Back-to-back promos on that piece of equipment we all know that is used for gathering news coverage: the portable news camera. These promos show the difference just how portable cameras have come a long way in such a short time period during the late 1970s, along with the launch of ENG (Electronic News Gathering) a few years prior.
The first promo, from November 1977, most of the cameras seen at the beginning of the clip were the 16mm film Auricon type, commonly used in news gathering from the 1940s to the 1970s based on model changes. One can only imagine how much film stock this station (as well as others) would have to be used to shoot, develop and put the story on the air (hence the old phrase "Film at Eleven", or 'Ten' in the Central time zone), and the high cost to go with it.
The second promo, from May 1980, this time showing the cameraman with his Auricon, and the old method of developing news film, and then onward of using the video camera called 'Insta Kam 3', usually captured on 3/4" U-Matic videotape, or live feed, depending on coverage, and then put on the newscast quickly.
Look for pre-CNN anchor Chuck Roberts in the anchor's seat and Bev Chapman (3 LIVE), later with Kansas City's KMBC.
