and boring rider like me. You've made lots of good observations on the KLR. The skating does improve with more aggressive tires. But as you say, even with better tires the high up weight makes the bike feel a little skiddish on gravel. Great video!

KLR and Himi are both great bikes, and I struggle with a "fail" title. We are back to the same discussion points as always. What is the mission for the bike, and what bike fits you physically? Beyond that, I would suggest what you experienced is all about the tires, and the general difference in weight between a 440 pound bike and a 480 pound bike. Those two engines are significantly different and require different approaches. The lugging test is not necessarily an accurate way to look at how to use the KLR. Shorter riders will struggle with the ergonomics of the KLR. The new S version will help a bit. Adventure bikes are by nature a compromise, and there bikes are a great example. With proper tires, I think either bike works fine in an adventure ride, but I love the lighter weight of the Himi. When it comes to longer distances on pavement, the KLR has a distinct advantage. Himi simply does not have enough power to go that distance. I really do not see either bike as a "fail", just different tools for different missions. Best wishes Ronin!
@OlManRonin
@OlManRonin Год назад
The " Fail" was question marked but I guess people will always read into things more than the actual text. Like I said in the video I wish I had more time on the bike to give it a fair test. Thanks for watching Cheers

My 23 Adventure was ready fir all kinds of dirt road passes in CO, right out of the box. With a few mods, she is now an almost indestructable beast, ready fir the hardest road, and some pretty hard singletrack. Not a KLX300/250, but a surefooted, steady mountain mule that rips asphalt canyons and can roll at 80 to Sturgis, in pretty good comfort.

Just bought a '22 klr650 traveler and immediately experienced the skating on gravel. It has real knobby tires w/ good tread. Quite eye opening for me, and not a deal breaker, but I feel logging in some time and getting to know the bike will help too. I will be shopping for optimum tires to handle gravel better though.

My friend just bought a new KLR. He says the new ones have some teething problems like faulty fuel pumps. The panniers and aux lights are a nice touch. I'm pretty sure my trusty DR650 has more HP and torque, and also handles better off road. I've run it through deep gravel farm roads in Kansas with ease, then ran it 85 mph home on the freeway. You should try one. ;)

I use to have a 2001 KLR 650. Was a fun bike to ride and was pretty versatile overall. I still mainly rode pavement but did some fire roads as well. It was top heavy with that huge tank but really was never a problem but that said it was nice not to have to hit the gas stations all the time. I did have a larger motard style front brake rotor with stainless brake lines on the front as well which really made the braking power so much better. I also had a Jardine pipe on it, carb jetted and drilled slide on it which really gave me lots more snap on the low end as you could just roll the throttle hard in 1st gear and the front end would come right up which it never did when it was stock exhaust and stock jetting. Overall great reliable bike.

Improvements include Vstream windscreen , windscreen riser that's adjustable, 3/4 inch handlebar riser, grip puppys, Leo Vince exhaust with quiet insert, TPMS I found on Amazon and after the original tires need to go I replaced with Dunlop Trailmax missions. I ride a 2017 KLR650 and I totally agree with you about the gravel road handling. Different tires seam to make no change in my experience. In my opinion the top heaviness is the main culprit. Even worse in mud or wet grass. This is my view after 30,000 miles on a KLR.

40 cu in, 40 ft/lbs, and 40 HP. Decent for a single pot engine. I prefer that type of power and power delivery to a more souped up “ADV” that can’t decide if it’s a race bike or a dirt bike juggernaut.

I have a gen 2. I only put 4 gallons of gas in for my sunday 150 mile ride. That removes 12 lbs of top end weight. Lowering links drop center of gravity 2 inches. The result is a klr that is more like a standard. If you are tall, you end up with a bike that fits you, and it does not feel much different than a classic triumph. Oh, did I mention it is waay smoother?

i droped my 2024 Adventure ABS the minute I touched mud and bent handle bar with Barkbusters. I bought the Dunlop Trailmission and a set of Tusk Adventure tires and I think I will install the Tusks first. After 3 months with my KLR, I think I made the wrong choice of bike... too top heavy and too many things to replace (footpeg, crash bars, skid plate, shift lever, etc...), i should probably have gotten a KTM 350 EXC-F. In it's current condition with original tires, I don't trust my KLR until I change the OEM tires. I do mostly gravel roads and the occasional trail, but that bike is too heavy and ackward to go in trails.

Audio is fine Jeff. Nice bike but not for me I think. Just to big and heavy for the sort of trails I do on my Himmy. I’ve had Honda XL1000 Varadero’s, carbed when they first came out and later EFI and the ubiquitous GS; give me the Himmy every time; I get much more pleasure riding my Himmy than the bigger bikes. Mind you, I had a Honda SLR 650, a very underrated little bike, first gear was a bit too high for rock strewn steep off road gradients, but I still loved that bike. I understand your comments about the KLR when on gravel. Brilliantly presented Jeff; luved the way you tactfully comment on the less than perfect area’s of the KLR. However, if the the top heaviness and shimmy shakes aren’t an issue for you then that KLR will make one cracking motorcycle. Cheers Neil

I’m saying that KLR will go places the Himalayan and Scram couldn’t hope to, even though they are both capable bikes. Plus, KLR parts are more available worldwide than scram and RE parts. If you stand up (the only and best way to ride dirt, rock, and gravel) all that apparent...repeat, apparent...floppin around would quit. I’ve had mine on hard roads and singletrack in Colorado, and I’m here to tell ya - this is one surefooted beast.

I apologize for not watching the video through it's entirety, but judging from the title, you concluded that the KLR is not stable on gravel. I somewhat disagree with that assessment. I bought a new 2022 non-ABS model and have modified it steadily since buying it in June. I grew up riding dirt bikes in the Idaho mountains and had high hopes for the 2022 KLR 650 in regards to letting me explore the mountains like I was 13 again. At 53 years old and out of shape, I did not anticipate the amount of muscle memory and strength that would be needed to successfully handle a 460-lb bike in the woods. My first forays onto area gravel roads in stock configuration were hair-raising. I experienced the same shimmy and erratic handling that you did. However, I noticed that after about a half an hour or so of simply riding the bike, it became much less scary. I adapted to the handling characteristics and was able to increase my speed as my confidence increased. I started out being terrified at 20 mph, but in the next hour, was fine going 35 mph. I have since added Shinko 244 tires at a lower PSI and have no issue running 35+ mph on gravel. But every time I hit gravel, I have to allow some time to adjust my steering and throttle inputs in order to maintain control and confidence. Pretty sure your experience with the KLR and gravel is the same. You just need to be patient and allow your body to adjust to the inputs.

Thanks for using metric measurements occasionally. As a viewer from overseas I find the use of Imperial/ US units for tank capacities and fuel economy so confusing, even though I grew up using Imperial units until we changed to metric 60 years ago. Imagine the confusion for viewers who have never had to think about gallons/ miles/ inches in their life! So can you please list that you are using US measures ( even though it should be self -evident from your accent that you are filming in the US)

I have similar issues when watching European reviewers. Most don’t show US imperial units. Some do and I appreciate the extra effort. Perhaps some don’t realize how many American viewers they have or simply don’t find the importance in it. I am constantly looking up the conversions. Perhaps eventually I will learn how from memory but I’ve only used standard for 47 years now so it’s pretty well ingrained. Lol. ✌️

Since discovering your channel a few months ago I've enjoyed your videos and appreciated your perspectives and opinions. My motives are sincere when I suggest that you quit the silly sound effects. They're distracting, annoying, and a louder volume than your speech. Witticisms never get old, but kid show sounds immediately do. Keep up the otherwise great content and the best of luck with your growing channel.

The stock tires on the KLR are garbage for anything but asphalt.

@@OlManRonin Yes. I owned the same bike for a while and found it a bit squirly on gravel at slower speeds. I found it way better on gravel at higher speeds once you get used to the bike moving under me. Great bike. Love your videos but I also owned a Himalayan and found the KLR way better on gravel. Everyone has different ideas so all good. Cheers mate

@@gilcomnz like I said in the video it isn't my bike. So my testing is done all on the same or similar roads and at same or similar speeds. With the stock tires and the way too top heavy feel with increasing skating at over 40 mph, there was zero way I was going to chance it. HENCE, my statement " I wish I had the bike longer" lol cheers to you as well

Have to take into account how R.E. do their resesrch in the Himalayans. The decades of riding tours on RE bikes.

I'm still in a tough spot between a KLR650 and a RE: Himalayan; I guess I'm concerned with RE's build quality and quality in general. I see the comments, I'm 6'5'' 220 pounds, and for whatever reason, the RE's just don't feel right.
