Admiral Hipper, the first of five ships of her class, was the lead ship of the Admiral Hipper--class of heavy cruisers which served with the German Kriegsmarine during World War II. The ship was laid down at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg in July 1935 and launched February 1937; Admiral Hipper entered service shortly before the outbreak of war, in April 1939. The ship was named after Admiral Franz von Hipper, commander of the German battlecruiser squadron during the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and later commander-in-chief of the German High Seas Fleet.
Admiral Hipper saw a significant amount of action during the war. She led the assault on Trondheim during Operation Weserübung; while en route to her objective, she sank the British destroyer HMS Glowworm. In December 1940, she broke out into the Atlantic Ocean to operate against Allied merchant shipping, though this operation ended without significant success. In February 1941, Admiral Hipper sortied again, sinking several merchant vessels before eventually returning to Germany via the Denmark Strait. The ship was then transferred to northern Norway to participate in operations against convoys to the Soviet Union, culminating in the Battle of the Barents Sea on 31 December 1942, where she was damaged and forced to withdraw by the light cruisers HMS Sheffield and HMS Jamaica.
Enraged by the defeat at the battle, Adolf Hitler ordered the majority of the surface warships scrapped, though Admiral Karl Dönitz was able to convince Hitler to retain the surface fleet. As a result, Admiral Hipper was returned to Germany and decommissioned for repairs. The ship was never restored to operational status, however, and on 3 May 1945, Royal Air Force bombers severely damaged Admiral Hipper while she was in Kiel. Her crew scuttled the ship at her moorings, and in July 1945, she was raised and towed to Heikendorfer Bay. She was ultimately broken up for scrap in 1948--1952.

Yes, I did not know about this particular fact. Something very similar happened during the raid on the Normandie Dock. IIRC, skipper of German destroyer gave an after action summary to a senior British POW captured during the raid: seems some RA sergeant put up such a fight against the destroyer that the CO had to pass the story on. So, another VC resulting from a report from the enemy and this one for a RA foot slogger who participated in a naval action.

The German Navy in World War Two was quite technically advanced, many of the Royal Navy's ships were starting to age by the time the war broke out. However the British still had a lot more ships, just take the example in your video, a convoy escorted by carriers, escort carriers, cruisers and destroyers, there is only so much one ship can achieve against that. Admiral Hipper's sister ship Blucher was sunk by a Norwegian shore based torpedo battery during the invasion of Norway, sailed right past a practise range with the crew on deck singing 'Deutschland Uber Alas!' Fine ships but out numbered and occasionally badly commanded.
@packr72
@packr72 6 лет назад
Don Felipe The Kriegsmarine was not advanced. They were the only major navy not to adopt all or nothing armor. They didn’t value deck armor and were prepared to refight the Battle of Jutland.
@xnovax5715
@xnovax5715 5 лет назад
Yeah and HMS Hood also had no armor . It was sunk by one coming shell from above .And they was Advanced because Graf Spee was one of the first ships with radar .
@scootergeorge9576
@scootergeorge9576 5 лет назад
@@xnovax5715 - Hood had been scheduled several times to be refitted with additional deck armor which was, in every case canceled or delayed and had yet to be done when she met up with Bismark and Hipper class Prinz Eugen. The Royal Navy was fully aware of her shortcomings and in battle hoped to use her speed advantage to get in close where she would not be subjected to descending shot. But to say Hood had "no armor" is blatantly false. The critical deck armor, while inadequate, was about 2" thick. hmshood.com/ship/hoodspecs2.htm

@DrGull1888 You are correct, Doenitz is not a Guderian, Manstein, Rommel, Hauser, Model, Kesselring and a step below Von Runstedt He is not a hero of mine, I just don't think he deserved the treatment he got at Nuremburg. The thing that most upset me about Doenitz was his insistance on heavy communication with his U-boats during the war and being naive that their enigma machine could never be compromised. So much for newer stealthy U-boats, we knew where they were ahead of time!
@rampking1
@rampking1 13 лет назад
@DrGull1888 I was referring to Doenitz buying time after the fall of Berlin specifically to allow more ( est. 1.5 mil) refugees and retreating soldiers) to flee the east towards the western allies lines. He did this by delaying the negotiations that were pending under General Jodl. This is of course offset to a point by the fact that some fighting continued in some areas. On top of all this many of these same soldiers who surendered to the U.S Army were then transfered to Soviet custody.

@DrGull1888 Ships are not my speciality. Would you know if the new bow was to better handle rough seas or perhaps a little more speed ? I see the Germans did that to a few ships around 1938-40. I meant what I said about your video, you had a lot of photos and facts to assemble and you laid it out perfectly. And the one place you could have faltered, the music, you didn't ! If this is an example of your work, consider me subscribed as of right now.

@@azravalencia4577 I don't know how many German books you've read. But I can say the one thing that everyone calls them battleships. only the british referred to them as battlecruisers and all others have adopted this name from the british. BUT THAT DOES NOT MAKE THE NAME CORECK. because only the nation that builds the ship, classifies the ship too, and nobody else. The best current example: the destroyer 22DDH-class Izumo from the Japanese

@DrGull1888 I am largely coming from the same area regarding history. But for everything I discover or come to understand, I find several issues that don't add up. You are have some knowledge of the history of the Kriegsmarine, you ever wondered why Admiral Doenitz was convicted at Nuremburg besides being on the losing side? As soon as I mention this I am dismissed as a Nazi, but the facts are there regardless. Don't bother to sub me, I have posted nothing, I just study all. Thanks
@rampking1
@rampking1 13 лет назад
@DrGull1888 Doenitz was convicted of "war crimes" that were never substantiated. Crimes againsts peace okay, because he helped Germany break an international military treaty regarding the re-building of the U-boat fleet. I don't think a Grand Admiral of the Kriegsmarine in the middle of a war got stuck in the details of harbor and ship production. As with almost all in the military, never a National Socialist. Many Refugees and retreating soldiers in the east owe their lives to this man.
@arthurmilmore7685

he was convicted over the laconia order. in which a humane jewish commander werner von hartenstien attempted to rescue the crew after he sank the ship. they were rescued sucessfully, but, it became such a farce. that he gave the order that no more such attempts,would be tried
@folkestender2025
@folkestender2025 4 года назад
@@arthurmilmore7685 But you also have to write why there was the Laconia order. A German submarine saved the Laconia-people by picking them up and towing their lifeboats. Nevertheless it was attacked by US aircraft. It was more important to them to sink this submarine, regardless of the people saved on board and in Lifeboats. Dönitz can no longer endanger his own soldiers in rescue operations if the enemy does not follow the rules and shoots at the rescuers and rescued people. Normally the US pilots and their commanders must go to jail, but not Dönitz, who had only drawn the consequences out of this. But in retrospect, winners are always right. Many judgments in Nuremberg were be correct, but some were a constructed farce.
@rampking1
@rampking1 13 лет назад
@DrGull1888 Yep, broke the treaty. U-boats had real impact in WWI and the Brits / French wanted to be sure not to face the same menace gain. As you know better than I, the whole point of the "pocket battleships" was to get around these same kind of treaties. U-boats a lot easier to conceal and develope than a capital ship. I am at a loss, why mistreat and starve the same people that you are counting on to maintain war production? Slaughtering people. Assembly line battle surrendered!
@rampking1
@rampking1 13 лет назад
@DrGull1888 Even the Jews after the war never thought that Doenitz was an actual member of the party. It was an extreme rarity for any soldier, of any rank to belong to the party. The Jews would have taken out after he was released. Personal beliefs? Perhaps completely in line with Nazi ideology, I never read his books or any autobiography. I get your point though, perhaps Doenitz was guilty of being a "yes man" for Adolf .
