I love these flip top mittens!! I’ll have a pair knit up in no time!! Also want to add, you’re the best knitting instructor ever! Every time I need to know something about knitting,i always put in the search bar ( very pink). You’re so easy to listen to and your instructions are so easy to follow! Thanks 🌸
You are the BEST teacher! I love your tips, or when you say, “This is what I do.” The lifeline for picking up stitches is going to save me. I bought the kit and cast on. I was just waiting for the tutorial. Thank you so much Staci. 😻
I put off & put off using DPNs thinking it was sooo hard. How silly of me. I finally caved rather than keep dealing with magic loop & I’m so glad I did. Thank you, Staci for being such an awesome teacher & taking the mystery out of so many techniques for me.
I agree with your points about DPNs. I haven’t been knitting long (since right after Hurricane Harvey), and remember being intimidated when I first tries DPNs. I encourage anyone who is scared of them to try them. You will eventually get the hang in of it and love them.
I just recently picked up knitting after almost a lifetime of crocheting I clicked on your video because I like the mitts so glad I did I ordered the kit almost done love it between your tutorial and the pattern surprisingly easy I even cheated used crochet hook to pick up sts on back of mitt lol😃❤
You are the best Staci. Started knitting with you over ten years ago. Still learning and knitting with you. Love the simplicity of your instructions. Thanks
omg, the timing of this could not be more perfect, I was debating doing the Mitten tops for fingerless gloves that I've been making but would never have thought to pick up the stitches on the back of the glove as the way of attaching them! I've also never done cables and never done a knit I cord as it's only this winter that I've done more in knitting vs my usual crochet. Thank you so much for this tutorial!
When picking up the stitches at the top of the mitten to add the flip top...I found it so much easier to use my crochet hook to pull up the loop and wrap the working yarn around it then just sliding it onto the needle. Just a thought. It made this step so much easier for me.
I use my smallest 25cm circular needle to pick up the stitches on the glove body to start the flip top, as it's a lot easier to knit across off a needle than a thread.
I really learnt something with this video. I had started knitting my first glove eventhough I am not a beginner I started with a patternn using circulars and I couldn't get the tension gauage right so I checked my trusty go to pattern book and got my gauge right for the amount of stitches for my hand but the instructions on the thumb have confused me and that's because it is knitting in the opposite direction by using the knitting through the back stich. Also I agree about the dns not being that hard or scary to use. .
If I wanted to not use the button, but use the plastic snaps like your other fliptop mittens how would I finish the top? Thanks this is a great pattern, and I so appreciate all your demonstrations.
I finished them today and really like the result! It was quite fast to knit. I made them with two different yarns colours (one for the cuffs, thumb and finger ribs (malabrigo rios in Diana) and the other for the rest of the mitts (malabrigo rio in frank orche).) It looks super pretty! I just made the string for the button smaller by knitting together the last 5 stitches until I had 3 to knit the i-cord. Thank you very much for this video! This helped me a lot! :)
Hello, here I was about to write to you and ask you why you are not using the circular iron, when I saw that a nice circular iron magically came out of the magician's top hat💖 thanks for tutorial 💖
Is there a hint in picking up stitches on top. When I get to stitch 18 or 19 it is impossible to get the yarn pulled through. The pattern says switch to larger needles. I have used the smaller needles to see if that works easier. No luck?
Thank you for this. I would love to have a pattern for flip-top mitts where the thumb also has a flip-top (so you can have an open thumb when you want). Very helpful for work around animals. Thank you for considering
Great instruction for new knitters but one correction, when doing the thumb gusset ... the first increase you said m1L to put the left needle back to front and it should be front to back. You show correctly but verbal is confusing.
This tutorial was posted 2 days after I finished my first pair. I just finished a second pair for the lady who complimented them. I tried the tutorial suggested in the pattern for picking up stitches in fabric and that was an epic fail so not having this video I did a slightly different version of what you do. I did use a darning needle and contrasting scrap yarn but 1) I started two rows below the ribs & picked up one leg of each "v" but 2) I then placed all the single legs on the knitting needle & knitted into them rather than just pulling up a loop through both legs then coming back around and knitting it. The 'flippers' on all four mitts feel very secure and operate properly. Do you see any possible problems with them down the road? p.s. thank you for validating the thumb holes. I've been knitting mittens for a while now & sewing the holes closed but thought it was just me. :)
Thank you for your suggestion re: stitch p/u. I knit continental and am left handed so... as great as these videos are,the method demonstrated here was not going to do it for me 😀
@@SRBMays Let me know how it worked for you. I have now knitted 3 pairs of these and I love this pattern. I also found a hat pattern that matches close enough Alexaner Hawker's Kalaloch Cable Beanie.
I think using a crochet hook to pull the yarn through on the, pick up for the flap part, might be easier and just put the loop onto the needle with the hook instead of trying to manipulate the needles to get under both legs of the stitches on the back of the hand.
I've been scared of trying to add a thumb to my finger-less mitts...... Why?!!! This looks so simple! Thank you for clear instructions. Your videos are so simple to follow! And the two sizes larger tip for a stretchier bind off! Yes! Simplicity itself! Would this be a single size here in the UK as we use mm sizing? Love your channel!
For some reason, when I read the pattern, I thought the stitches for the top needed to be picked up starting from the left🤔 I feel like the stitches are twisted when starting from the right... Correct me when I am wrong
haha, yes, she's a Whippet. And she's a pandemic puppy...she has spent most of her life here at home with me and the other dogs. Her name is Dolley and we've been practicing frisbee every day in lockdown...I can't wait to get her to a dog disc club with professional frisbee throwers. I think she will do well! (My first vax is this Saturday!)
Does the CO differ between the way you do it versus the way I was taught via the thumb/fingers? It took me 40 years to try entrelac - hopefully, doing dpns the way you show will be soon!! TY! You ARE a fab teacher. Sooooo many years of enjoying you.
Casting off using needles 2 sizes bigger, I'm assuming that is US sizes which I think would make it 1mm bigger in metric? (As they tend to go up in 0.5mm increments)
Question. Increase for Thumb the pattern reads “Rep Rnds 1-3 three times then Rnd 1 once again. I am interpreting there is no knit round between the last increase round. Is this correct? In other words there are two increase rounds adjacent.
I like the square interchangeable needles you use in one of your segments. What is the name or brand of those? I know you say, but my hearing isn’t the best.
When you buy a pattern alone from Kraemer (no yarn), it is a download. They will (also) send you a hard copy when you order yarn...you can contact them if you're unsure.
@@verypinkknits I thought I saw the whippet and didn’t remember you having one, I remember your love of your Basenjis for you had that breed for awhile...Thank you for telling me as it was early when I saw her /him and wanted to watch you and not rewind to check out the puppy 😉🐾😊
The mitt part (without the top) is knit exactly the same for both hands. The left/right thing becomes important when you pick up stitches for the mitt top - one side for the left mitt, the other side for the right.
If you order a kit, they will send you a printed pattern, and they'll send you a PDF file if you request it. If you order the pattern on its own (no kit), you will be send a PDF download.
You can contact Kraemer Yarns for another copy of your pattern. Or if you purchased through Ravelry and you're not seeing it in your library, visit their Purchase Finder feature: ravelry.com/purchasefinder
I tried ordering the KIT for making the mittens. I'm not sure what's going on with the website but they wouldn't let me delete a color or a kit. It took a while to finally delete it to make the purchase. The company took my account number and charged me for the kit. I don't mind paying for what I order but I received an email telling me I had something in my "cart" and needed to complete the purchase before they could send my order. I checked and the color I ordered is still in the cart. If the purchase went through then they sent me the incorrect color--charged me for it and then said I had to complete the purchase by resubmitting my card information. I don't think I will be ordering from this company again.
Sorry you're having a tough time, Sharon. You can trust Kraemer to provide great customer service - I only work with companies that do! Please contact them and give them the chance to make it right.
