Given Shad’s obsession with knighthood and his presumption to know what women want better than they do themselves, I’m reminded of one of my favourite Arthurian stories, “The Tale of the Loathsome Maiden”. Sir Gawain is riding through the woods when he comes to a bridge guarded by a Black Knight (sound familiar?) who challenges him to a duel and easily bests him, but withholds the final blow. He tells Gawain that he’ll be back in a year to give him that final blow, unless he can tell him the one thing every woman wants the most. Gawain goes on his way and asks every woman he meets what she wants the most, but they each give him a different answer. Finally on the last day of the year he meets a hideous old hag, who says she’ll tell him the answer to the Black Knight’s riddle if he’ll agree to marry her the next day. Not seeing any other option Gawain agrees, and she tells him that what every woman wants most is to decide for herself what she wants without a man deciding for her. The next day the Black Knight returns and Gawain gives him his answer, and he congratulates Gawain and lets him go. But before he does he says, “You know the answer to the riddle, but do you truly understand it?” That evening Gawain goes reluctantly to his wedding with the horrible hag, but when they retire to their bedchamber and she removes her wedding veil, he’s surprised to discover that she’s really beautiful underneath it. She tells him she was cursed by the Black Knight when she refused to marry him, so that she’s beautiful half the day and ugly the other half, and that the curse can only be broken by a man who truly understands the answer to the Black Knight’s riddle. She asks Gawain if he would rather she was beautiful at night when they’re together, or by day when other people will see her. The funny thing is, this story is hundreds of years old, but if it was written today Shad would say it was “woke”.
Even worse is that he actually has a brother (actually multiple brothers, I think.). Like I could perhaps see an only child make that comment (I as an only child wouldn't but y'know, I could see people who never experienced having a sibling think that). I feel like men like Shad don't understand why a lot of young girls want to be princesses. It's not because they want to be helpless and stuck in a tower. It's more about being rich enough to afford all these nice clothes and having a certain amount of authority and power. Even the being saved element has a bit this in it because a princess is important enough to be defended against harm more than a peasant woman. It is a feminine appropriate power fantasy in a world were other power fantasies for girls are looked down on and not allowed. Young girls do not want to be princesses solely to be the helpless damsel to make boys feel like heroes. They want to be princesses because they want to be rich and important. Yep he/them cannot see the perspective differing from their own, the female side of the knight and princess dynamic. They confuse their perspective for hers, thinking her desire begins and ends at the saving, when for women it extends into the "being valued" just as the knight side isn't about the slaying of the dragon, it's REALLY about the glory and admiration/value afterwards. In both ways, they are stopping their analysis early and confusing the act for the accomplishment. (Which I theorize means they are still "questing" for the act, and have not lived the glory of accomplishment. Kind of sad but also not really their fault that their conservative culture set them up to seek a value that is so outdated, opportunities to enact that value are incredibly rare. Plus the patriarchal society assumptions that only certain, "worthy" men get to DO the act, and therefore the act itself is rarified as is the reward they all worship. It's literally the opposite of an egalitarian worldview, trying to withhold and throttle universal happiness + peace to dole it out only for "good boy" behaviour. These men (and women) are starved then thrown a scrap and told it's a feast, and they have to thank their abusers for the privilege. Extremely disheartening that they haven't realized they are being abused and instead dream of being the abuser. I cannot get over the idea of people being upset that the Mario movie featured power-ups. It's, like, the most iconic part of the games. The thing that people know about Mario is that he eats mushrooms and gets more powerful, or that he grabs a star and then he's invincible for a little bit. Like, I don't know what game they thought they were playing, but every Mario game has power-ups
Also, the film was basically structured like a video game playthrough. Mario fails over and over again because that's the player experience. Games are no fun if you can speedrun them on your first try. And Peach being perfect is because she's literally the tutorial. All that perfection still didn't help her after that. It's Mario who comes to the rescue. Smart writing, fun worldbuilding, internal consistency, and it just goes _whooosh_ right over their heads.
And every mainline game that I personally know of, except for Lost Worlds and Doki Doki panic, introduces some new powerup to mess about with, with some new spin on the core mechanics. Fire flower, tanuki, frog, raccoon, p-wing, skip cloud, music box, warp whistle, hammer bros, cape feather, the wing, metal, and phase caps...even the GB titles gave him a superball in Mario Land 1 and flapping rabbit ears in Mario Land 2. Maybe it slowed down in later games? I wouldn't know, I haven't played past SM64, but I do remember he had a friggin' water jetpack in Sunshine.

My reaction was: "What princess? There's a princess? Why do I care?" The reality is that if a game is fun, the story really doesn't matter. In film, not every story needs to play out exactly the same way; that would be boring. You can have movies where the hero saves the princess and they may be good or bad, and you can have movies that do other things too.
That's the thing, no one actually goes through the games for Peach, she's just a glorified flagpole/star so the conformity is asinine. Its just the fetishiziation of mainting tradition/status that goes far beyond Mario.

I have an actual criticism of Princess Peach. She did not get to be as much of a goober as every other character. Not as many funny bits as all the male characters got to have. Too much of a straight man, which is a role that girls are often forced into in comedy stories so that boys can be funny.
I can see that. I think Bowser would have been a better straight man, as he’s the actual villain. It’s funny to see a turtle dinosaur sing about Peaches, but I think a more definitive threat would have made the stakes higher. You can dunk people in lava all you want, but if we can’t stop laughing at you, then you’re not scary.

(whereas men want to feel that they could save themselves) This ties into the (supposed or not) desire of women to have, e.g. a strong shoulder to lean and cry on. Those are obviously broad generalizations, but I think it's quite telling that for example the philosophy of stoicism appeals almost exclusively to men.
Dude also wrote a story where the main charachter is a mass pedophile rapist who falls in love with one of his child victims years later and in a different body seduces her...just saying it's kind of a trip to see. He justifies it all the way through between bouts of manipulative self shaming like a youtuber apology
It seems Shad just likes the *optics* of a redemption story, but not the actual substance. He likes the idea of the story where a total monster gets a second chance at life and makes up for all the terrible things he did. But what he actually wants is a cookie-cutter male power-fantasy, where the tragic, misunderstood hero gets to prove just how good he is by defeating the evil guys in super duper cool ways. That’s why he and his story always tend to bend over backwards in order to justify all the abhorrent bs that character did and is still doing (like when all of the character‘s r-word victims basically said „no, you don’t get it, we’re glad that he r-worded us!“)
I know that on the surface this guy’s tantrum over “woke” Mario is funny, but as a woman this kind of phenomenon almost terrifies me. That there’s a growing subsection of men that genuinely don’t see me as a person, to the point that any piece of media that doesn’t portray women in the narrow box they think we deserve to be in is scary to me.
Yes! This makes me extra sad because I know my father is engaging with this anti woke thoughts and debating anything nerdy with him is just hell. "Mario nails it because of his natural ability"? I want to remind people that if a woman had a "natural ability" to do something really well, she'd probably be called a Mary Sue by them. Peach was living in the Mushroom Kingdom for years and Mario was new there, of course she had more experience. The whole point of her is that she is Mario's guide and the adventure is one where both have to watch each other backs and defeat Bowser and there is nothing wrong with that.
Exactly, and it's shown that Mario has to learn a lot to get used to the new world he's in. What's ironic too is that in the final confrontation in the movie, Mario and Luigi are the ones who take down Bowser and Peach literally says that they're heroes. They literally save Peach from Bowser. But Mario wouldn't have gotten to where he did without Peach. In my opinion, watching the movie I felt like the obvious main character was Mario, and Peach seemed like a major supporting character, so I don't get why some people were so pissed off. Like, Mario is still the main character and nothing's really changed that much aside from Peach getting more characterization, which I believe is a good thing.

Why do they always misuse the term "mary-sue". Like just because a girl character isn't a useless pushover doesn't make her a mary sue. It's completely ironic how this guy literally wrote a mary sue character in his first book like holy shit.
Well, most people use that term wrong. It's actually a very specific form of bad writing characterized by authors developing deeply unhealthy attitudes towards their characters due to using them as coping mechanisms. Usually when people try explain what a Mary Sue is they just end up describing individual symptoms, not the considerably more troubling underlying problem. Now, I haven't read Shad's book and I don't plan to, but from what I've heard it may actually be a legit case. It sure sounds like some hardcore old school Mary Sueing. Also, Jude: "Gary Stu" in an entirely superfluous term invented by people who were, for some reason, apparently uncomfortable using a female name for a phenomenon that has nothing to do with the gender of the character. There's really no important distinction between a male and female Mary Sue, so the former does not need it's own special label. At the very least, they're completely interchangeable.
Due to the idea of being over idealized defaulted to female (cause idk men are already the ideal?), its being weaponized by chuds to attack any women that doesn't conform to regressive roles.

But it wasn't until his He-Man video, where he insisted on a need to instill traditional gender roles and disparaged discourse around oppression as 'an excuse for failure', that I realized he was reactionary/conservative, went away and never looked back.

Since Peach’s inception, she has been portrayed as both a damsel in distress and a capable heroine. She’s alway been sweet, but tough. Her femininity rivals her strength. The first damsel wasn’t even Peach, it was the beautiful lady Pauline. Quite frankly, Peach’s portrayal in the Mario Movie aligns well the games (both mainline and spinoffs), comics, two cartoons, and the old anime film. Anyone who looks at the Mario Movie and thinks “ew, Peach looks like a ‘woke girlboss’ trope instead of a pathetic princess” doesn’t understand who Peach is, and has always been, as a character. Also, yeah, the “girlboss” trope can sometimes suck and isn’t always good/positive female representation, but it’s not inherently bad/negative either. It’s all about the execution.

I’m of the opinion that “Mary Sue’s” aren’t a character trope as much as they are an effect that a story has when one character is transparently the only character that matters. Like in “Into the Spiderverse” the alternate spider-mans are all incredibly competent, badasses who likely could destroy the collider on their own, like peter A was going to before Miles came into the picture, yet that’s fine actually, because the story is fleshed out. Characters existing and being competent with no explanation isn’t a flaw in story telling, it’d be worse if the spiderverse spider-mans all had to show arcs of themselves growing into their own roles to justify their competence when it’d just re-tread a lot of what Miles was currently going through. These “woke media” right winger bros are just mad that a woman is the competent one and that Mario has to go through an arc (I assume, I’ve never seen the mario movie.) So like, yeah, Princess Peach can just be competent and that’s not a flaw at all as long as the movie is still competent.
@@samkeiser9776 I think Mary Sues are more of a failure to be both interesting and believable, primarily as a consequence of a failed attempt to be more interesting. They're failed power fantasies fail to have any appeal. Can't have interest without stakes or real conflict, can't be emotionally believable when there's nothing to hold onto in terms of character flaws or growth. Normally a writer can get away with failing one or the other of the qualities in a character or story, but failing both makes a synergy of unenjoyable. Take religious or mythological figures, for interest. Typically they aren't believable in the least, and sometimes the universe does revolve around them. But they're interesting in their context of myth, legend and faith, along with cultural and moral interpretation. So It not that a character can't be impossibly powerful or unbelievably important, it's that they have to have a very strong basis for being interesting despite these qualities to work as a character.

The issue with Mary Sues are that they usually forsake the internal consistency of the story and bend the universe around the Sue, unfortunately breaking immersion in the process.
@@pappanalab yeah, but my point is really that “mary sue’s” aren’t a character trope, because a character can have all the stereotypical qualities of a “mary sue.” (Extremely powerful, really important, well liked, significant lineage, other quirks etc.) and still not ruin a story. Some definitions of the mary sue trope have to do with the superficial qualities of the character themselves, rather than how they’re just, in poorly written stories. And when you define mary sues like that, it’s not actually helpful to anyone because it doesn’t really mean anything.

There are a lot of things from Shad's response that seem a little contradictory. A couple that really sticks out to me are 1) the fact that he thinks a gay couple wherein one member being responsible and in control of the household resources is controlling and a r*pe relationship, except that in traditional relationships the man is expressly supposed to be responsible for and in control of household resources, but that's apparently good. 2) he claims that it's woke, intersectional racism to claim that it's impossible for a person to relate to somebody is who not the same sex, race, etc, but at the same time one of his major issues with Mario was the fact that the white, male character wasn't a good role model for young boys, and the white, female character wasn't a good role model for his daughter. Why would it matter? Couldn't the young girls relate to Mario and Luigi and the young boys relate to the heroics of Peach? It's almost like he does believe being able to see characteristics resembling yourself in characters in media can be important to how a viewer relates to them.
The interesting thing is that these stories were some of the first instances of coppaganda. In those days, especially before they had the codes of chivalry, knights would go out and rape women all the time. They came up with these stories, so that they would look better in the eyes of the public. So yeah, it's just awful.
Shad is getting shunned by the rest of Hist-Tube. Matt Easton cut ties publicly in a post denouncing his racism, sexism and homophobia. Didn’t mention Shad by name, but then Shad responded to it disillusioned with the comments, implying he was the one targeted by the post. Other people in Hist-tube have been cutting ties with him too. Skall already did. The only one remaining is Metatron, who I think is somewhat at the fence on most social issues, and is not outright conservative, but does use some pretty bad 2016-esque anti SJW language and titlecards for clickbait. He does make some interesting points every now and then, but at least he’s not outright racist and bigotted.

I love the idea that 'Mario saves the princess' as a core story is this deep, important story as if Shigeru Miyamoto hasn't gone on record saying that the framing story was entirely unimportant and the reason he used almost the exact same framing in The Legend of Zelda was BECAUSE it wasn't important and was always just an easy excuse to get to the gameplay.

I noticed this particular tic that Shad has of ending the sentence on 'okay' and 'alright' and 'you know' whenever he does an alt-right take. I've usually seen it - and on occasion have done it myself - whenever a person makes a contentious point based on how they feel but don't have the facts or data to push back against the counters that they know are coming. In such instances, the 'okays' and 'alrights' and 'you knows' and 'I thinks' and 'I feels' are more than just linguistic fillers. They serve as unstated beseechments to the audience to accept the arguments being put forth at face value, as well as a subconscious assurance to self. You see similar linguistic patterns with other alt-right media personalities such as Ben Shabubu and Jordan Baronet Pwederson, especially in their older videos. These fillers become less prominent as a person becomes more convinced that their arguments/opinions are correct and, therefore, are both less reliant on the audience's agreement with what they say and less in need to assure themselves that they are, in fact, right. Or maybe that's just the way he talks, I don't know. I haven't watched his videos but the way he speaks - and the little wiggle he did when he said biologically male and female people "are quite literally meant to go together" - does give the impression that he is not himself convinced that the arguments he's making are 'correct' but is too emotionally attached to his assumptions to change his opinions. The paradox in all the anti-woke perspective when looking at Mario is that it is a film could be understood as uplifting masculinity. An average working-class man who is a goofball becomes a hero because of his bravery, tenacity and willingness to help others, but I guess that princess Peach wearing pants for about 20 minutes in the film is more important.

The saddest thing to me about Shadiversity is he always has one to two other people on his podcast-type channel but he never stops fucking talking. I can't get over him saying "Teach kids to love who they are" right after quite explicitly stating he wants to see "princesses being saved by princes", screw the girls that would like to be the heroes in the movies, because "that's not who they're supposed to be, that's the boy's job".
He says teach them to love who they are, and then immediately says they must be taught they must be taught only a rigid definition of what they are allowed to be

Like, his opinion on Elden Ring's story is that it was objectively bad because he had to go out of his way to find it. It didn't tell a story the way he would, so it was just bad
By "teach kids to love who they are" he means "teach kids to love the roles I impose upon them". Conservatives desire absolute control over their children, it's a very common theme and they don't particularly try to hide it either. Imagine how far gone you have to be to block your kids from watching Disney movies, kids movies literally trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
I have no idea what their personal opinions are, but just by looking at them they seem to constantly be in disbelief at him. Like, ‘oh my god, this is my boss.’ I know they verbally agree with him sometimes, but they give me strong sucking-up-to-stay-employed vibes.
I mean, maybe as a kink kind of thing, but I don't want to be just passed around as a prize for men. In what situation irl does he think a knight saving a damsel would actually be applicable? Maybe in some disaster situation, but all genders need to be saved and all genders can do the saving. If there was a flood in his town and a woman on a boat can to his house to save him, would he turn her down??? Very odd.

This take isn't just ragingly sexist, it's also fully denying half of the human experience to every single member of the population. Girls can love being heroes AND being saved, *and* boys can love being heroes AND being saved. Both are valid and healthy parts of the full spectrum of emotions that everyone can feel. Trying to lock everyone off into only being allowed to feel one half - or worse, saying that we're all only CAPABLE of feeling one half - is so harmful. I'm so, so disappointed to find out about this. I'm so tired of finding out toxic bullshit about people I used to be a fan of.
Man, what happened to Shad? He went from this reasonable guy who honestly seemed fairly progressive with his takes on female adventurers in fantasy, then one day he just decided "actually, I'm going to become an anti-SJW youtuber years after that fad stopped being profitable". EDIT: Little update, the comments on Shad's video are downright glorious. Don't contribute obviously (I definitely won't), but it's funny seeing his audience calling him out on this.
Man, I can’t agree more. I stopped watching him several months ago and I’m still not over the disappointment. His videos were so entertaining for a fantasy nerd like me, but his steady decline into hate-fueled rants became unbearable. I have a theory that Shad always had those beliefs, but he was wise enough to know that keeping them out of his videos was the best way to keep his audience. Now he feels that he’s such a bigshot he can say whatever he wants. Shad is a textbook case of fame going straight to the head.
I will say, don’t feel like he “fell” into anything. He’s born and raised Mormon, a very sexist, traditional, religion. He just knew to be quiet about it before and now he’s jumping on the Conservatives train now that it’s “acceptable” among large enough viewing groups.
@@chelscara I don't think it's fair to assume he was just lying when he gave progressive takes in the past. If we start assuming dishonesty when people say what they believe, a lot of things fall apart.

Watch Matt Easton and Skallagrim. Been their viewer for 10 years. There are more people to watch, of course, but I fell like Matt and Skall most newbie friendly out there. Other folks are a bit more specialized, like Matt Jensen focuses mainly on Japanese swords and destructive testing, and Sword Sage is all about Chinese armed combat.

The odd thing about shad is that unlike other larger RU-vidrs, he will make counter arguments on anyone who disagrees with with him directly (no matter how large the channel) and I believe that is very telling of his character. It is also funny that he would make counters to a smaller creator, where his video is 3x the length, breaking down every grammatical word in the video.
Actually he does NOT do that. He deliberately picks smallest or weakest-looking channel and picks that as his target. Idea is to bully them to delete their response. Engaging in discussion is not bad trait at all. The fact his replies are insults, bullying and repetition of previous ramblings is much more telling of him.
it seems like shad assumes that a damsel in distress story also ends with certain.....exchanges for the saving, if you know what i mean. man shad is looking grapier and grapier every time i see more of what he says
