my webshop - gentilknives.dk my instagram - / gentilknives in this video i make a fairburn dager dagger from O-2 steel and cocobolo wood. it was hard to make the belvels straight but i think i did af good job :)
Beautiful, beautiful work! a true credit to the original Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife :D I would love for you to make a knife suitable for emergency first responders, e.g. with a window punch on the pommel or a seatbelt hook on one side of the dagger with the rest of that edge unsharpened to aide removal of clothing etc (well, technically it wouldn't then be a dagger but you know...) If you could do that I would carry it in my boot daily XD
As a recommendation: use some sort of colored border around the writing you put in videos. That way the text is always visible when you put it in the video :)
You have to do 3 normalisation cycles : 810° then 780° then 700° we are not at a precision of 20° lol but the grain structure gonna be super fine if you do that 😉
I haven't used O-2 steel myself so far but I think that your quenching temperature was way too high, buddy.^^ It should be 'Hardening : 790 - 820 °C' something like this. And this is definitely not yellow-hot, more like a red-ish color. Otherwise, good job!
Joe the Builder I agree it looks a bit too hot, but as he says the colors can look different on camera.
The dimensions of the blade seem solid. But the hilt looks a bit fat. Where it breaks down is the handle. Its missing the second hip toward the back and its missing the grooves. All probably done originally on a wood lathe. The grooves are important. Highly polished coco bolo. That's like one of those anti stab prison knives they intentionally make impossible to grip wet as a safety feature. The grooves add grip for when its wet with blood. No gooves thats a 0/10 fighting knife. Would not trust..See grain raising. semi poor finish will add improved grip. Are we looking at it? or are we planning on shankings here? Holding it. I think thats the psychology that instills confidence. Are the valleys and troughs placed and sized to where when you put it in your hands does it feel form fit? Does it instill confidence in your grip if you know about the details of getting down with the get down?
Being a knife collector myself it seems just about everything shape and proportion wise is wrong with that.It doesn't look right. That's not a Fairbairn-Sykes dagger.
Why are you cutting like this with your angle grinder ? It's an anormous waste of time, disk and steel Just do straight cuts by follow the line of your tang, you would have save a long enough piece of steel to make another small knife
Stop relying on auto focus. You can manually set focus range. It takes a couple of moments to get right, but makes a world of difference! I've done photography and videography for quite a while. But I like your channel and videos. Just wish they were a bit longer and in depth. Thanks for the entertainment!
