Hey guys, just a new knife review...I forgot to mention in the video but Chris Reeve started out in south Africa, and the word Sebenza is actually a Zulu work meaning "work" just an interesting fact...
At 2:34 is that his clock dinging in the background? Wow brings back a lot of memories hearing that sound haha funny you can even hear it when he's outside.
There are avariety of models to fit each person, plain or isnert, or even graphic, if you like a large insert you cna get a limited edition version as well...I pondered if I shoudl get a blackwod insert or the micarta but I went with micarat and was happy I think it has more grip than a wood version...
Oh I forgot your right, oh man and i LOVE the blade spine on this one, its rounded, VERY smooth on top if you choke up, very comfy, but if you just rest your thumb naturally there are riges for grip, whiuch are grippy but not sharp...
overall quality, fit and finish, and special features like the pivot bushings and the fact that the same size allen key works on ALL the screws on the whole knife...eays to take apart for field cleanign as well...
1st of all congrats on your purchase, out of the hundreds of people I talked to who own sebbies with inserts, there wa only one instance where I ehar do an insert falling out, in which case they retunred it to chris reeve and he fixed it asap free of charge and returned it in a timely fashion...so you have no worries...
Yes some parts are CNC machines, but they are not totaly made by machines, they are the closest you will find to a custom folder thats not really considered a custom, there is a DVD on how the sebenza is made and all the steps, you should check it out...I find that 99% of the people who don't "get" or "underastand" why these knives cost so much never had one... check otu bladeforums there is a chris reeve section over there, read a few threads...
both top matgerials, yes S30V is more expensive and holds a longer edge than VG10, this knife is technically a production knife but there are many hands on priocesses that go into it, the very tightest tolerances of ANY production folder...
When I 1st got it I wanted to make it my EDC, but it only lasted about a week before I decided to keep it to the side for special occasions, I just can;'t bring myself to give it HARD use, I know it cna take it, but I got this one after my grandfather passed away, he use to love wols, hense the whute owl on the sheath, so the knife has some meanign to me now...So I carry it when I go out to dinner and other special occasions...So yes I carry it, but not often...
@rainmechanic sebenxas can be used as hard as striders the lock wont break the one thing a strider does have over ths sebenza is when it comes to prying, I wouldnt pry with a sebbie but a strider I might...so I agree with most of what you said
I really like how you weren't really biased towards either Strider or the Sebenza, and how you made a point to not overhype the knife. Those are great reviewer qualities. I would love to have a Sebenza, but at this point in my life, the most I pay for a knife is 200. For like a Spyderco Toad or Dodo, or a Benchmade 42.
Well most sebenzas sprt the blue thumbstud, but there are other moesl that have gold studs or plain silver, when ordering be sure to email whoevere the seller is to amke sure what exact model they have...Knifeart is a trusted site to use...
No, but they make lefty sebenzas for lefties...There are alos different models with double thumbstuds for both sides, you cna send it back to chris reeve to have it switched or to buy double studs...they call them double "thumblugs"
Thanks, I have a video on them, you cna buy them on some online stores that sells flashlgihts actually like lighthound I think as well as eknifeworks...this one is their smallest model and costs $10, but you cna get full size cases like for BIG things and they cna be in the hundreds of dollars for one case! pelican has their own videso here on youtube, search for pelican case...
Many do...they want to know which to get if they have the cash and can't pick, but they really are just different knives, it depends what your looking for in the knife, Striders tend to be more tactical and sebenzas tend to be more of a gentlemans knife...
I like them all equalty for their own reasons, the wiliam henry knife is just a piece of art! the strider is a hard use knife thats as striogn as you could ever need, and the sebenza is just a top of the line classy knife...
sometimes on the forums like bladeforums or knifeforums, they hav whats called pass arounds, where they will take a certain knife and people will get ona list to try it out, the knife i sshipped to the 1st person and all they have to do is pay for shippign to the next guy on the list, that way peopel cant try out new knives for the price of shipping, sometiems they will have guys put monye in to buy the knife and at the end raffel it off, see if there is currently a sebenza pass around...
I want it in my EDC rotation but I am just affraid of losing it, lol, I do carry it though on al my special occasions and use it regularly when doing so...
"more than the majority of the knife scene acklowedges the fact that the sebenza is far superior to ANY folding production knife" that was my statement and it is 100% true, and I stand by that statement...even the people who dont own one OR have handled them know they are superior by way of refference to people scomments who own both the sebenza as well as its competetors like the striders and other higher end semi custom folders...
In my opinion No benchamde is better than the sebenza hands down,. its ina different class than regular production knives, most in the knife community will agree...Now Im talking about overall quality and fit and finish, thyats not to say other knives wotn be more useful for specific tasks...
for one the tolerances are way tighter than many other production knives...And what I mean by more hands on processes is that more people touch the knife to make sure its fit and finish is superb...Gte one in your hand before you go on about how crappy it is...the problem is the people who cant own them get jelous and tend to put them down for some reason...
I saw one of these today. A customer came into work today. I had been helping him for a while and kept glancing at this knife. I asked him what kind it was and he handed it to me. Wow, you were right. beautiful knife, worth the money! Nthat being said, I wont have the money to spend on a knife for years...
I have foudn its about the same as plain models but the ti ahndles are darker than regular models from what I have sen in person so perhaps the contrast makes the blades look brighter?
Your right, someone just told me that a few days ago, your 100% right! I always say CRK though, lol since CRKT is mostly known as columbia river knife and tool, haha, it gets confusing for some people...But thanks for posting that fact...
""Unless you are a manufacturer, familiar with close tolerance manufacturing of heat treated steel & Titanium parts, you are not likely to be able to see all of the differences between one of Chris' knives and others. For example; CRK keeps 0.0005 tolerance on surface grinding. That's one sixth the thickness of a hair. Do you have the knowledsge and equipment to discover that tolerance? "
Many thanks for the reviews you give on Knives. I always enjoy watching them and the accuracy of your reviews is spot on. if you can, review the Leatherman K502X Knife or Cold Steel, American Lawman CS58AL
I bought my first Sebenza today (identical model to the one in the video), and my decision to go with micarta was twofold. First, as I'm primarily a collector, I liked it for the aesthetics, and how it felt to the touch. Secondly, while I wouldn't say it improves the grip quality drastically, I do prefer the way it felt in my hand versus the plain one. One of those things that's hard to objectively pin down. You really have to find a place that's got both, handle them, and go with what you like.
sorry for the typos in my replies, but you get what I mean...Im not here to "sell" anyone on the idea of getting one, if the paramilitary makes you happy great, but more than the majority of the knife scene acklowedges the fact that the sebenza is far superior to ANY folding production knife, hanbds down, iots almost anymous on the forums, its shown in knife magazines and is talked about every years at knife shows aroudn the wolrd, it has MANY knife awards under its belt as well...
somethgin as simple as a pivot bushing allows you to tighten the pivot screw down tightly on the sebenza and every tiem the tension on the blade is PERFECT with no blade play in any direction, somethgin you cant do with the paramilitary, you have to play with the pivot and even then you need to loctite it so it doesnt move...the fit and finish beats it, the simplicity beats it, the fact that you only need one size allen wrench to take the knife downb and re-assemble it, the list goes on man...
Nice, you will love the caly3!!! Yes I do still ned a car, I had this knife for a few months now already, its not new, just the review is new, I didn't just buy this, lol...
also to reply to your comment about them niot being unusual, well they have a pivot buishign menaing you cna tighten down the pivot screw all the way and have perfect tension on the blade everytime, now cna you tell me any other knife model that has that feature? I only know of one other ofhand, and that woudl be the striders...but they are also a $400 knives...
Chris Reeves is located in Idaho, not South Africa, he is originally from SA but relocated about 10 years ago !!!. His shop was just up the road from mine before he moved.
Sure...I mena its in a different class because of the extra liike the sapphire inlays in the puch button lock and thumbstud as well as a damscus blade but I will compare the bais william henry design and quality with the sebenza...Just remind me after I do a review on the william henry knife in a message so I dotn forget...
thank you very much, actually my house is only on a 3/4ths of an acre, but my grandfathsr place where we go on the weekends has about 70 acres to play on, haha much nicer! but I live in northeast PA, in the poconos...
thats the problem, you dont have one to hold in your ahnd, looking at specs they seem similar...yeah they both sport S30V...besides that they are entriely different knives...the tolerances onh the sebenza beats ANY production folder, PERIOD...
I miss my small micarta Seb. The pivot bushing is always overlooked and unappreciated. It's one of the key elements as to why the Seb is so good. I don't know if any other knife has one. That's the kind of thinking you get when a skilled machinist makes a knife.
Got my first sebenza this week, from knifeworks. Got a Small 21, I love this knife man, amazing fit n finish. Super solid. And I LOVE the feel of the titanium and the flat finish is verrrry grippy. Still have your sebbie? If not, GET A 21!!!!!!
Strider verse Sebenza...???? 2 totally different knives, neither are trying to be like the other. It's like comparing a Land Rover to a Jeep Rubicon, both are off road worthy yet, 2 completely different types of people buy them. The Sebenza is beautiful, something that you could use in church. I love mine, as for the Strider I don't know, I think it's ugly and would not be as pocket friendly as the Sebenza. My buddy thinks my Jeep Rubi is ugly, see he couldn't be more wrong. Ya get it?
I lowned a paramilitary as well as the regular mil, itarym, great knives, but they cant compare to this one...99% of knife owners who had both will agree..
Thats one good thign is if you do get oen and for some reason dont like it, you cnha gte the majority of your money back is resellign it or even trading for more knives, in many cases people are willing to trade multiple spyderco and benchamdes surpassing the value of the sebenza in trade for a sebenza...With all the talk epople have a strong curiosity to try them at least once, and whats funny is some people end up sellign it, but later rebuys another, lol...
lol...I have all ym Zippo stuff there ready to be shipped, I have to actually sell it 1st, lo, ebay didn;t cut it for me, it didn't get up to my reserve...
I am familiar with Klotzli knives and they bhave aklot of step by step processes, but it still doesnt meet the sebenza...infact neiother does the william henry knives, they are beautiful folders but cant match the tolerances and features of a sebenza, and the william henrys have way more ste;ps doen by hand...so that doesnt prove much either...
ahh, nice I did not know that...I will probably end up getting one seconmd ahnd on the forums whe I am ready to buy...cheaper price for a used one, and since it will be a user I don't mind scratches and that sort of thing...
I agree. I wrote you asking how I could try 1 of these before i bought. I ended up buying a large 21on faith and it is an incredible knife. I have since liquidated my benchmades and bradley alias and now it is the only knife I got. The bradley is nothing in comparison.
You cannot argue this in terms of dollars. Such high-end knives are special, and if you hold them and use them, you would know. I do not own a CRK but I do own Busse's and other high-end brands. Try one. You will understand.
if you want to save money and buy one used try the sale sections on the forums like knifeforums and bladeforums, if you want to buy new try knifeart...
It's worth it! I've had Striders and I just recently got a Large Sebenza 21 again. I prefer the Sebenza much more. It's precision at its finest. Fit and Finish doesn't get any better (In My Opinion) unless you start diving into the $800 customs...and even then...not by much.
I dont have time to even visit the forums these days let alone watch a poll, but please if you feel it will prove your point start one and send me the link, after a week or so Ill check it out...
i was wondering what your opinion of the sog fatcat is. it think it would be a little more fun with the opening system and the fact that it is more stylelized. i've read that its very light and quick. strider vs sebenza vs fatcat is my dilemna.
I should say him and his emplyees cant make them fast enough, the sebenzas have more stpes to be made than any other production folder out there, the sebenza is touched anmd checked by human hands more than any other production knife as well, perhaps aside from william henry folders...
@yourchickenlackslegs whats the poijt of a review like that EVERY knife will cut through stuff, the point of a review is to talk about how good it will cut through stuff and what you will ahve to do to achieve that performance...
@TheMoxyMan1935 Prices are thesame across the board.Best places are KnifeArt,BladeArt,True North Knives and New Graham. Also the various knife forums have exchange areas.
All my sebenzas get used. When it comes time. Send it back to CRK and what ever the condition they can make it new again, also there the only company out there that won't void your warranty if you take apart and clean.
Hey! you should make a video of where you keep all your knives, you must have LOADS!!! i wander how much you've spent, lol lovin' the vids. Thanks, Clem :)
Thanks, its hard because I want to be 100% honest in my reviews and talk about both good and bad aspects of the knives, but there is hardly anythgin bad, I buy knives I like, lol, I know all the facts before hand, it may appear that I onyl talk about good thgins most of the time, ll, but now you know why, hahaha...And rememmnebr whats good for me, might not be good for others...alot of thgins like ergonomics depends on your hand type and size, you know...
Well said! But in my experience CRK's warranty and repair services are great! They're always honest and friendly. I've had several services performed at no charge that, according to their website, they should be charging for.
"In the end, it's all about trust. CRK took many years to build and maintain their repuation. Even those trying to make a "cheaper" version must "leave out processes" or "soften their tolerance", or they will cost as much. Rarely do you pay for the "name". That's a bullshit sales pitch made up by the ignorant claiming to offer the same for less. Money valuation between countries might offer a "deal" for a while until the money value balances, but all in all, you will get what you pay for. "
Thanks, yeah, haha even though I was outside on the deck the clock went off and the soudn traveled through the screen door and into the video, hahaha, sorry man if it really does bother you..
Hey Jeff "...Chris Reeve is located in south Africa..." Just a little correction hes actually located in Boise, Idaho. I know he was raised in South Africa and he might have been born there as well, but from what i know hes in Idaho :D
Most of the gamers I know, including me ( not really a gamer, I just play a game for an hour to have fun once a week ) have two or 3 $650 water gooled GPU's in our computers. The regular GPU's are $500 each & you can use 2x or 3x GPU's to get better frame rates ( fluid motion)
Hype for it maybe but nothing compared to Spyderco sermons regularly appearing on knife forums of all kinds.... "get a millie it'll save your soul" on and freekin on.... sorry for a little off topic but your review was excellent, informative, you still have the Seb? And btw, what are you EDC'ing these days, thanks.
Hye don;t be discouraged, it took me 10 years to finaly buy one if these...sriosuly I coudl never make myself shell out the dough before, and years ago I just didn't have it to spend, lol...
Hey, another great video! I was thinking today and I realized something. I don't think I've ever seen a Spyderco in any of your videos. Are you just not a fan? It is surprising to me that a knife nut like you doesn't have at least one Spyderco.
well some might say the same about ym vopive, lol...but thanks...This knife as well as many others is in another class of knives...Its like cars, some people love to upgrade there cars right, and would say I woudl never buy a 100,000 car, lol, its just the next level of insane collectors, lol...hard to explain to others...
@c0nsci0usness quality, and tolerance, sure materials too but you can get other S30V+ ti knives for less...there really is a big difference in quality over many other prodiction knives, these thigns sell like crazy at $400 - $800 depending on style...look at it this way a $1500 beat up pick up truck will get you to and from work, but some decide to buy a $100,000 sports car instead...lol
