Former President Ma Ying-jeou on the morning of National Day suddenly announced that he would not attend the function at the Presidential Office, shocking many in his party. Now it appears Ma’s decision is sowing division within the KMT, with many not approving of his absence. Let’s hear from some of them.
Hsiao Hsu-tsen
Ma Ying-jeou Foundation director
Some of our pan-blue partners and scholars have wrongly interpreted Lai’s speech as a return to rhetoric about the ROC. Han Kuo-yu’s ROC includes mainland China, while Lai Ching-te’s does not. He’s only using the ROC as a shell. The ancestral tablet may say the Republic of China, but he’s actually worshipping the ancestors of Taiwan independence.
Huang Ching-ping
Taoyuan City Councilor (KMT)
“We defended the Republic of China.” “We defended Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu.” “The Republic of China has already put down roots in Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu.” You’re not actually heeding the new things that he’s said in his speech. Instead you are using his past remarks to refute what he’s saying now. If Ma Ying-jeou is to be taken seriously, then most pigs can climb trees.
Tsai Yu-hui
Tainan City Councilor (KMT)
Ma Ying-jeou keeps saying these things, and the KMT keeps losing elections, and the mainland keeps suppressing us in every way, leaving us no room for survival. If the KMT wants to correct its rhetoric on cross-strait relations, we must come up with a new formula, so that young people can get behind the KMT.
Lai’s National Day address explicitly referred to the ROC and its history, but former President Ma rejected it. For some KMT politicians, Ma’s attitude is only making things more difficult for the party, especially with younger voters.
