Garter Stitch Baby Blanket | Beginner Friendly
I knitted this precious baby blanket with an eyelet border and it’s so sweet and perfect for a newborn or for a stroller blankie! It’s super easy and beginner friendly! It’s considered a corner to corner (C2C) blanket, which is very popular.
It makes a perfect gift for a new mama and combined with a basket of goodies, it’s a lovely baby shower gift!

You can use any size or weight yarn and you can make it any size you want, even as small as a coaster or a pot holder!

Here is the pattern:
I used Big Twist yarn in Damson Purple (371 yards per skein, I used 1 & 1/2 skeins)
I suggest using a Super Saver skein which has (744 yards)
Size 6 needles
CO 5 stitches
K all 5 stitches
K2, YO, knit to the end
Repeat this pattern until the desired half way size
I ended with 148 stitches on my needle, then started my decreases
Decreasing
K1, K2 together, YO, K2 together, K to the end
K until you have 5 stitches left on needle
K1, K2 together, K the last 2 together
K3 together
Weave in your ends and your done!

Thank you for making a baby blanket!! I had my aneurysm 13 years ago. I couldn’t speak or walk afterwards. Now, I can talk, using my wheelchair, read, watching TV and KNIT!! I made 14 scarves for my friends who helped me in the Hershey Hospital!! I am paralyzed with my right hand and leg. I write cursively with my left hand. I can knit, too!! I want to give a yellow baby blanket for my son and wife....NO, they aren’t pregnant!! But, I will give it to them when they !! Thank you, indeed ❤️

Sorry to hear of you having an aneurysm. Your so positive, you have done so well. I still remember a lady I nursed she had an aneurysm at only 47yrs old That was 1989,she has stayed in my memory Knitting is lovely, doesn't it feel creative when you look at the finished garment. God bless you! I had to have an double bypass when I was 48, they say it's genetics and being adopted with no health history doesn't help. I am now 55 will be 56 in July. I now suffer from peripheral artery disease, neuropathy in both my feet stage 5, have had as of this past Wed. 8 catherizations, facing another open heart as now I have 2 blockages on the left side of my heart and thickening of my heart which I am guessing is from the 3 silent heart attacks I've had,atheroscrolosis PAD and of course the main culprit Diabetes. They are afraid I may have a stroke/massive heart attack, I have been crocheting since I was 5 and now have trouble due to numbness in my hands, so as to not lose muscle memory I have started knitting again. You are a true inspiration! I've been severely depressed from all this because I am a big outdoor person, and now I can't garden like I used to, can't get back up on my own because of 3 back operations 12 years ago when a chiropractor ruptured all my discs in my lower lumbar and all my rods and screws need tobe replaced and they won't touch me until we get my heart under control. So now I knit or crochet every day. I am in a motorcycle ministry, haven't been able to ride my motorcycle right now, but we have a charity coming up and I am donating shawls. baby blanets etc. to raffle off for terminally ill children. Again, thank you for your story! it gives me hope! God bless you!

I totally understand what you are going through. There was a time when I couldn't crochet for 3 years because of the pain my thumb. I hope yours improves like mine did. It can still get painful, especially if I'm eating too much bread. I realized I'm gluten sensitive. Have a blessed day! Hugs! 🙏💖😇

SARAH... I had/have the same problem especially with my wrists. I am under the hospital for treatment and will be going to physio. My consultant told me not to stop (even though I have to manually uncurl my fingers sometimes) he suggested some hand and wrist exercises to do which at the moment I turned my nose up at him and muttered explicit words under my breath. They actually do work a little and I can push past the pain gradually each time. There is a channel on here that shows the said exercises with wrist turns and hand stretches. He also suggested to wear a wrist or arm splint. I have only just learnt how to knit so I can just do the old scarf headband squares in knit stitch. Don’t get me wrong I can’t do much at a time and have to take a lot of breaks and it’s so frustrating. I don’t know what your problem is but it’s worth a try. Mine is excessive nerve damage from multiple chest wall surgeries and is now painful from elbows down. Massive life changing effects but I’m not hanging my needles up yet!! Take care

I'm trying make one for myself now already made a blanket for daughters baby on way I go crochet granny squares 9ff y daughters school teacher and joined en up and made a blanket for daughters new baby yet too arrival I'm a self taught knitter always learning stuff I'm a lef5 hander in making a garter stich blanket on circular needles.

Hi - I *just* finished this blanket! I used a multicolor yarn, which actually helped hide some of my mistakes. I'm a novice knitter and I honestly just knit to ease my anxiety when I'm reading for class (I'm a grad student!!), and this was so easy and is going to make such a sweet gift. I LOVE that the "hard" part of the knitting pattern is at the beginning because I can do that, then I don't have to look at it anymore while I knit, since like I said, I read at the same time. Thank you for sharing. :)

Thank you for this tutorial. I’m an absolute beginner at knitting so much so I haven’t even tried yet 😂 I’ve watched many knitting tutorials and I feel this is the one I would feel most comfortable with trying as your video is clear and explained well. I have ordered a few circular needles and can’t wait to start. I have been crocheting for 3 years so I’m hoping with the experience of crocheting I will be able to learn this beautiful craft too. These gloves help you learn the basics. The blanket is great too, but starting with smaller projects helps with dexterity, as well. The blanket can be made with any size yarn and the needles should match the label. Also, the blanket will turn out larger or smaller depending on those two factors. Keep me posted 🥰🧶😀

Just happened upon your video, and love how you teach. not sure if it is on my end or yours but was a tad hard to hear. I've been knitting for 16 years, but never blankets, just fingerless gloves,hats,scarves and prayer shawls. I've seen various videos on this blanket, and I like yours a lot. Just thought I would toss a tip in that I learned from a friend who's been knitting forever,( I am more of a "hooker" lol that is a crocheter, been crocheting since I was 5) The tip is when you come to your last stitch to knit, put the yarn in front as if to purl, then slip the last stitch as to purl ( Don't purl the stitch though, just slip it purl-wise) and then put the working yarn to the back. It makes for a very nice, clean edge. Thanks again for a wonderful tutorial. God Bless!

Love your choice of color. I am currently making baby blankets for my 4th grand baby. You said your a relatively new knitter, I'm so glad to see you teaching others! Can I suggest you try sometime slipping your first stitch, and knitting through the back loop on the last one. Sometimes peoples first stitch is loose and this will prevent that. Your blanket is lovely.♥️✝️

Hey Rhonda, it’s Amber. I still haven’t been able to find those knitting needles those exact knitting needles that you have on Etsy. I was wondering what was the kit that your mother-in-law gave to you that those knitting needles came in because when my mom ordered knitting noodles they were plastic they weren’t metal like yours and I was wondering if those knitting needles that you haveare still existent. Just started this blanket as I wanted something simple to match the colour of my wool ( advanced knitter so hoping I can have this done in a few days ) just wondering what size the finished blanket is so I know roughly to go bigger. Thanks for a wonderful clear tutorial ❤️ love & light x

Hi Ruth, the blanket is approximately 25 inches square. The diagonal is approximately 34 inches from point to point. It’s a small blanket. So just make sure you have enough yarn & you can make it as large as you want. Hope that helps you. Thanks for commenting 🥰

Hi I have just started knitting this Blanket I have just Done about 8 Rows and can see the pattern emerging wonderful I just started knitting myself at 78 years during the covid Pandemic amd into knitting easy baby things and I only knit with Straight Needles SO PLEASE MORE VIDEOS IF YOU WILL OBLIGE Your Videos Explain So Well The Only Thing is I Can't hear Or See very Well It Would help if The Writing was Bigger And on A little longer Please 😀 But Nevertheless You Are Absolutely Amazing For Someone Who Has Just Started out HERSELF Thankyou from a New Subcriber England 🇬🇧 x

This is awesome! I used this tutorial to make my cousin a baby blanket for her baby shower! I want to make another for the girls I nanny. Can I used smaller yarn with bigger needles? The yarn I found calls for sizes 3-5 but wanna try using size 6 or bigger. how would that work?

You can use any size yarn or needles, as long as you are aware that the blanket will turn out a bit more loose and drapey. I would recommend doing a little swatch to see how you like it. Happy knitting 🧶 🥰

Hi. I'm loving the blanket. I've got almost 140 stitches and the side measures only 19" I'm using Berroco Comfort knitting worsted weight with #7 needles. I thought the larger needles would actually make it a bit larger. Am I using a much narrower yarn? Suggestions? Thanks.

I think that will work out to be about 36” square by the time you complete the blanket, which is what mine is. If you want it bigger and you have enough yarn, you can increase as much as you want, just end the half way point with an even number. Hope that helps 😀🧶👍🏻

I would love to try that! I will have to add that to my “want to learn” projects. I did make a baby sweater a few months after I learned to knit and I still haven’t finished it. It’s absolutely precious and I’ll have to finish it soon so I can show it to you 😍🥰🙌🏻

my very first time ever knitting @70 love making this blanket using 101/2 needles and bernat 300G 10.5OZ yarn my needles are almost full with 90s don't think i can get 148s what to do?

I would just start decreasing, unless you have circular needles you can change to. That’s the problems with straight needles, it limits you to a certain size. Keep me posted 😃🧶

Hey Rhonda, knitting needles like that sold out fast on Etsy I had my mom look and my mom said that they sold out really quickly. I don’t know if they’re gonna come back in stock or what’s going on she also told me you can’t return things on Etsy once you’re shopping on it Were those knitting Needles the ones that you’re using ever on Etsy or did they just come in a kit that your mother-in-law gave you? What did the kit look like? Maybe you can send me a picture of the kit that she sent you that those knitting noodles came in, would you mind?

I used 5.5mm, and 29 inch length which was *just* long enough for the size she made. I would have preferred a 36 inch circular needle.

Make sure to use a tight tension when decreasing with first few stitches of each row. I noticed that too, but the tension will help.

Hi Wanda! I'm not really sure, as I am pretty new to knitting, but I think you could definitely do that, it's worth a try. I'm sure after about 10 rows you'll see the type of pattern it's producing and whether you like it or not. I think I'll try that and see for myself! Haha! Keep me posted xoxo

Hi Beth, if you use a that large of a yarn, you might have to decrease once you get the desired width at the center of the square, verses the 148 stitches on my needles. Maybe somewhere between 80 & 100 stitches would be my guess. It might even be less? The yarn that I used was on a size 4 worsted weight and yours will turn out much larger. So, with that said, you are going to have to stop when you think it's wide enough and stopping on an even number row, then start your decrease. You only have to cast on as in the video, then just keep knitting until you get the desired width and then start your decreasing. I believe you should stop on an even row when you decide to decrease. Keep me posted 😃🧶

You can keep going until you have a large enough size of your liking, as long as you have a circular needle long enough and a ton more yarn. Just decrease at the halfway point. It should work out just fine 😃

These needles were from a estate sale. I’m guessing they are from the 1970”s or 80”s. I think it’s easier to use a circular needle though. Hi Amber! They came in a kit that my mother in law gave me at least ten years ago. She got them from an estate sale and they were probably from the 70’s I’m assuming. They are super nice and really easy to use. If I can find them online somewhere, I’ll link them on another post 😀👍🏻

I divided it just to count my stitches. You don’t need to use markers unless you lose count like I do. Haha
