Knipex Cobra XS Pump Pliers (EDC Plier Perfection 87-00-100)

The Cobra XS is the smallest version of the Cobra series with a design that is marketed in part as an EDC plier. Knipex shaved off as much as they could to reduce weight and size while still keeping a significant amounts of capability. It's lightweight and thinness makes it easy in either the front or back pocket of the jeans. Even sitting down on it in my back pocket created no issue with comfort.
The cobra jaws are just as good as all other cobras and the ratchet action is very usable even one-handed. The handles are surprisingly comfortable and can get the job done on up to 1/2" fittings (maybe 3/4") and even grab onto straight 1" Sch80 PVC pipe. However, it falls notably short of even the 125mm cobras in comfort and leverage.
Overall the Cobra XS is the ultimate EDC plier, easily surpassing almost any multitool pliers. It is ideally suited for someone who occasionally needs to use them for serious use but for those relying on them several times everyday the 125mm is probably a necessary upgrade.

Great to see how much emphasis and value you placed on it because of how it fit in your pocket. Top notch review criteria.

It’s definitely the defining criteria over the 125mms otherwise it doesn’t really make sense to choose. Unless you need the thinner jaws and the rare occasion that it will fit where the 125mm will not

This answered my questions about the sizes and use comparisons, even against multitool options I considered. I don't have many tools and mostly use a multitool but I've wanted to upgrade to some small quality pieces. The fact the Knipex beats out the Surge was a huge selling point for me, thanks.

Waiting on mine to arrive tomorrow! I'm going to put about 4 or 5 layers on plasti-dip on the handles and take care of the handle issue. I have xl-xxl sized hands and need the grip tbh. Btw, I'm not worried about printing.. I carry an M&P 40 everyday, so that's a moot point. Also, I wouldn't carry anything in my back pocket if I were you. You'll wish you didn't in your later years!

I'm one of the people that is glad they took the dipped handle off of the cobra, that stuff would take the pocket with it, and it feels like nails on a chalkboard to me. I prefer knurled metal, or the slicker version of the dip like they have on their pliers wrench. Still wish they would find a place for a wire cutter on the smaller versions though.
@EngineersPerspective701
@EngineersPerspective701 2 года назад
I also prefer the slicker dip overt the pebbled finish or whatever they call it. That said, I haven't had much issue with the 125mm Cobras grabbing onto my pocket. I probably will still plasti dip the XS for added comfort and to reduce the tendency of the tool to rotate in my pocket.

My XS is just a pocket tool as an alternative to a keychain mini multitool like the Leatherman Squirt, which most would carry as a standalone EDC anyway. Carry mine often with a SAK like the Climber or Farmer X. Also if I want to go a bit more lightweight with a Spyderco Urban, and a Wera 813 bit holder handle which is about the size of a Bic lighter, 2 bits and small extender...same toolset as a Skeletool, 1 oz heavier but more capable and higher quality imo. If I want heavy duty I have a honking great 8 inch West German OG waterpump pliers in my toolbox.

@EngineersPerspective701 2 года назад
You mean the 87-02-180 with comfort grip handles? I can bare down incredibly hard without pain on the 180mm dip handles, 87-01-180. In very repetitive tasks like pulling up 100s of staples it wears on my uncallused hands so I actually picked up the comfort grips. When my hands were tougher I could work it all day though

The ones I got from Home Depot, I believe they were Ideal, did not work great at all. I used a lighter so maybe a good heat gun or different tubing would work better but IDK. I think just buying the dip kit is the best route if someone really wanted some more comfort.

Short answer is the 180mm. Long answer: The 250s for a tool bag are definitely the most versatile. But if I’m moving around a lot on a project, ladders, etc the 180s are my absolute go to. For edc go straight to the 100/XS because of the compact size and good capability.

Great review! I just got the XS and while it is a marvel of engineering the thin and roughly textured handles are a big let down. Especially compared to the Leatherman squirt, which has even shorter handles but feels much more ergonomic. I'm thinking about swapping for the 125's even though they are more of a challenge for EDC. Can you advise on the thickness measurement of the 125's handles? Have you found a good/cheap sheath? Keep up the great work. 👍
@EngineersPerspective701
@EngineersPerspective701 3 года назад
Thank you! Below are some thickness measurements on the 125mm Cobra: 0.454" on the handle 0.490" at the button 0.25" at the jaws The XS handles are definitely a compromise compared to the bigger tools but I think it's a well thought out and nicely executed for the intended use. I haven't found a sheath but TX Toolcrib did a video on one for the 180mm plier wrench I believe.
