I always wanted to get a Puukko and I was in a perfect country to get one for myself. Those knives were all beautiful and I had a hard time to pick one. However, I couldn’t be happier choosing this beautiful Puukko :)
The store was Kärkkäinen in Oulu.

I love your videos. The Finnish puukko is a tool, but also a handmade artwork. Knive like objects have been used since the Stone Age. The oldest tool in Finland that looked like a puukko was found in Rovaniemi and it is about 2400 - 2700 years old, but the shape of the hand fit, wooden handle Finnish puukko that we know today, was developed in the Middle Ages, in 1300s. It hasn't changed a lot from those days, because it was and still is perfect for its purpose.

jorluo Hi jorluo! Thank you for watching my videos! Wow, that’s amazing to know that old history about Puukko. It’s fascinating. I love using my Puukko which is small but gets the job done :)
@jorluo

@@uemaisadventure Thanks for your answer. Your puukko is beautiful. I'm looking forward to your next video. Speaking about history, there are two amazing books written by Anssi Ruusuvuori: Puukon historia, parts 1 and 2 (History of the Puukko). Both over 700 pages full of great pictures of puukkos and sheaths and puukko belts. I would like to buy them but they are quite expensive. I could spend hours and hours watching those thousands of pictures. I know you would also love those books. If you go to RU-vid (well... heh, you're now in RU-vid) and write: Puukon historia book, there is a video by James Parus who is introducing those books in english. Just look at those pictures. Sorry, I'm drooling :)

Old general rule when choosing a general purpose puukko is that the blade is as long as your palm is wide. That's the reason why so many traditional puukkos have about 100mm blade since that is pretty much avarage of mans palm width. I have found that it has the advantage of having as long blade that you can have and still have control for finer tasks especially when you hold that knife with the spine of the blade resting on your palm or more precisely on your fingers.

I bought my "puukko" in Kiuna, sweden. made by Per-ola Jönestal, google his work! not the fanciest of his works (paid like 183 eur, which is crazy for what i got) but incredibly beautiful, half horn knife. has been with me for 6 years now from 35 plus celsius in swedish lapland to negative 26 with 24m/s winds. I love it! I love that when you find a knife that fits you and your hand you're sort of bonded with it! nice shopping! also the Karesuando you bought named "Giron" means Ptarmigan in Sami!

Sheeesh here in the states you're lucky to find any store with quality knives to choose from. We have Sportsman Warehouse in my area which has the best selection but almost no Scandinavian knives. The market is here but it's ignored ... In Oregon we have tons of hunters and fishing and a store like this would do well .
@DamonKirry
@DamonKirry 3 года назад
There are some, but they are marketed very poorly. Rapala imports marttiini knives as fishing knives. Fiskars knives are common as well. My best finds are usually in the used bins at flea markets or at estate sales. 10 minutes of polishing and another 10 of sharpening and I have a VERY good knife. 👍

It has gone few months now when you bought that puukko. Have you tried that yet and what do think abot it? If you go back to 60th or 70th the one thing what was essential to Finnish people when they went out to wilderness was puukko. That was our universal tool on forest for food, shelter and normal life. That has been also the last weapon on war time. From that era when Finland was part of Sweden and all the way to WW 2. Puukko is something where Finnish people have faith in when it goes tight. I hope that I could tell to you why we have so high trust on puukko. I personly admire Japanese blacksmiths skills and all those different edged weapons what they make. I am what you call a "Dorfkind" and I got my first knife at the age of 7. There are certain things that are useful: A knife, a lighter, a handkerchief.

Mora knives of Finland are very sharp, shiny and very light & seems they have the same shape on all of their blades!
@Oozy9Millimeetah
@Oozy9Millimeetah 5 лет назад
Mora is swedish company/town, good user knives but imo lack "authentic" feel to them because of the plastic etc..
@Oozy9Millimeetah
@Oozy9Millimeetah 4 года назад
@@BasedForever0 don't talk shit boi!! Mora knives have a excellent quality/price ratio, one of the best! How ever a Finnish puukko typically made out of 80crV2 (Laurin metalli) with nice birch or leather handle is a better and nicer knife/puukko. But usually a lot more expensive, a knife you wouldn't want to take to a construction site. And puukko/scandi style knife most likely originates from Finland but it's such an old invention it's hard to pinpoint where it truly comes from and what influences it had to evolve into it's current form.
@BasedForever0
@BasedForever0 4 года назад
@@Oozy9Millimeetah Found the swede. Moras absolutely suck, you can't even sharpen them properly after they have worn out. The fact is that they are a COPY! And what the hell do you know what metal Puukkos are made from? Did you even know that they centuries if not millennias old Finno-Ugric design. They are not a "brand" or anything with a set type of steel. "But usually a lot morre expensive, a knife you wouldn't want to take to a construction site." First of all, if the Puukko is made properly then you can take them to a construction site. If it breaks or gets damages then the problem is with the user, not the Puukko. "And puukko/scandi style knife most likely originates from Finland but it's such an old invention it's hard to pinpoint where it truly comes from and what influences it had to evolve into it's current form." That is completely, naive bullshit. Most Finno-Ugric peoples have Puukko knives and Puukko-style knives. So we can say for a fact that it is a Finno-Ugric design and always have been. Before that cheap shit copycat called "Mora" the only similar knives the Scanditrash had was the Seax and it is far from a proper Puukko.
@Oozy9Millimeetah
@Oozy9Millimeetah 4 года назад
@@BasedForever0 you should take a look what most puukko's looked like pre-factory mass manufacturing era looked like, the current look of puukko formed in the 1920's when Marttiini started to make puukko's on a "industrial" scale, prior to that most puukko's where rather primitive looking, Finno-ugric people's like other Eurasian people have very little of written down history and culture, they say that puukko has had it current form since the 1300's but there is not quite much evidence to back that up. I bet your "authority" on puukko's come just from being from Finland and you couldn't get a hair shaving edge on your puukko if your life depended on it, i can put a hair whittling edge on a puukko and Mora, doesn't matter if it's stainless or carbon steel.
