The KLR was a bike I had to get use to . My first words about the KLR was it was a big heavy pig . Mine was is a Very Very Heavy PIG ! LOL ! NT8 made her that way . I have not had a chance to ride a DR yet so I could not compare . The Goat dose everything I want to do and very well . I can pack it down and ride the tar mack and then take it all off and get dirty . Coming from only street bike riding I love it . The Goat has a lot done to it to get it where it is today though . It is far from stock . Thank You for sharing . Will be waiting for the second part .

The KLR may have power down low in rev range, but I've got the FCR Pumper carb on my DR and it can chug at low RPMs pretty darned good! From what I've read the carb change does add a lot of power to the low end.

I have a 1987 dr600 and love it in about a year I will be picking up a dr650 brand new from the dealer plan on doing some off road adventure riding I'm a huge kawi fan but the reason I go dr is really just cosmetic the klr doesn't look enough like a dirtbike to me which is what these are

I'm 6'3" and owned a KLR about 10 years ago. I couldn't stand how high I sat on that and it just didn't feel that fun to ride. The DR looks like it would fit me better. I also like the simplicity of it and the lighter weight over the KLR. I'm seriously thinking of getting one.

New KLR - 210kg. DR650 - 162kg the main reason why I got one!

When I was at the shop waiting to get my tires mounted on my DR I was checking out the 2015 KLR & the main thing I noticed was how BIG it was. It seemed like it was the same size as the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 but one thing I thought was kinda cool about the new KLR is how it comes with a stock skid plate & rear rack also the frame,swing arm & motor is all black
@OklahomaADV

I just purchased a new 2024 dr my reasoning after watching several comparison videos was the maintenance aspects, valve adjustment looks to be easier on dr with just screw adjustments vrs shimming on the dlr.

That's a damn good bike you got yourself. I definitely agree with you about the lack of wind protection on the DR. Mine came with this massive windshield mounted on the number plate thing, and it caused all kinds of havoc in my helmet. You might get more air overall, but a smooth stream of air counts for a lot. Also, a lot of windshields mounted up front will flex at highway speeds, causing the stream of air to constantly shift and buffet. I went from sport bikes to the DR as my introduction to dual sporting. I still find myself wishing I had gone KLR when I'm on longer road trips, but for a bike you can beat to hell and back, the DR is hard to top.

Nice review. I've got an adjustable windscreen on my DR, Happy trails panniers, a skid plate, center stand, Clark tank, inline clear fuel filter, aftermarket carb vent, pipe, low seat. I have a few more farkles that need to be installed and I really need to break down (no pun intended) and do the neutral safety switch/safety wire mod. The DR is probably the funnest bike I've ever owned.

Had a 2006 DR650 and have a 2013 KLR650 now. DR is much better offroad due to lighter weight and slimmer body style. KLR is much better on Highway due to its watercooled engine,fairing,and slightly higher gear ratio. If you ride more than 50% Off-road > get the DR. IF,you mostly ride on road or traveling > you should ride the KLR. I've been racing and riding motorcycles since 1967 so I'm not just making this up. Sold my DR to a friend from school who lives in Sabine National Forest,Texas. The DR is perfect in that area with the forest service roads. I ride highways 99% of the time and the KLR now is much smoother since I went to a 16T countershaft sprocket and traded Kendra K270's to Kendra K761's. Have a Nice Ride!

From what I have seen so far from months of research, the DR650 is more modular and you can change a lot to fit. I still can't decide between it and the new Honda CB500x and XR650

Both great DS bikes. Simple summary....The KLR regularly wins the competition because it still offers the very best compromise of on vs off road. While the artist formerly known as "OklahomaKLR" may not care about wind protection, for those of us who put on long miles, it is essential. Getting beat in the chest with a 70mph wind for a couple hours is not pleasant. But agree that the lighter weight and simplicity of the DR are virtues. But again, the KLR wins the best overall title....time after time. www.motorcycle-usa.com/164/1442/Motorcycle-Article/2008-Kawasaki-KLR650-Comparison.aspx P.S. Just like Prince.....You will eventually drop the "formerly known as" and return to the KLR. No question. You will grow weary of the DR and buy another KLR. Only a matter of time.
@OklahomaADV
@OklahomaADV 10 лет назад
The only time i like wind protection is when its cold. And that is because the cold air on my neck isn't nice. And i do agree that the klr does win most of the comparasons. When you say you want to put in long hours at 70 mph then yes the klr may be better for you. And i don't plan on getting another klr. When i add another bike to the stable it will probably be an older concourse (for those couple hours at 70mph)

This comparison seems incredibly fair :-) I can't wait to see how the new seat is after a longer ride on my KLR. Also, I guess I'm that guy (when it comes to windscreens). But then I ride like 90% highway. Even considering getting a regular street helmet and keeping the one with a peak for my weekend outings. Either way, great video man.

Hello my fellow Okie! I'm from the Cherokee County area, and I have had very Great results on my DR in my area both on and off road. Only things I have done is Protaper's and new mirrors. My question is, do I need to change out my stock Handguards to install "Bark Busters" on the 2012 DR? I like the way you have yours set up. I wish they would have installed a Tac on our bikes.. Great Vlog!

The main advantage the KLR650 has as far as convenience goes is that unlike the DR, you actually have a fuel gauge, tachometer, basically a dashboard that won't leave you stranded without gas... I will say that's the only thing I can think of. To be honest I do prefer the DR's appearance over the KLR. The DR has more of a dirt bike look, while the KLR just looks like a triceratops dinosaur to me, just sayin... Also the DR, makes a way better looking super moto.

Don't think this review is valid anymore. The new KLR comes with a better seat, an upgraded suspension, a bigger tank, and more wind protection. It's a much better road bike. The DR is still a better offroad bike.
@noyopacific
@noyopacific 7 лет назад
I'd say that the comparison is still valid because both bikes last forever and resales of older models are far more common than new purchases. That said, I'd probably lean toward a KLR because I already have a better bike than either of these for tight, off highway riding so if I were going to get another bike my bias would be toward highway comfort. Nice video Okalahoma ADV. You did a good job here!
@twowheelsdown2002

I agree, having owned both, the DR is better. The DR is better on the dirt, and on the street. Yeah, everyone says the KLR is better on the street. Bullshit. Only if you like a windscreen. The DR runs smoother at 80mph than the KLR. It also does not get blown around by trucks like the KLR, because it does not have those shrouds and windscreens that catch the air. The DR is WAAAYY lighter than the KLR and can be played around on more. The DR just needs a bigger tank, and new seat, then it will spank the KLR on pavement, and is way better on the dirt too. Oh, and the valves are so simple to do on the DR, instead of the bucket/shim KLR valves. Oil changes are also a piece of cake. I had the DR, then a KLR. Now I sold the KLR and will get another Dr and put a tank and seat on it. DR wins, hands down.

I owned both too and I could never get over having a seemingly meaningless fairing on a dirt bike. I actually enjoyed the KLR overall but it felt soooo top heavy! I can't believe how light the DR650 feels. It seems similar to the drz I just sold but with alot more power! I really think its a great all purpose bike. Ive had 18 bikes so far.

Great video, you said it best... both motorcycles are great but built for different purposes. That's why we ended up with the DR's because we wanted to go mainly off road with them and have loved it ever since. The price point on the DR's is great and maintenance is super easy, would recommend it to anyone that is interested. *T4S*

My 06 DR650sm came with a wind screen. It hasn't bothered me and is good to tuck behind when big trucks pass by. I love my 650, the torque is addicting and I dont care too much for range or speed. I need a smaller front sprocket, a tm40, and a powercore4 pipe.

Didn’t mention gearing. I have a DR, and have noticed that the stock gearing puts the first gear much too high for off road, not enough engine braking on steep descents, and difficulty starting up hill in steep terrain. There is also a wide variety of carburetor set ups which dramatically change the engine power and behavior. The DR is choked up badly stock.
