A playthrough of Acclaim's 1989 NES game, Knight Rider.
This video shows the entire mission mode.
Only in the 80s would a smash hit TV show be able to be based on such an absurd premise. If you haven't seen it, David Hasselhoff is a cop that gets shot in the face and is saved by some millionaire through loads of expensive operations. Said billionaire then gives David Hasselhoff a new identity and an AI controlled Trans-Am to fight crime, action hero style. Then the billionaire's son, also David Hasselhoff, decides that he is disgruntled and becomes David Hasselhoff #1's arch nemesis, riding around in a souped-up big-rig armed with rockets. Drama ensues.
That is the plot in a nutshell. I'm not kidding.
Anyways, if you ever watched it, you know just how entertaining this ridiculous plot could be to watch play out. Thankfully, the NES version is quite similar in that regard. Playing like RoadBlasters or a battle-modded Rad Racer, you control Michael (Hasselhoff #1) and KITT (the taking Trans-Am), racing across America to stop terrorists. That's about it.
It's simple, it's straightforward, and it's an amazingly good time. The car upgrades allow for some strategic planning (get the engine upgrades early - that time limit can be brutal!), and it's pretty fun to go launching your car over traffic while peppering enemy helicopters with bullets, lasers, and rockets. In my view, its probably Pack-In Video's best game based on a license - I highly recommended it!

True story....I beat it as a kid, which was really difficult. I was really excited and ran into my parents' room where I walked in on them having sex. Best day of my life turned into the worst day of my life.

"Knight Rider NES?!" That's Acclaim's take on the late Richard Basehart's opening narration that goes like this: "Knight Rider: A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist. Michael Knight, a young loner on a crusade to champion the cause of the innocent, the helpless, the powerless, in a world of criminals who operate ABOVE the law." Those 45 words opened every episode of Knight Rider, which aired for four seasons on NBC.

Knight Rider was developed by Pack-In Video but published by Acclaim Entertainment. While Knight Rider was an outstanding NES game, Acclaim happens to be one of the all-time, if not the worst, video game publishers. Along with crappy games (often based on movies, TV and other intellectual properties, for quick easy profits) the company occasionally engaged in shady business practices, including ripping off both employees and investors. The employees sued and won. An Investors' class action suit was settled with a substantial judgment against at least two Acclaim Entertainment executives. Apparently they conveniently overstated earnings for their personal financial gains. I thank God for the class action suit and the attorneys involved.

It might have Acclaim's name plastered all over it, but If you haven't played Knight Rider, you're missing out on one of the best racing titles the NES has to offer.

Even more, considering that was developed by Beam Software who was known for making crappy games, some being licensed (Back to the Future and Airwolf easily come to mind.). This is the same case. Pack-In-Video was also known for some shitty movie/TV ports. Predator? Die Hard? Rambo?

Kit's fuel economy is improved by minimizing jumping, collisions and managing curves on the inside lane. Occasional, strategic jumping over objects and jumping during a sharp curve can also benefit mileage. Unlike in the real world, driving as fast as safely possible also improves fuel efficiency. Try to collect all the gas icons, but driving mastery is more important. Speaking of which, Knight Rider by Pack-In Videoplays like clockwork when mastered. Reminds me of the fantastic game play in the original Mario Bros. Thank you to the wonderful programmers and even to the not-so-wonderful Akklaim Entertainment executives who brought this game to us. One more tip, and an important one: There is a bulge on Kit's hood. Aim your car with this bulge. Now your can steer precisely and collisions are more easily avoided. Again, thank you to the folks who made this game possible--Great job.

A rental that ended up being so surpringly good I ended up getting it for $20. I was never into driving games until many years later. This game was awesome.

The Japanese version is slightly different. It uses full names for the location list and some of the locations are different, such as El Paso being one of the places that you drive which is not in the American version. Also, in the Japanese version, the last "Home" level is called "Los Angels", a mispelled version of Los Angeles. The funny thing is that they spelled Los Angeles correctly on the first level but somehow spelled it wrong on the last level.

I was a kid when I played this game, so my memories were a bit vague. I didn't remember it had the same bosses over and over. Reviewing it today, i don't like this game anymore.

I loved the drive mode on this, but I could never finish it. Too damned long and always had to return it to the video store before I could even reach Chicago. This is back when I got frustrated and yelled "if only someone could make a feature that let us SAVE parts of a game!"

You've got it all wrong. It was 80s and 90s TV megastar David Hasselhoff who drove KITT, the talking Pontiac Grand Am car. You know what the old Pontiac slogan said back in the day? "Pontiac: We Build Excitement!"

I always came in my mine for a new Sega game Outrun Crimebusters. This features the Outrun Boyfriend and Girlfriend as police detectives racing across major US cities. Like across between Turbo Outrun by Sega and Chase HQ by Taito in 16 US cities from New York all the way to Los Angeles taking down 1 different criminal car in each US city.

It seems like a good game, almost entertaining. I have just 1 question: ¿Where is Kitt in all this mess? I mean, Michael Knight became a killing machine out of control shooting every car that gets in his way and Where is the voice of reason (Kitt) talking to him (and bullying him too)? I'll give it a try.

Yes, you are correct that the shooting is a bit out of place for Knight Rider as KITT isn't outfitted with weapons. In fact, the show itself is (more or less) like a detective show as Michael's task is to find leads and talk to witnesses and find evidence in order to catch the criminal. Of course there are episodes where Michael and KITT face replicas of KITT (like KARR) and even Michael Knight clones. Heck, there was an episode where they try to repair KITT.

Seems like a missed opportunity to create a good combined platforming/racing game (though Billy Bayou tried to combine three genres in one game and the results weren't good), and I don't remember Michael knight constantly gunning down other cars on the highway.

This game is horrible, and I made my dad buy it because I liked the show. I didn't know any better, I couldv'e gotten a Megaman, Ninja gaiden or anything else but no, Knight Rider it was. All I ever saw was the first level. I learned a valuable lesson the hard way back then.
