I already started a series of tests on an FH 31. I'm doing quite a few D2 blades and other steels will follow to show that burnt edges need multiple sharpenings to shine. I'll be sending what I've tested to Kurt to find out how the results compare to what you and others have tested.

LTK , Great Work . I'm So Happy we finally have way to pull the covers off these pretenders who have been screwing us for years. That Bestech Ornetta goes for $254 , and to find out the M390 HRC is only 57 is a big kick in the balls , that low hrc brings the edge retention wayyy down , to probably VG10 levels or something , and that sucks. And then the $199 Shinkansen's S35VN was 56 hrc , thats horrible . Thats 2 different model knives with LOW hrc , they can't say that was an accident. Everyone needs to send those knives back for a Full Refund , asap . And then they wonder why Chinese knives get a bad rap . Those D2 Ganzo's are the BOMB , definetly the best bang for buck knives on the market right now , the 61 hrc is unheard of for the $26 price tag .

It will be very rare to to get near perfect hardness of steels in a "mass production" fashion, let alone slight variables in the steel itself having slight variations from batch to batch. 1-3 point variation has been and will continue to be normal for mass production. Some companies do a better job then others, yes. Exact hardness from batch to batch is just not going go happen from even the best. I also think it is funny about the stress put in hardness, especially with D2. Many say, I want 61-62, then thin the edge and complain on chipping....its NOT all about the hardness as the geometry plays as much of an important role as HT process, there is a compromise always and the no perfect magic number.
@nitrorc4life1
@nitrorc4life1 5 лет назад
@jcoolG19 I feel ya, but the steels you mentioned will still outperform lesser steels at same hardness. But yes, I do understand. I myself stopped caring about that years ago and just enjoy the hobby of collecting, and through use pick my favorite ones by using them. Like 1095, take esee, is it softer then others, yep, does it have its strong points because of it? Absolutely and I use it accordingly, especially on the property. One of my favorite is Kabar/Becker 1095 for mass production. I have some Shadow tech's that do a good job of HT their stuff as well (a bit harder then most by use). If is what it is, just enjoy and throw the duds in drawer or give away and lesson learned.

@southern shop, You quit smoking back in 2018? Dang that’s 👏 I’m retiring in the next few months from the Army and I can tell you; All the smokers, dippers, chewers, energy drinkers, supplementers and anyone relying on a what I call, crutches to get through have NEVER been able to understand where I as a leader and soldier derive my unending energy from. 1 word: SELF. Well done on quiting a “crutch” that saps from all of our natural inhibition, mental discipline and growth. My dad told me 1 thing and sticks true still to this day: I AM MY OWN WORST ENEMY. I MASTER MYSELF, THE WORLD BECOMES MY OYSTER. 🦪 That’s awesome on quiting! I love knives too but of course... I’m a BIG ADVOCATE of evolution of self and the proponent of adaptation and evolution. Anyways I’ll kill this message til the end, and people will hate transparency and the truth.

Thank you LTK, and thank you Kurt! Another batch in the record books. That FH21, was a real nice surprise! I tested my REX 45 PM2, and it came out to 66.5. So Spyderco looks to be real consistent, when running that steel type through the oven too. I pray for a Manix 2 version of REX 45 also. Eric is well aware. of how much I want that to happen. : - ) I am really disappointed in that Bestech Shinkansen, as I own one. Make sure to give them a poke for me too, LTK. And to make matters worse. CPM-S35VN, is one of the easiest steel formulas to heat treat, unless complete carelessness is at hand. It's air hardened, and the tempering temperature would have to get all of the way up to 1,000°F, to achieve such a low hardness number. Which is a long ways off, from the target of 400-450°F. Failure, in a competent process, starts just after 600°F. Grrr . . .

Hey guys, I had a long discussion, several months ago, with the owner of WE on steel and what to call it. In the end he went with full transparency. The WE knives that are labeled D2 have steel that comes from the US or Europe. The Civivi knives D2 is sourced from China. He wanted everyone to know and not hide anything. The reality is that both sources have D2 that meets the standards for the steel, the country of origin is just different.

So. I bought a a Ganzo Fh11 bout two months ago on the heels of it being tested by you I got the carbon fiber model. It never saw hard use. I like the blade shape but the handle was a little thick for my liking. Then they came out with the FH 12 ... I had to have it. It’s much thinner with the steel handles and pretty much unbreakable... I put a 20 degree bevel on it and used it for a whole day today! What a dream... I cut about 60 boxes in to tiny pieces.... cut awesome with not 1 hot spot. I found the perfect EDC!

Impressive performance on the Spydie Military! Ganzo once again showing what a great value they are. I looked on the spreadsheet and saw that an LAPG knife did test as S35VN, but had a dismal HRC. Seems Bestech is having similar problems. Why opt to use a decent steel but do a poor heat treat? That is baffling!

2 points to make... About that BucknBear fixed blade, I really doubt that anyone would buy that as a user knife. It's more like a fantasy knife. So (while interesting) it's not a factor. The other point is... Doesn't harder mean more brittle if stressed? I don't think it's smart to look for the highest HRC. There is a sweet spot and it's not at the top.

The difference in prices of knives is not only due to the cost price of the blade steel used ie S30V /M390 being premium 'super' steels will be more expensive than 8cr13MoV/440C for example..... but what really adds to the difference in knife prices is due to the blade steel processing costs. Forming & sharpening modern hard steel types like S30V /M390 are much more time consuming and more demanding on the production machinery than the forming & sharpening of 8cr13MoV/440C. So how are knife companies reducing costs and therefore making more profit? Easy...by reducing the heat treatment to produce hardness between HRC52.3 (LAPG TBFK S30V) and HRC57.3 (Bestech M390). Lower HRC results in lower steel processing costs as the softer blade steel is easier to form and sharpen BUT STILL the company can sell the knife at a premium price as it is still a premium 'super' steel.
@D00MTR33
@D00MTR33 5 лет назад
The thing is m390 at 57hrc isn't that much easier on belts and machining than m390 at 61-62hrc. It's still a high carbide stainless steel that's very wear resistant. It might perform worse in a cutting test than say a D2 at 60-62hrc but it'll still be harder to grind. M390 NEEDS cryo for a proper heat treat, if you don't use it then you get results like 57hrc. But since it's pricey and to be consuming, lesser brands tend to skip that step and you end up with a sub par heat treat. But to them it still says m390 on the blade which is a buzz steel so if it's priced right people who don't know any better will buy it. They should be using cts xhp instead, that steel is much easier to heat treat, it can be oil, plate or even air quenched and doesn't need cryo to be decent(thought it will benefit from a cryo cycle).

@@hootenknives153 It's a steel not ceramic. Sure I would not pry with it or cut through bones but that's mainly due to geometry. It's a thin stock at about 0.090 ground to 0.008 behind the edge.
