I bought a stone blue para 3 LW in 20CV; someone said: that’s a sprint run you can’t use it! It’ll be worth a lot of money some day! Really only bought it for: The handle color and 20CV is a good steel for what i want.

I enjoy my G10 M390 and my Rex 45 lightweight... it's a beast that still disappears in gym shorts. I enjoy the love/hate relationship with sprint runs. "You win some, you lose some", that's what keeps us coming back for more.😃

I partially agree on the sprint run and exclusives thing. Dealer exclusives are absolutely fine and so is the odd limited edition for actual special occasions. Other than that, sprint runs exist to continually trigger people's FOMO. Any knife already has limited availability, both in terms of manufacturing capacity and in time until discontinuation. Artificial limitations beyond that are simply a way to abuse weaknesses in the human psyche. Of course, so are commercials and sales, so this really isn't a hill worth dying on.

Agreed with the custom shop idea. That said, I wouldn't mind if Spyderco went the Buck route and produced less variety of sprint models, but made them available for 1 calendar year.

Got my mystic green manix 2 for my first Father’s Day. So pumped. My wife said the site was down for a large chunk of the afternoon. Very happy with the knife. Plan on using it until it’s no longer usable.

I was unsure how I would like the wire clip when I ordered my Manix 2 lightweight. Once I got it I instantly became a fan, it holds your knife securely in your pocket, and it’s less likely to snag than a regular flat clip.

I have a blue with 110 a black in g10 s30, the lock back , and gave my favorite one away. The d2 black blade with grey g 10 handles

Lucked out and got one from the knife joker. Love the color and blade and carry. The handle is not the most comfortable I've had and I would never call the blade hard use as some have said it is. It makes more sense in a LW format as the tip and thin grind makes absolutely no sense with steel liners and g10 and gimping imo. I personally will only be buying sprint runs from now on as I love the color's and blade steel's.

Sprint runs & dealer exclusives are a nightmare for hard core collectors (which I'm not) who want one of each model. However, for me, they allow for some interesting handle & blade material combinations which trigger me to buy a knife that I otherwise wouldn't. eg. Not interested in Tenacious in black handle & 8CR but; I am interested in a blue handle & S35VN. Strongly agree that Spyderco should have a custom shop!! I would absolutely pay extra for my own combinations. Love the vid.

For me, the sprint run drops are the frustrating thing, and isn't exclusive to the knife industry. There's something limited that has a high demand, and the website offering it usually isn't able to handle the traffic. It's the luck of the draw at that point on if you're able to go through the checkout process before all of them have sold out. I did it once, picking up a Para 2 in Cru-Wear and purple G10 from DLT and it wasn't a fantastic experience, having to reload the pages over and over, trying to check out and receiving errors for close to 20 minutes before I got an order in, and having it confirmed several days later. I know it's expensive to front the cost for them, but when they have a small amount made that's sold in a matter of minutes (sometimes by bots to scalp on auction sites), I think everyone would benefit from the sprint run being a larger batch. With how rabid Spyderco collectors are, those knives are going to move... unless you do something insane like downgrading a knife (Police in 7Cr for instance =)

What irritates me the most are the flippers, and by that I mean the people who will buy as many of the sprint runs from as many of the retailers as they can with the SOLE intention of putting them up on eBay for 2, 3, or even 4 times what they paid for them. Not to use, not to collect, not safe queens, but for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the people who really want a specific run. Unfortunately, there’s probably not feasible way to stop it from happening. I agree about Syderco going the Benchmade way of a custom shop and/or yearly special editions and just do less sprint runs, seems they do these dealer specials and sprint runs on a monthly basis and that’s annoying but another topic.

I think the flippers are great advertisers for Spyderco and they wouldn't stop them if they could. It pushes the false scarcity that drives their prices up.

I don't know if a custom shop is the way to go either. My one and only experience with the Benchmade custom shop is that I had a mini crooked River designed like 4 months ago. I'm still waiting for my mini crooked River. I contacted them and they said that there is a hardware shortage. I'm about ready to cancel that order.

Never tried Manix, got buttload of Paramilitary 2. I never put two and two together that this is similar to Axis lock! Always wondered why Benchmade licensed Spyderco opening feature and Spyderco never tried to license Axis lock. This is like Paul Harvey "the rest of the story" Mystic Green Translucent FRCP FOREVER!!!!!

you probably won't see this but I really want to buy the BHQ manix 2 in mint lightweight. The issue is the construction is all riveted except for the pivot. So question is does it even matter? Can I even change the ball cage? idk what to do lol it explains why it's dirt cheap too so im sketchy about it

They pop up on Ebay from time to time. Also, if you're on Facebook, there's a great group called Spyderco Millie, PM2, Para 3 Club. I think it's open to anyone who wants to join and you can usually find any and everything Spyderco.

LW,G10,TI - Handles SPY 27, 20CV, Maxamet - Steel. Para 3, PM 2 and Manix 2. And set a high end custom Nirvana. Spyderco make it happen. PS: ordering a custom shop 550 next month.

I love Spyderco and have more Spydercos than anything else, but I don't like the direction they've taken honestly. Sprint runs were cool when they were occassional (like the original Waved Endura), but the problem is now it's their modus operandi. You can't get bread and butter models like the Paramilitary 2 or a Manix 2, but you can try your best to get a Jade G10 SPY27 re-issue of the Scorpius. Come on guys. I want Spyderco to win, this isn't a sustainable model.

I think you're right that this is their model, but I'd disagree that it's not sustainable. They're getting people to pay significantly higher prices than competitors, and selling very expensive knifes to collectors who are willing to spend a very significant amount of money over the course of the time they're collecting.

My only issue with dealer sprint runs is the dealers that allow 2 per customer. They're gonna sell out so why not allow more people a shot.

sprint runs are kind of obnoxious but I get their current limitations. That said I'd be willing to bet they could make a killing doing a custom shop like benchmade. Charge double and give people what they want. People would of course complain about the price, but if you wanted that Manix XL in maxamet and mystic green for 450+ bucks, people would pay.

The only Spyderco that I haven't liked so far is the light weight s110v Manix 2. Not smooth at all and the locking mechanism is insanely stiff. I know other people love it and to each their own, of course. The Knife Joker version looks better at least. I still carry it sometimes when I'm wearing shorts. I prefer the Sage 5 lw in that situation.

I like the color, don't like the feel in hand, solid steel though. I got mine in S110V blurple G10. Some hate on 110, I love it, it's been cutting forever. Big in the pocket though. Sage 1 in Maxamet is The King of EDC. 😎🤙 It would be bad ass if Spyderco offered a custom option. I'm not the biggest Benchmade guy by any stretch of the imagination. But, I can't help appreciate The Bugout(why can't Benchmade put the factory edge as good as Hogue) so I had a custom blacked out model made. It's sweet AF to say the least but came with a typical Benchmade edge 👎 so I had the edge handled by a professional sharpener here in San Diego. 14:07 Amen.

I don’t know why exactly but I’m inclined to think that Spyderco isn’t planning on a custom shop option. Sal is very communicative and transparent on the forums. They’re really good about interacting with fans/customers. But I don’t know…they seem to be so busy with the business they have and their back logs seem to be pretty stacked. I just don’t see them putting their current resources into something like a custom shop, as amazing as that would be.

I buy sprint runs because they are frankly a much better value than the S30V and VG-10 production runs. If I can get a much better-performing steel for like $10 more than the base model? Sign me up please. I also only buy knives I intend to use though.

Not to mention the exclusives and limited runs sell out before you get a chance to buy one, only to find out a couple of pricks bought them all up and are reselling them on the secondary market for 150% to 200%. That doesn't help the buyers, the retailers or the manufacturers.

Well I’ve not seen a sprint run that wasn’t sold out before notifications were actually sent in the past year. You need to track website changes on the page to actually get these knives. It’s definitely not straight forward.

Dlt had 2 separate exclusives with availability that ran for more than a few days. One is literally still available and it's been nearly 2 months (20CV Zome Delica). There are absolutely sprints/exclusives that are obtainable if you're willing to look around.

@@metal_complex the only exception is the lockbacks. People seem soured on non fidgety locks. The compression lock sprints are tough to get in on.The Shaman is the worst offender in their lineup as base models with a plain edge don’t stay in stock, much less the last two sprints. Personally I just wish they did what WE does with BladeHQ. 20CV Banter in Jade. Sold through. A few months later they produce, ship and sell more. I bought a second batch WE Banter exclusive. They are sold out again but I have confidence they will be back in stock as long as demand is there.
