Once a knight had made the journey from his home to the distant battlefield on which his lord had ordered him to fight, what did he do? In earlier episodes Jason has looked at the knight’s weapons, but what were his battle tactics? How did he approach the enemy battle lines and what did he do when he got there? Jason talks about his own experiences with the lance and fighting from horseback.

I believe it was William the Marshal who wrote that the best possible lance hit was to lower and lock the lance the *instant* before impact. Since he beat so many other knights, that probably meant few people did such a thing (especially since, as Jason points out, you can keep the lance fairly level at the horizontal while charging). Also, the longbow wasn't really a threat to the armored *knights.* It was a threat to their barded horses.

Amazingly detailed video! I remember when I had to do a photo shoot wearing armour and mounted which really highlighted the importance of a trained horse. The lance was oversized and the horse wasn't trained. Every time poor Red saw the tip he would get scared and try to turn to away from the lance was. It got so ridiculous that if I wanted to turn to the side where I had the lance, I'd have to wheel him around all the way to the other side. Funniest part was when I had to "charge" between two female warriors for a photo, without actually hitting them but close enough that it would look like I was. Horse got scared and veered to a thorny tree, I got caught in the branches and almost fell off the horse... Good times lol

Men-at-arms absolutely did use lances two-handed in certain situations. The treatises describe and depict the use of lances in this way. Gripping with two-hands allows you to overpower your opponent's lance using superior leverage. There was actually a lot of feinting and parrying going on with lances. Similar to a swordfight, only at a combined closure speed of 40+ mph. Matrix-level shit.

Great video, thanks. Many years ago in the 1970/1980s as a police officer we did 'riot training'. One of the exercises was with the Mounted Branch (police horses). We, the officers on foot, were lined up with linked arms and we had to practice opening up in the middle to let a row of mounted officers through to charge at the 'rioters'. I can tell you that was scary! The two officers in the middle had to un-link arms and then each side of the line had to move quickly aside to get out of the way and let the charging horses through. I can imagine how frightening it must have been to have them charging at you!

I always prepare for the battlefield with a great big pot of coffee, orange juice and an American style Breakfast. That gets me going. And of course just because I may die, I also tend take a bottle of champagne with that, so I am pretty buzzy in that nice old Winston Churchill way when I go to polish my armour. That on the other hand tends to rather wear me out and so far I have missed the actual battles, due the inevitable and overwhelming need to suddenly have a bit of a kip, what with all the commotion and sweaty work. So I guess am more of a veteran of many great breakfasts really. A knight of the brunch table.

Great documentary - well done. A direct quote similar to the one you referred to - was from Anna Comnenus (daughter pf Alexius I Comnenus - Emperor of the Byzantines during the First Crusade) - Anna's quote was something like "The charge of the Frankish Heavy Cavalry would break through the very walls of Jericho themselves." I'm probably not exact, But Anna's diaries of the First Crusade are an invaluable window into the events. Thanks Again.

Thank you so much for these videos! I like how you let the viewer "behind the curtain" so to speak. For a future vid, is there a way you could show a group of knights in a full cavalry charge? The logistics may not make that feasible, but it's a logical next step from showing the training of an individual knight to how knights fought together. The liability insurance costs alone may not let you do it, but I think it would make a great video!

Very nice analysis of training both knight and horse. I do wonder though if armour (especially barding on the horse as well) would actually slow the charge down from its weight, even despite the articulation still allowing full movement.

Excellent and detailed. When operating as tight cavalry unit did all knights have to be right handed carrying lances? In a melee would a gelding not be easier to manoeuvre than a hyped up stallion? Did medieval cavalry on cavalry engagements exclusively use lance on first encounter (believe in Waterloo lancers were feared by sword carrying Scot Greys)?
@jasonkingsley2762
@jasonkingsley2762 6 лет назад
not sure about later periods, but being left handed in the medieval period was frowned upon, especially by the tutors of nobility. every image I've seen seems to show them using lances right handed, but who knows? Stallions, I think, make much better heavy warhorses with their strength and power, and were clearly used by the western knights in preference to geldings or mares, so it must have worked. However in the middle east and further east I believe mares were preferred.
@xaoc6084
@xaoc6084 5 лет назад
Jason Kingsley Stupid question as I am a novice in this field. If a Knight was left handed would they have any advantage? Just as I know that the construction of castles benefited left handed invaders compared to right handed, same as fencing, etc.
@gaiusjuliuspleaser
@gaiusjuliuspleaser 5 лет назад
@@xaoc6084 Perhaps not in a charge, but in a melee fight it may come in handy, as your foes would typically be trained to face right-handed people. I would say if you had two fighters of equal skill using the same weapons, the left-handed one would have a slight advantage, simply because it forces his opponent to adjust his familiar fighting techniques.
@xaoc6084
@xaoc6084 5 лет назад
Cáca Milis sa Seomra Spraoi The only reason I mention such an idea is because right handed swordsman were usually unfamiliar with a left handed swordsman. I know that left handed people in general were highly frowned upon because of religion, we even see it today with etiquette at the queens table, in which holding cutlery left handed is not considered the normality nor considered at all. I just personally believe that if a knight or a foot soldier was to be left handed in a siege, eg a castle stairwell it would benefit a left handed swordsman than it would a right handed one (hence why stairwells were designed the way they were because of nearly everybody being right handed).
@xaoc6084
@xaoc6084 5 лет назад
Sacha Daenens Exactly the principle used in fencing. In which the left handed combatant would be more used to facing right handed opponents than the right handed combatant facing a left handed opponent, which is no doubt unfamiliar territory.

Slavik Chukhlebov so horses wouldnt break formations from arrow strikes? seems to me horse would be spooked from the pain and break formation. how many arrows would be volleyed? 1,000 plus?
@wayneanderson5293
@wayneanderson5293 4 года назад
How many arrows would obviously depend on how many archers per knight charging. I shoot an 80 lb longbow, and in timed rounds I can shoot 7 arrows in 30 seconds. I have competed against a much faster longbow shooter (with a lighter bow, 60 lbs) who shot 13 arrows in the same 30 seconds. While I suspect the average English longbowman was even faster than that (especially after watching Lars Anderson, though his bow is not a longbow and he's so far from average you can't really compare!), let's take ten shots in 30 seconds as a conservative estimate - one every 3 seconds. We saw the 300 yards covered in 17 seconds, but he said a coordinated charge would be more like 30-45 seconds. So each average archer could probably put 10-15 rounds downrange in that time, getting more accurate and hitting harder as they approached. If the archers outnumbered the knights by as little as 3 to 1 - and it was probably usually much more - then each knight can expect a storm of 30-45 arrows at himself and his horse. Tod of Tod's Workshop convinced me that a well-made breastplate is nearly impenetrable - but armor is full of joints and, as mentioned here, eyeslots. Not to mention that horses weren't armored nearly as well as the knights. The horse's throat seems a good target... Anyway, you asked how many arrows a knight might have to withstand. Figure at least ten for every archer per knight.

i wonder if and how often, foot soldiers were aiming at horse. He was the knight's advantage as i imagine a foot soldier being better weaponed than a off-horse knight. it would be interesting to figure out if foot soldiers would be able to zeroing horse knights after the first heavy charge.

In East Asia there were anti-cavalry weapons specifically designed to cut down the horse from beneath a mounted fighter, e.g. the zanbato (horse-cutting sword). I would bet that, even if they didn't have specialized weapons for the job, European foot soldiers figured out pretty quick that aiming for the horse was a good idea.
@lonewolf209

There are accounts of Dane Axes and Bardiche Axes being used to take out horses. Then, of course, there are spears lances and arrows. Lot's of weapons were effective for taking out horses and I'm certain soldiers figured out real quick that they were soft targets.
