But acyrlic is not the only alternative when you have a fiber allergy. Plant fibers exist if you're allergic to animal fibers. The argument for acrylic is really about afforadability and ease of care. Just because it is the worst doesn't mean people need to stop using it if other fibers are inaccessible. You just have to be aware you're not using a great fiber when you pick acrylic.

Agree with poster also ever finer has its place for instance, I never use wool for blankets because acrylic washes so much easer and I’m in a moth hotspot so acrylic is one less thing to worry about and there are some lush acrylics out there

My hot take: everyone should learn to read crochet charts. It opens yourself up to crochet patterns in other languages and it’s really not that hard to learn. I learned to read charts for an amigurumi kit I bought in Japan and it’s so much quicker and easier than several lines of letters.

My hot take is that it's fine to not finish things! I have adhd and used to beat myself up a lot for starting things and not finishing them, but one thing I actually really love about yarn is that you can take it back out. The philosophy I try to have is that any project I don't finish was simply for practice, and I've gotten better at my craft through it even if it didn't end up with a finished object.

Thats an AWESOME philosophy. I will have to start looking at it that way too! 😊 I didn't even consider crafters with ADHD, sticking to one project must be really hard.

@@SheTriedItYT omg it is! But what I do really like about yarn crafts is that you can frog things if you decide you don't want to make them anymore. It definitely removes a lot of the pressure of not wanting to waste materials when starting something new

My payment for being a test knitter was to receive a finalized copy of the pattern I was testing. Not only didn't I get the promised copy, but my test piece was featured on the designer's website.

😬 OH NOOOO!!! I'm so sorry that happened to you. It sucks to admit this, but there are some amazing designers that have TERRIBLE personalities...so, i avoid making their stuff. 😫

I don't have a problem with expensive patterns because there are way more free patterns available than I could ever need. If I think a specific sweater pattern is really pretty but not worth the price to me, I still have thousands of free options to pick from. I've also had reasonable succes just looking at the pictures and figuring out how to make something on my own (not for profit obviously) or adjusting a different pattern etc to be more similar

On the person who thinks patterns should include sizing instead of measuring.... whose sizing? What’s the standard for Xs, s, m, l, xl, etc? You should be measuring. You are making a garment to fit someone, using an artisan craft. I’ve never swatched, but I’m also decently good at spotting gauge issues decently quickly these days. I actually recently pulled out a shawl where gauges between patches didn’t match, and I think the ptsd from it sitting unfinished for 5 years was a very good lesson 😅

😆😆😆 I WISH i could spot gauge issues. That would same me so much time. But i totally agree. I do give sizing in my patterns because i know people like that, but i also provide instructions for how to make the item in whatever size you want. Thanks for the feedback. Yes I am with you. Size SML give a direction, but you should mesure to chose the right size to follow. Plus, sizes are not international. Between France, Italy, UK, USA, and Japan, the expectation for a size M would be vastly different. But I also have heard stories of people buying a pattern on which the sizing consist of "Take a garment you like with similar build, and mesure it, and knit/crochet until you have the same dimension" ; which is totally not a ripeoff

As someone who has knit and crochet for over 20 years, I think prices of patterns are pretty reasonable, though I have commented on how the prices have generally raised in the last years. Especially since the pandemic, which makes sense. A lot of things charged premiums since then. For me personally, I'm not out there buying every pattern I think is cute. I typically add them to my library on Rav and then when I have purchased all the stuff to make one thing, I buy that one pattern. So I'm really not spending all this money on patterns; the price is relatively arbitrary. I do pull my hair at the price of yarn these days. I use a lot of wool, which has always been expensive and now it's just out the ass expensive. Acrylic yarn is unnecessarily expensive now, I just don't get it!! Even at the big box shops, you just have to use a coupon these days. btw don't ever look at cross stitch and needlepoint pattern prices, they are typically way more expensive than knit/crochet. I mean, a needlepoint canvas can cost upwards of $200 before buying any yarn and stitch guide/pattern. And if you have it finished into a pillow or framed? You can easily drop near $1k on a project.

Yes! I'm the same way. With a YT channel, i definitely buy more patterns than the average person. But i also don't buy anything until i know what yarn i plan on using. I had NO CLUE cross stitch and needlepoint patterns so expensive. One of my subscribers told me to check out those crafts, but not if its THAT high. 😐

It’s funny you say pattern makers deserve to make money for their hard work, but buying fast fashion directly supports individuals being drastically underpaid. I really urge you to look into to the world of fast fashion and maybe being more aware of the places you support! Great content btw! Thoroughly enjoy watching these hot take videos 😁

My response for Hot Take 2.. There is no such thing as better, its two different crafts, they just use the same material to work from. I Prefer crochet, and I don't like to knit, but that doesn't mean that knit is bad, in ANY way. Its not, its just not my favorite. Hot take 3: Its not about that knit and crochet CAN'T mean you're about slow fashion.. the take was that its not an instant thing, which I agree with... people that overstash, are not slow fashion Hot Take 4: Lol no. Being able to read a pattern doesn't mean you're better than anyone XD Hot take 6: Personally, I only pattern test, if the final product is something I'd want to buy the pattern for.. So for me, my labor is the price I pay for the pattern :P I'm currently working on a pattern test for a dress Hot Take 7: Cheap acrylic (think, super saver and the likes) are not worth the cheap price.. But Acryllic can be a lot of things, and I have come to really like the nicer stuff (I used to be a snob) Hot take 8: I weave in ends when I'm with people, so the time goes faster XD its not bad to do, its just boring Hot Take 10: No. I need to be able to hop back and forth, if I force myself to stay on a specific thing, I end up resenting it. I do though, put limits on myself how many projects I start, so I don't end up with a billion

I much prefer patterns that just ask to measure, its not out of laziness but out of inclusion to in-between sizes (and honestly all sizes)

Just started crocheting and had to sub! I personally love acrylic yarn so far, I Find it to be cheaper so I can take more risks with new patterns, without having to worry about the cost as much

I've been wanting to knit my newest grandbabies (girls)a cardigan, and I've went back and forth weather to use acrylic or some of my pretty super wash yarn. I think I'm going with acrylic. Because they're babies and the cardigans will need to be washed more often. I also think, go a head and try releasing your pattern if you want and see if everything works out fine. I'm sure it will ! I found you today and I'm very happy to find another knitter and crocheter ! I've crocheted since I was about 11, and I started knitting acouple of years ago and I love it ! I have a small channel, if you would be interested in seeing some of my work. I'm late getting my next video up but I'm hoping to have it up in the next couple of days. I love acrylic but you really should not toss it in the dryer. Wash yes and usually the spin cycle will dry it. And this is because I worked in a dry cleaner when I was younger and they would remind us not to steam or toss in the dryer cause it would stretch it badly.

Oh wow! I had no clue. I've use an acrylic yarn from Hobby Lobby and i dry it all the time. But i feel like that "stretch" just makes it cozier!!! 🥰

slow fashion is about your clothing coming from more sustainable sources AND making your clothing last longer. If you make a lot of clothes but don't keep them for long, or you use yarn that is synthetic/not sustainably sourced, it's not any better than buying from fast fashion. But if you make a piece OR buy a piece and wear it for years and years, that's slow fashion. It's easier to do this with a well-made piece, and most fast fashion brands do not make quality clothing. So handmaking a piece is better in this regard. And of course if your yarn is sustainably sourced that's even better, just like if your store bought pieces are sustainably sourced. I don't have the money or time to spend on sustainable clothing and yarn personally, so I try to buy clothes that will last or that I will wear for a long time.

Serious question - why do people complain about the price of patterns? I think its fair for the designer/pattern maker to charge a higher price because it takes alot of time, effort and skill to make a pattern. If it was easy you would be making your own patterns wouldn't you 😂 Plus once you make the item you have the opportunity to sell it and make a profit. The fact that people complain about pricing just reeks of entitlement. Pay up or put in the time to learn to make your own patterns. Beggars can't be choosers. Simple.

🤣😂 I couldn't agree more. But you know, a lot of people don't want to hear that. It makes it complicated when some designers do have their pattern for free while others charge. I don't think either is right or wrong. But i think everyone should understand that designers are usually making money somehow, whether they charge for their pattern or not.
