Knife Making - using only hand tools (Finnish style puukko)

This time I challenged myself to make a knife only using hand tools. For the blade I used piece of rebar and old file. I forged a san mai laminated blade. I was tempted to cheat and use some power tools but I resisted and I'm really happy about that. The knife is not the most polished and clean ever , but it's sturdy , sharp and comfortable.
Please give me ideas for materials and types of knives for future videos.

Given the simple yet elegant nature of this style of knife, i believe a handle made entirely of steel or brass would look stunning if you were to add texture or design to it via a file or engraving tools. That being said i love the wooden handles

@@RustLegion Your knife inspires me a lot. Like I said simple but cool (and also very practical). I wouldn't expect you to answer me, and I really appreciate it. I have one question about this knife. Although it is clear at first glance that it is a Scandinavian type of knife, it reminds me a bit of Japanese tanto (san mai blade, pin construction) - my question is: did you inspired by Japanese knives, or is it just a coincidence?
@RustLegion
@RustLegion 2 года назад
@@jistyclovek4693 I definitely was inspired by japanese handle construction . I wanted to be able to remove the handle and to polish and regrind the blade if needed. Also this type of construction is easy to make without the usage of a drill. You just need a chisel :)

A joy to watch this video! There's something for everyone here. Low technology tooles. Excellent and exotic (to me) forging!! Then the forming of the handle (beautifu} and the nice clean lines of the sheath. Regarding the sheath... I've been wet forming, clamping, then an awl through both pieces of wet leather to make the lacing holes, and it sucks. I'm ready to purchase lacing punches {round shape like you used) but thought I'd ask: what hole-to-hole (point on center) distance ro you use? Looked like 3mm, but would like to know. Last, you punched holes on one side for lacing, what did you do for the other side? Might seem obvious, but I want to hear any neat tricks you have. Thanks again for the nice video!
@RustLegion
@RustLegion 2 года назад
Thank you for the nice words. In the video i only show how I punch holes on one side because its exactly the same on the other one and I don't show it because it may be a bit boring to watch. The distance between my stitch holes is 5 mm. The round punch diameter that I use for the belt loop is 4 mm and the distance between the two holes depends on the width of your leather strap for the loop. Mine is around 10 mm.

Old car suspension springs make pretty good knives. They’re all high carbon spring steel.
@RustLegion
@RustLegion 11 месяцев назад
hello , spring steel is good for big choppers , very strong. But for small knives I prefer steels with higher carbon content. So they can cut longer. Also - I avoid using old springs , because they can have metal fatigue and micro cracks inside and they can compromise the strength of the blade :)

The channel I linked literally sells those knives. As long as you re-forge the steel like you did in this video you shouldn’t have any problems with stress fractures. What steel you use for the blades? Sharp and large files are very important when you make blades by hand :D mine is starting to get dull .
@fearthereaper298
@fearthereaper298 3 года назад
One blade is from old file, I like this steel to forge knives, and other (new to me) is from ball bearing:D but I want to use wrought iron and some high carbon steel as cutting edge :D my files are getting pretty doll, I need to buy some new ones :D
@RustLegion
@RustLegion 3 года назад
@@fearthereaper298 don't wait too long and buy new sharp file :D About the laminated blade - try it , It shouldn't be too hard . If I continue to make knives by hand I consider making a japanese sen scraper .

Even annealed high carbon steel will break like that if you make a deep notch in it and whack it with a hammer :)

@@RustLegion your welcome, i came across you channel looking for techniques for cutting metal because the tradition that I'm studying instructs to transform a chisel into a sharpless dagger and doing that with few tools looks a bit hard for me, the book I'm reading is "The complete book of w..." from Buckland, Raymond.
