Did you know that you can knit socks WITHOUT a HEEL? It's true!
These kinds of socks use a basic rib pattern that spirals around creating a tube sock that fits surprisingly well.

Since I tend to wear out the bottoms of my socks, I decided years ago to knit heel less socks. None of my socks have worn out because of the ability to wear them all around. After spending money, spending time, I have been so happy with the results.

I think that's going to be a good point in their favor for me too as some of my other socks have worn out along the heel. I want to try some other stitch patterns too!

I'm new in knitting socks, found Kate Selene's free pattern for spiral socks plus the vintage spiral socks free pattern, also watched some other videos of the spiral socks (the history of it was interesting). I love knitting the spiral socks because I'm using my worsted yarn stash and wearing these socks keeps my feet warm. Your videos are great to watch, lots of helpful information.

I cast one on immediately after the first mention in the previous video….. I’m taking part in sock madness so they’re on a hiatus atm but I did toe up and am now realising I made the error of doing a traditional wedge toe. My bad, next pair I’ll think ahead, but I’ll glad for the prompt to reverse the spiral - that’ll make them look more cohesive as a gift pair 😊

Thank you for your video and thoughts on these types of sock patterns! I knit donations for the Broadway Youth Center in Chicago and usually it's warm hats and scarfs, but they've just reported back that 75% of their request items by recipients are for wool socks, which left me stymied. How you knit such a customized item for donation? Started researching wartime knitting and found these patterns and what i hope is a solution. Since everyone comments they wear like iron since you don't have a heel to wear through, even better. Your thoughts on the toe are extremely helpful. I hadn't really thought about it and it's extremely helpful and a good solution to what was bothering me about the toe. I was thinking of a Turkish cast on as well for the same reason for toe up, starting with the same amount you would sew up in the decrease method. What do you think? Start with four or so stitches and increase as you would decrease? It would be easier to use the full amount of yarn rather then trying to guesstimate the amount for a decrease toe and hoping i had enough left. I hate yarn chicken. Thank you again!
@NerdyKnitting
@NerdyKnitting Год назад
What a great donation gift - I think these would work well! As far as your questions - there's no reason to NOT start them toe-up just like you described (and definitely a great way to use up every bit of yarn).
@Sincyn241

I’ve been investigating these spiral socks as toe-up, too, and found a helpful video from Roxanne Richardson for a rounded toe-up toe using similarly spaces increases and cast on using Judy’s Magic Cast-On. It paired fantastically with this one for a toe-up version. I prefer toe-up because I equally hate yarn chicken and leftovers.

I really wish I could find a VERY simple no heel sock with an explanation on how to determine the number of stitches for size, as I only wear a size 6 shoe and socks I purchase are always too long for my foot. Unfortunately this triple needle method is way too advanced for me, even though I might manage the pattern otherwise if both socks were done exactly the same way. Could something like this be done in a regular cable pattern?
@NerdyKnitting
@NerdyKnitting 3 месяца назад
Cables would be difficult for socks because they don't have very much stretch and you need a sock to stretch around the foot. As far as choosing the number of stitches, it depends on the gauge of the pattern and the circumference of the foot.

@dorothydishman4664

I simply knit stockinette stitch for a smooth feeling as my feet are sensitive to different textures such as k2p2 ribbing. I like a higher sock so a finished sock measures 19" from top to toe based on 64 stitches and fits a women's size 9. It's a very simple project. Perfect for mindless knitting during a dull meeting...don't we all need to keep our hands busy in order to stay awake and concentrate on meeting content! 😴
@tallcedars2310
@tallcedars2310 Год назад
Good point! I was forgetting my soles are sensitive to patterns. That has me thinking I can still knit a pattern on the calf, and stockinette stitch the ankle down. 🥰

@@dorothydishman4664 does straight stockinette stitch take away the stretchiness of the sock?
@melissajenkins9960
@melissajenkins9960 9 месяцев назад
My feet and calves are about your size I think. I want to use my stylecraft special dk yarn, it’s lighter weight for dk yarn - 22 st and 30 rows per 4”. How would I work out how many stitches I need? I’ve never made socks that fit, I always WAY overestimate stitches and give up.
@NerdyKnitting
@NerdyKnitting 9 месяцев назад
Socks benefit from about an inch of negative ease in general. So measure around the ball of your foot, subtract one inch, and multiply by your one-inch stitch gauge for a rough estimate of the stitch count to use. Round up or down depending on any stitch patterns you plan to use.

Shoe size isn't a great indicator for sock fit - you need to know the foot circumference and cast on enough stitches for that (with a little bit of negative ease) and then the length is totally customizable. And I'd start with a 1.25 mm needle but again, it depends on your gauge (between 8-9 stitches to the inch is good for socks).
