Mr Anderson, I thoroughly enjoy your video’s and their content!! Please feel free to send me any of your knives that you think may be overloading your collection 😁!!! Just trying to help!! Oh yeah… might KC have a prospective date on when the KC Exclusive Hogue will be arriving?? Thank you sir!! Cheers!!!
For the classy fixed-blade, I would recommend the Buck 119 or something in that family. There are lots of options, sizes, etc. and they're all USA-made.
Thanks 2 ALL of you for the amazing content, but I wanted to thank you even more for the extra effort you gave into answering that Marine brother of mine. You'll never truly know how much that means to us. It swells our hearts with joy and pride even if only a resident, such as myself. Btw, modified reverse Tanto is 110% correct! 😆 Haha!
LOVE fixed blades. I want to order a Izula or a Izula II soon (I hope). I’d love to have that Benchmade too; I’ve been drooling over those 2 blades for months
Never enough Knives. Everyday has a different use or emergency. What a great service your whole team is doing for the community of knife and other related issues. Great job as usual and tell Thomas, I'll buy his truck for cheap. Lol. God bless and thank you and Knife Center. I'm going broke!!!
Oorah! My question got answered! Thanks for the suggestions. However, we are leaning towards Buck because they are American made and we can fine simmering suitable under our price point.
I keep thinking that I have “enough” knives but I keep buying more of them. I purchased a nice storage chest for my growing collection and proceeded to fill it up. Obviously at that point I needed another chest. I am in the process of filling up the second chest. I’m not sure what “too many” is but I’m guessing it’s when I cannot find room to store more knives. I have a good sized house so I’m in no danger of reaching that limit any time soon.
@@LonestarTaoboy I have a few knives that I purchased when I started my collection that I rarely use mainly because they just aren’t very good knives or my tastes have evolved. A couple of my higher end knives don’t get used much because I display them. Other than those exceptions I rotate the rest of the collection depending upon my mood and what I’m doing at the time. I enjoy the variety. No two knives in my collection are the same.
Great episode guys! Too many knives is a very different thing when it comes to perception. There's my (very correct) perception of too many knives, and there's my wife's (very incorrect) perception of it.
what about their shoes and clothes? the degenerate mother of my daughters has more than 200 pair of shoes, totally fcked up in the head, and my sisters it's the same shit, always buying useless sh1t, fckin bad role models for my daughters (10 and 11)
Forthe question about the OTF, it should be pointed out that on the extremely rare case where you were to load up the button to the point of launching the blade, it’s not going to stab 3 inches into your leg. The blade will pop off track at the lightest touch and worst case you might get a tiny 1/4” booboo.
Suggestions for a button lock flipper with a thin handle? A Sandrin Monza with a button lock and flipper tab would be perfect. Bonus points for bearings and a deep carry pocket clip.
The reason you can’t swing open and closed the Alliance Designs Mini Slim Pickens, is because the Mini version uses a second internal detent to prevent accidental deployment and less safe guillotine closure. It can be removed with a T8 driver inside. Reminds me of the second detent in the Spyderco Smock. Cheers, DCA!
DCA I need to see the tops Sonoran in large hands. I really like the aesthetics with its upswept blade. Also I’ve been making G10 NPE (non-permissive environment) knives lately and was curious whether or not you see a market for them. As always thanks for doing what y’all do.
Hey DCA, i come a long way in my knife collecting journey but keep thinking back to a cheaper knife i loved but found my self wishing that thier was a more perium version of it since the build quality is lacking.... this knife being the kershaw shuffle 2 i just love the ergos of it sinces it one of the few smaller knvies that feels right in my rather large hands. if it could also be tip up carry that would be great as well!!!
●ESEE Izula in S35VN (The high carbon version is in my EDC rotation. I need the S35VN.) ●Benchmade Hidden Canyon Hunter (In my EDC rotation. ) ●MKM Mikro (In my EDC rotation.) ●Lionsteel M1 Fixed-blade. (It looks pretty good to me.)
As for a classy fixed blade around $100, I'd chose the Buck Vanguard, the Fox BlackFox BF-749 Explorator Fixed Blade Knife, or the CIVIVI Knives C2104A Elementum Fixed Blade Knife (I own the Civivi Fixed blade and its VERY CLASSY and elegant.) FYI, I served in the US Army. Up until two years ago, I owned 3 knives (fixed and folding). Since watching David's video's, I now own over 150 fixed and folding knives (just under $7,000 in knives) and I'm reaching my end point because I'm just spending too much money on knives!!!
I've had that Mini Slim Pickens for a while. Great user knife. It's tricky to swing open because of a detent keeping it closed. Shabazz showed how to remove that in a video a while back. I found that once it's broken in the blade swings out pretty easily anyway, so I didn't do the detent delete.
@@arrowheadguys7637 I've had one for 2 months, been looking for a small edc fixed blade for a while to rotate with a PM2, but wanted a knife I don't care about... I took it in green micarta and it's really a nice small/medium knife with a very good steel for the price (Bohler N690)! The only thing is the original "leather" sheath (which is real s..t!). Just take a custom kydex one !
Hey DCA, definitely appreciate all the guidance and counsel you offer here. Now it’s my turn to ask a question. Can you help me find the right knife? Looking for a light-duty working knife (everything from cutting cardboard to patches of turf). 3” to 3 1/4” long, around 3/4” tall and 1/8” thick. Drop point blade preferred, but wharncliffe or reverse tanto is ok. Tight tolerances, don’t want dirt/sand gumming up the works every time I use it. Don’t want black. Would like a high end blade material, but D2 isn’t a deal breaker. Thanks.
My wife got me a lovely 3-drawer knife chest with subdivided sections.. I initially said I'd not have more knifes than spaces. Then I doubled the knives up into each space. Now they're sorta overflowing onto the shelf. And of course the fixed blades are EVERYWHERE.. I wish I had a good way of getting rid of some of these that I use less. It makes me sad that they're not being appreciated.
I've got CS Code4 in CP and it's honestly all I need for everything. Kitchen prep, work, killing zombies, shaving, noisy neighbors, a lion. I just needed to give it another angle on the blade, I went 17'
For an executive knife I’ve been praising the Boker Spillo since I was gifted one. It’s very slim and a pretty minimalist of an executive knife but it has a look that is different. It may be too nimble for some people but it’s a wonderfully slim carry. Especially in the summer with shorts.
Elmax is one of my favorite steels. It's done well on my GM knives so far, anyway. I love that Hidden Canyon too. I need to pick one of them up at some point. Thanks, DCA and the KC Crew!
@@Mattisfaction I reported you for condiment vulgarity. The internet police are converging on your location as we speak. You would also have to ask Eionan, since he has my Elmax right now.
@@GrumpyGrunt oh I guess I should butter them up. Let them know the catsup in the tree while I relish the idea of condiment police. Ill make like gravy and cover my tracks!
I like the number, 15. I try to keep my collection to only 15 in total: 9 EDC folders, 3 victorinox swiss army (as companion blades to my EDC), and 3 fixed-blades. Not only am I going for quality over quantity, I am also making sure that the ones I have will fall squarely to this two categories: 1. Sentimental Value, 2. I must actually rotate every one of them on EDC. If something in my collection does not find itself in my pocket anymore for whatever reason and they don’t really have sentimental value, I give them away as presents to friends or family… and then I buy something else to replace them.
Absolutely love my PXL in Elmax (even though being in the UK I paid the ridiculous equivalent price of $370!!), in fact it's the favourite folder in my collection. Elegant, amazing build quality and incredibly strong - love it so much that I'm currently saving for the Elforyn version too. In my opinion, Fallkniven are as good as it gets.
I'm gonna say 1000 knives is probably the line of "too many". I embarrassingly only have 4. But I love all 4, and will continue to add to my humble collection. I see some unreal collections here YT.
Hey DCA what steels would you most recommend for a Bushcraft knife? What ones would you most recommend avoiding? That Lionsteel was in M390, would that or M4 work well?
I suspect M390 can't take the impact work and could chip or crack if batoned. If you watch the Dutch Bushcraft Knives channel on YT, they've found the sweet spot is right around 3V, K490, CruWear and Z-Wear or the less fancy M4, M3, M2 and A2. Those are non-stainless tool steels with good toughness. It's tricky to get a hard use stainless that is very stainless and still tough enough. M390 is way too far up the hardness and stainless chart to be reliable. Even VG-10 can be too brittle due to the cobalt keeping the hardness higher. Keeping the chromium down around 14% and the carbon around 1% and some good vanadium and molybdenum for carbides is usually the way to go, favoring more moly since it helps with stain resistance. AUS8 is okay for a low cost, low tech approach but a little soft, while AUS10 or the Chinese 9cr14 would be an improvement and Sandvik 14C28N is a very good budget compromise. Plain 154CM is a good choice slightly above the budget steels. A powder metal version of 154CM such as CPM154, CTS-BD4P or RWL-34, is probably the best middle ground of toughness/hardness. CPM S35VN is pushing the carbon a little bit high and risking a little brittleness but may be good if kept down to about 60 hrc, so then it is really whether you trust the maker to use a reasonable heat treat for hard use knives. And really, that is the big question in bushcraft and other hard use knives - do you trust the knife maker to apply a good practical heat treat and not over-harden? If you never baton or only do very light batoning of small pieces with no forcing through knots, then it is a lot easier. In that case, you can go for rather hard steels although I would still avoid M390 and friends since they could chip some on the heavy side loads during notching work and light chopping. Maybe S35VN at typical hardness up to S45VN and S30V. Without the hard use, VG-10 and VGMAX are reasonable choices in the mid-price range. Fallkniven likes their cobalt enhanced alloys that are slightly harder than VG-10 : CoS up to SG2/SGPS. Even D2 or better yet, one of the powder versions of D2 (CPM-D2, PSF27, K110) could work out fairly well. S35VN is probably the sweet spot for non-batoning stainless steels.
The Sonoma is a great knife but GiantMouse has been using Elmax on much of their line so there are several choices. Several high-end Russian brands also like Elmax quite a lot because it can reach 62-63 HRC when properly heat-treated.
Hi DCA I love you show and I watch it even repeats whenever I can you just press on a lot of knowledge i have been carrying the crkt minimalist as my edc for almost a year now and the only thing I don't like is the steel I'm looking for something with a similar size (2-2.5in) and a good steel that is Onder 70$ and is belt carry preferably scout carry Thank you very much Zeke
There s a clear difference when holding and flipping a cpl hundred dollar knife and up 👍👍. The sheen and lots of things are evident . If a person doesn’t understand knives they have a hard time understanding why they cost more than a kershaw or civivi or kizer which are all great but a lot of the customs and pricier ones just feel different , sound different . I only have one but I do enjoy smiling every time I hold it 😊.
@Robert and Liz Carmichael for the 4th question idk if you are looking for these kind of knife but i would recommend Civivi Lumi in G10, for more budget, or We Eidolon in G10 or Carbon fiber. in my opinion they look great for office and i personally i take Lumi to office
Takes more than one to have a well rounded collection . You HAVE to have a knife for every situation or use . Bushcraft , Survival , Camping , Hunting, Fishing , Self Defense , Combat , and most importantly EDC . That adds up to about eight for a functional collection . Let’s be honest though there really is no such thing as TOO many knives . That reminds me I need to look for a Bali just cuz .
And lets be real, you can't have just 1 of every type of knife. You need at least 2 in case one fails. Make that 3 so your spouse can use one too, and still have a spare. Or perhaps 4 so your buddy can borrow one when you go camping...
@@arrowheadguys7637 haha, i have 2 pieces in case i realy like this one. I have second one in brass or copper. Qsp penguin is so cheap i got it in titanium, other brands are not so affordable for me in this "premium" mode
Hey DCA. Some other fine choices for a fixed blade gift, especially for a Marine, could be the American made White River ATK, or the TOPS Bull Trout (a little over the 100$ mark to be honest).
I have had a cheap kitchen knife for almost 10 years. 2 mm of the ede is gone. It feels like I am anable to sharpen it properly anymore and slices have to be forced a bit. Is it time to buy a new one that will last another ten years? Do cheaper blades have a finite life? Keep ut the good work.
Have to say, I have two knives that have spent a lot of time in salt water and fish guts and their wooden handles have not shown any signs of damage so far !
Wood is unpredictable. Any piece "could" fail. That said, its the oldest handle material in the world, and its been just fine on every wood handled knife, ax, hammer, rifle, etc that I own, despite a steady diet of temperature cycles through hot and cold seasons. I think too much is made of wood grips warping.
Awesome video as always. My question would be... Would you consider doing giveaways of those knives you plan to get rid of for your viewers? I am sure we would all be thrilled to have a Mr. Andersen-owned blade.
Howdy, DCA! Getting my first new knife since a Benchmade Sequel 10 years ago. After months of analysis paralysis, I'm 73% firmly decided on a Hogue Deka clip point. Question: CPM-20CV + G10 handles or MagnaCut + polymer? From what I've read, MagnaCut sounds almost too good to be true--what would you say its pros and cons are? As far as handles go, the G10 looks a little nicer in pictures, but any differences in terms of grip and durability versus the polymer? Or maybe I'll go for something else entirely...like a Mini-Osborne. Or a WW1 style trench knife. Or a....whatever. In any case, thanks for reading!
I got my wife the Deka G2 in the Knife Center exclusive G10 red/black with 20CV. That thing is super awesome and I am really jealous; beats the pants off my SOG AutoTac
I've got the Magnacut Deka with polymer scales pre-ordered. I'm really hoping Flytanium or someone else starts supporting this model with aftermarket scales because I think both the polymer and g10 options are pretty ugly lol. Of the 2 I'd prolly prefer the G10 option, but I wanted to get a Magnacut blade in the collection. If aftermarket scales never come along I might order a g10 Deka to switch the handles and give the leftover knife away.
MagnaCut is all the rage these days and for good reason - combines toughness, stainlessness, and edge retention into one steel in a way no others have done. That said, if edge retention is your main priority, the 20CV should still hold an edge longer. It will also be stainless, but toughness is not its strong suit. This is less of a problem on small folders than it is on larger knives. You honestly can't go wrong with either. If it were me, I would pick whichever handle appealed to me more. -DCA
I definitely think I have too many knives, but still keep trickling a few in. I do have a question for DCA and/or the community here. How much does the blade steel *really* matter for daily EDC type tasks? I definitely tell a difference from the knives I collected years ago which were mostly 8Cr13MoV, but now rotating knives in D2, VG10, N690, and S30V the differences seem so small for routine use and they all seem great! So how much is hype and values on a chart vs real results. This does come with the caveat that I have a Deka in Magnacut on order because, well, Magnacut 😆
I carry a Spyderco Delica 4 clipped to my pouch wallet, the rest is gravy… Moras… Vic Alox… CRKTs… Opinels… it’s an addiction. And most of these are in a zippered pouch in my office drawer. We need help.
Having over 200 knives, the answer is how many can you display without moving to a larger house. At thismoment I have to seriously consider whether I should buy a new knife for the space it takes in my collection. Oh, storing it in its packages is not an option: I want to see the knives.
Good Afternoon Mr. DCA. You mentioned aftermarket, what kind of things are available to upgrade, change, modify a knife, folder or fixed after its been purchached. Love the shows even though I'm in the UK. rgds J
For the gents knife id also recommend the Cjrb ria or the crkt symmetry. I own the ria and carry it alot its one of my favorite knives I own and I just ordered the knife center exclusive symmetry today cant wait to try it out
Few years ago went on a LT Wright spending spree I have 6, as well as some Condor, Benchmade, Cudeman, Helle, Emerson, Buck, Graham. It’s out of control. I use a knife every day but hide most of these guys as a guilty pleasure.
Hey DCA. I always was more of a fix blade person, but now I kinda become interested in some folding action. But I have some prejudice against locking mechanisms with springs because I'm very outgoing and don't want to end up with knife that won't lock somewhere out in the wilds. I'm not sure how justified my concerns are. Are those locks reliable? Would love to hear your opinion on this
Hey David, I hope the move is going well. Ethan Becker! Could you explain the incredible qualities of each of his different knives he designs, and what models would you pick as the perfect set. I have the BK7, BK18, the BK40 folder, and the BK13. Is there something I’m missing? This could easily be a dedicated video as opposed to a FAQ vid. Thanks.
I carefully select the knives I buy. There is not one in my collection that I would like to get rid of. As for the point at which they are too many: If they become more of a burden than something to enjoy.
My collection is steadily growing and I was wondering what the best way is to store my (folding)knives without having to keep them in their box. I would like them to be easily accessible aswell. Thanks!
I have a Spyderco knife roll, hanging in my room with 30 slots + about 5 spaces on a shelf where I display my favorites. So, I try not to exceed 35 knives (this of course not counting my Swiss Army Knives and I have like 10 fixed blades that are stored elsewhere).
Hey, DCA and Seth. I bought a 'tactical' shirt that has two small pockets on the upper left sleeve. One pocket only fits a pen. The other pocket will *just* fit my Gerber Prybrid, but it's a very tight squeeze and not practical. I was hoping my Olight Splint would fit in that pocket, but no way. Is there an executive style letter opener knife that has titanium handles, S35VN steel, is about as long as a Prybrid, but not as wide. Needs to be about as thin as the Prybrid as well. Very deep carry pocket clip will help it look like a pen. Thanks!
Another question: are the Chris Reeves or the Shirogov knives actually worth the price of admission. A lot of people say they are the best but I am hesitant to drop a minimum of $450 on a knife. It was hard enough to convince myself to drop $250 on the Toor Merchant 1
Like many other folks I work from home and lately I'm in the habit of picking a knife out of my collection for the day to fidget with. I picked up a ZT0022 recently and guess what, yeah I accidentally nicked myself while practicing opening it (very minor nick but annoying). I saw your FAQ video after that where you specifically mention the ZT0022 with copper scales and said "be careful" when opening... My question to you guys: how often to you come close to minor mishaps like that and is it more likely to occur on opening or closing? Does anyone else besides Spyderco make a folder with a compression lock? I wish they would migrate that lock to more models.
QUESTION: I've started carrying a small precision screwdriver for my knife maintenance on the go. My question is, have you ever seen a double sided T6 and T8 torx bit??? I'm sure the knife community would buy those up like crazy but I can't seem to find any. Thanks!! - Justin
Another solid video! I dare say you 3 produce my favorite RU-vid subscribing series. Would love to see a video on your favorite budget knife belt if you where to spend the day in the woods. Maybe a include your "Grail knife belt"
I have 10 knives. They ALL get used. No safe queens, yet. All towards the higher end. I tend to spend more on each knife. As opposed to having a bunch of less premium knives that probably won’t get used.
Is there some number that's too many? Not in that sense, IMHO. I'd say outside of a damaging addiction, have fun. They're mostly in the drawer but you just enjoy owning them? Fine. I think if you get no satisfaction of any kind from owning a particular knife you might as well sell it to someone who will, but that's your business.
Question for your next Knife FAQ: looking for a *relatively* inexpensive titanium knife (can be any lock type) with a blade length less than 3.5" and under $200....I was lucky enough to handle a Kansept knife in person and was shocked at how light it was! Now I think I've been bitten by the Ti bug! Any suggestions?
Could you show off some of the best knives (fixed or folder) with neutral handles? I've found neutral ergonomics work best for my weird hand size and I think it could help out a lot of people who have a hard time finding knives that fit their hand. Thanks!
What are the best discreet portable storage solutions for people with too many knives? Most aren't big enough to neatly store ten or so small to medium sized fixed blades.
Actually Elmax performs a bit better in most departments than s30v. It holds the edge better, it is tougher and it's also as easy to sharpen as s30v. Corrosion resistance is pretty much the same as m390 and other high-end pm steels. I didn't try out any MagnaCut knives yet but so far Elmax is my favourite stainless pm steel. Great stuff.
I think that you can't have too many knives. but at the same time I find that each knife has to be one you like. Lately I've found that a few knives in my collection I bought because they were on sale or because they were inexpensive, but don't really care for the design, look it materials. That's when it can seem like you have too many. For me at least.
Hey DCA! You have had the chance to see a huge amount of knives, if you only had to pick two (sky is the limit $, pick one fixed and one folding), what would you choose? Would you only consider a Modified Reverse Tanto? I think you would 🤭 inspired by Thomas
Large-handled small-bladed folder? I have larger than average hands, and really like a full handle, but there are times when I want or need a smaller blade, ~2.5” (e.g. for precision work, or to avoid concerns in crowded public areas, or where limited by law such as Boston). I prefer great materials, but understand my choices may be limited. I just want a medium/small blade with a great full grip in a pocket portable package. Any recommendations?
Hi DCA, Seth and Thomas. Thanks for the great content. When does size matter? I am looking to buy a new Buck Pro series. I can't decide between the "must have" 119 or my on paper fav.the 105 Pathfinder. I would love to see them together. Gets me to thinking of my other want the Cold steel SRK. Go full or compact? When is smaller better, when am I leaving to much knife on the table? Average hands mostly camp tasks, I have a nice small axe. Love to hear your thoughts and maybe some other comparisons, full and smaller versions etc. Thanks again.
It’s like get a nice foam cutout box and have fun filling it . The Apache cases at harbor freight for $30 is a good case to get for any beginner getting into collecting knives . Get two cases . One for American knives and one for Chinese knockoff s😂. Heck you can get on for all just kershaws and ZT s and that would be very cool . Dave you’re a good dude and I enjoy your picks more than some of the other snobby channels but not enticing any names 🙄. I prefer the larger wider knives but can appreciate some slim light ones too but nothing makes me smile more than flipping big boys that do a full drop shit with a push button type angled flipper . 👍👍🇮🇹.
