By far one of my favorite knifes so far! The birch bark handle is not only comfortable but also pretty easy to make.
Thanks for watching!

Ever since I first learned of the puukko I have LOVED that style of handle construction. A simple concept that ends up functional and pretty.

That was absolutely awesome. For a young man you are an amazing blacksmith and craftsman. Not only did you do a great job on the blade itself but I was blown away by the way you made the handle. I haven't seen anyone do a stacked handle in a long time and you nailed it perfectly. Anyone would be proud to own that blade including myself. Great job

I have seen how the Finnish make birch bark handles for their knives and they don't use glue. Instead they have the tang pointed like a spike and stab the sheets of birch bark onto the tang of knife, then they pound the bark down using a wooden block or rod that is hallow in the middle to compress them together. They would do this several times in till the desired length is achieved
@jere3604
@jere3604 5 лет назад
yeah, but it probably is easier that way.
@anonimniy

Anthony Trinh , probably , one of the easiest ways is boiling up already compressed handle - birch tar will glue everything instead of you)

I LOVE this knife, it's simplistic yet pretty! One thing that I see LOTS of people do that i don't understand is that they don't put a relief right before the hilt. It leads to a sloping edge after a few years of sharpening.

birch bark Is used for many things. It's very rich in natural oils and tar, so even though it's totally dried it's still very flexible.
@sleestalk
@sleestalk 6 лет назад
maybe it was also used because in finlnd it goes from warm to very cold and that can take a toll on solid wooden handles and might make them crack?
@modeljack2993

Birch bark has historically been used for starting fires and sealing canoes by the native Americans. Tree bark in general has been used by ancient tribes as tree bark tents as homes.

For your tight fit problem : no need for glue nor to punch holes in every single bark piece. Next time, you can make the tang longer and pointy and use it to pierce the bark. You also need to pack the pile with some sort of tube every few bark piece

Super cool. What kind of epoxy did you use for the handle? A longer setting, tougher epoxy I’d think would be better. I’d also slather the the bark in it to toughen it up for the handle when stacking them. I would be worried about some of those discs cracking and coming loose with too weak an epoxy or too little used.

I used long setting epoxy. I did put epoxy on the bark.

I want to try this my self but I have 3 questions. 1. What kind of stock metal did you use? 2. I saw you tempered it for 2 hours in your oven but at what °C? 3. Any tipps on collecting the birch bark? Do I have to let it dry for a few weeks first? Thank you so much for all the videos of your work I really apreciate it! You are great!
