I learn so much from your videos! Every time I see you hand baste and explain that it's not really a lot of extra work and helps in the long run, I think to myself, I'll just use pins. The other night I was pinning the neck binding to a rayon rib knit and realized how many pins I'd used and still wasn't confident that I'd catch the underside of the binding when I sewed the neckline. I thought to myself, what would Karina do? Hand baste! So I did! And that one extra step actually saved me a lot of time. I didn't have to rip anything out at all and I didn't have that little worrying feeling while sewing it. So all of your repetition is actually working--for me at least!! Thank you! Just thought you'd like to know. 😁

I agree that hand basting is an essential step to ensure a good result. As my mother used to say - if you rush through at the start, you'll spend more time fixing your mistakes at the end. Thank you for another well presented video tutorial.

Thank you so much for the tutorial. I imagine if I want to replace a neck band with a bound neck binding such as this, I would need to add about 1/2 inch to the neckline to make up for the band width.

Karina, what is the advantage of overlocking the raw edge of this knit. Would you always overlock a raw edge, even in a non-fraying fabric? I'm asking because I'm trying to understand whether I *can* leave my knits a bit unfinished, and how this will affect seams and looks. Thank you and ❤❤❤ this channel 😊
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 6 месяцев назад
You “can” leave them unfinished. Exceptions: stretch velvet and sweater knits. They do actually unravel. All the rest won’t buy it will look messy inside.

Great ‘technique’ video 😊 Thank you dear . Yr projects are all so neatly sewn . I am still trying to reach this level ! 😮 May I ask you if you have a drop shoulder sleeve shirt, would it be difficult to adjust the sleeves and shoulder seams to obtain a normal shirt without drop sleeves?
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 6 месяцев назад
It would take a lot of adjustments. The shoulder angle and much much more. I wouldn’t do it and instead look for what I want specifically.

Great tutorial and I know I’ll be using it. Hand basting is sometimes necessary and I don’t mind it at all. I do have a seam guide that does hold fabric together and works as a hem guide. Magnets are also great to keep fabric in place and in making patterns.

Im not comfortable sharing that because it’s part of a pattern. You can figure it out though by wrapping binding around the seam allowance so that it covers the seam.

Question on using this technique with other patterns. If using a pattern with another width of neck binding on the pattern, do you need to trim away some of the n3ckl8nr. Ie: if the pattern calls for using a 1/4 inch and this is 3/4 inch, do you trim 1/2 inch off?
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 6 месяцев назад
I would not trim the pattern. I’d just make the binding 3times the width of the seam allowance
@denisesmith7201

Thank you for sharing! I have three shirts laying around that need a binding. I will give this a try for sure! Do you have any advices for binding a slit neckline on a knit top? I have tried the method used for slit necklines with woven fabrics but the results didn't work out at all. It looked awful
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 6 месяцев назад
I'm not exactly sure what you mean with a slit on the neckline? on the center? I have made a little facing in the past for that detail on wovens and knits. Generally, woven techniques don't translate well to knit.
@KleinesMaunz
@KleinesMaunz 6 месяцев назад
Thank you for your quick response! I havea shirt with a round neckline and a vertical about 4-5cm long vertical slit going down the middle. I tried several neckband versions but it either becomes too thick or opens too much (like a v neckline). I think I will try it with a facing and if this doesn't work I cut it to a round or V-neckline and sew it just like in your video here. I have tried it with another shirt. It works great! Thank you again!@@LiftingPinsandNeedles

Karina, I got the 90%…but, what is the band width? 1 1/4 2. .?
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 3 месяца назад
I’m not comfortable sharing measurements of pattern pieces from patterns that are for sale. As a hint, I’d say multiple the seam allowance you want to use by 3 and add 1/4”.
@sherrysenn2177

How wide did you cut the binding?
@LiftingPinsandNeedles

I’m not comfortable sharing dimensions of pattern pieces from patterns. You can your own cutting it roughly 3.5x the seam allowance you want to use.

If this technique is used what width is the binding? 2½"? I'll have to give it a try on a tee I've just cut out. I usually use 85%-80% depending on stretch of the fabric. I rarely use the pattern piece for the neckline or armband if it's supplied in the pattern.
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 6 месяцев назад
I'm not comfortable sharing that because it’s part of a pattern. You can figure it out though by wrapping binding around the 3/4" seam allowance so that it covers the seam.

Do let us know how your tee turns out and the band width you use. 👚
@Torontogal777
@Torontogal777 6 месяцев назад
My guess is 2 inches. (3/4 + 3/4 = 1 1/2 + some extra to cover the seam line.)
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 6 месяцев назад
@@Torontogal777 2” is not wide enough. Think the seam allowance x 3 plus a bit more.
@upcycledcopycat8389
@upcycledcopycat8389 6 месяцев назад
@@Torontogal777 ...¾ seam allowance +¾ front +⅝-1" on the back=2½" I'm guessing. Lost my sewjo this week. Haven't tried it yet.
