The fit of a gusset/heel flap sock, the ease of toe-up! This pattern comes with a three-part video tutorial. Get your pattern to follow along here:
verypink.com/2019/05/15/toe-u...
You can add these socks to your Ravelry queue here:
www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr...
In the demonstration, I use much bigger needles and thicker yarn to make it easier to see the techniques used.
The poncho on the mannequin is my Rodeo Drive Poncho, pattern and video tutorial:
verypink.com/2013/12/20/rodeo...
The yarn used in my finished socks is:
Striped - Turtlepurl Yarns "A Stroll Down Duckworth Street"
Solid - Roots and Rain Yarn, naturally dyed with indigo and onion skin
The yarn I use for demonstration is Deramores Tweedy DK, in color Cornish Sea. Please note! This is worsted weight yarn, used only for demonstration. The pattern uses sock (fingering) weight yarn.
The circular needles I used for the cast-on are Knitter's Pride Zings from an interchangeable set.
The 9" circulars are Knitter's Pride Dreamz.
The DPNs are Knitter's Pride Ginger.

When you are a newbie, that first heel turn is amazing. Experienced knitters will listen to you pratt on about how exciting it was. They listen because it brings back a little of the thrill they still remember from their first heel turn. Glad to see that whether it is cuff down, or toe up, still an amazing thing. Thank you Very Pink for making an easy to follow tutorial [as always]. The very experienced, knitter who I chatted on about my first heel turn, was a very patient man and I can still see his slight smile and nodding head.

I have been using increases on my toe up socks lately. But it was my own fudging the fit. Now I have a designer pattern to follow. Thank you Staci for always anticipating what I need to be a successful sock knitter.❤️

I love this version of a gusset sock! The toe-up gusset sock patterns I've seen still do a traditional heel flap where you have to pick up stitches along the sides of the flap, which I hate. So glad this pattern is worked in the round the whole way through!

Staci, you are so good at these videos and tutorials are brilliant. I have mastered the magic cast on, the heel turn and the gusset but haven't actually done a toe before until now. I have practiced the Judy's Magic Cast on but never have I knit a full toe up sock ...... until now, with you on my shoulder in my lounge. Thank you for your guidance and warm as well. Take care.

My solution to wanting to do heel flap socks but having no idea what length of leg my stash yarn would make was to start with a provisional cast-on, knit both heels, feet and toes, then divide the yarn into two balls, pick up the provisional stitches and knit the legs upward. I used Judy's Magic Cast-on as the provisional, putting the cord stitches on a sturdy lifeline to serve as a flexible stitch holder and just starting to knit in the round. I did about an inch of stockinette, tested the fit above my ankle, then did the heel flap etc. Thanks for teaching me provisional cast - on! (But I hate picking out the crochet so came up with this instead.)

Thank you! I have seen other toe up socks videos before, some using this cast on, and your video is the first time I could get it to work. Then the first time I tried to go further,, I had the toe inside out. There's a little rib on one side of the cast-on and a little ditch on the other. You have to keep the ditch toward you and then the toe works properly. Then I got to the additions for the gusset. I was using a fingering yarn (leftovers from another project) and my m1s left a lacy pattern. I went back to minute 30 and I am doing the m1 the same way you do so I guess it's just a matter of yarn weight. Third issue: your video was the first one I found that did a good job of demonstrating German short rows. I was finally able to turn a heel this way after knitting dozens of pairs top down from Carol Anderson's Iowa Cruise Sock pattern. I always like learning new skills and your video is a two-fer. THANK YOU!

Thanks for this video. I've been thinking about trying my hand at socks again as haven't knit any in years. I also like doing them toe-up with Judy's magic cast on but haven't tried with a gusset heel. I also knit them 2 at a time on a large circular so they match and I don't have to keep track of the transitions. To make sure I have enough yarn for both, I divide my skein by balling it into two balls then adjusting them back and forth until they both weigh the same on a kitchen scale (using grams to get the most accuracy) so I don't wind up with a short sock. Thanks again!

Thank you for helping me understand the process involved in the gusset, heel turn, and heel flap which is the way the pattern I’m using is written (not yours, though😕; another time!). I’ve only done top down before and the other toe up video I watched made the heel flap first, then the turn, then picked up for the gusset decrease. I like this. TUGS!!!

I just bought your pattern, and I'm wondering, how do I adapt the pattern for DK weight yarn to make some chunky socks? I have never knit any socks, but your method has sold me on trying. I like that the cast on closes the toe, so no provisional step, and the heel is seamless, and knitting to the top of the sock means you don't have to worry about running out of yarn. Very smart way to do it, and the sock looks really good, the heel isn't sticking out looking weird.

Hi! Thank you so much for making a this beautiful pattern and tutorial for us. Does the German short row include the first stitch (pearl or knit)? For example, if pattern says GSR, P 8, is the pearl right after you slip the first stitch and pull up to make the two stitches count as 1 of the 8? I hope that makes sense. I probably should not be knitting at 11 o clock at night!
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 4 года назад
If you are working from one of my patterns, the GSR and the stitch after it are two different things. Once you complete the GSR, the next stitch listed is the next stitch. If you are working from one of my patterns and you have a question, please email me directly at staci@verypink.com for support.

@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 5 лет назад
Hi Carla - this heel design isn't ideal for using a contrasting color at the heel, since the color will only show up on the back of the heel. (And there really isn't any way to get anything different with this construction.) But it can be done, just knit the "Heel" section in the other color.

Do you have a DK Toe Up gusset pattern? or is there a mod for this one? I just bought this pattern which I will use of the fingering sock yarn I have but looking for a solution to my DK yarn quandary.

@apennyforyourthoughts3710 4 года назад
It's very big, I used the stick size you said and thin sock yarn. How do I go about getting them smaller?
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 4 года назад
You want to match your gauge (stitches per inch) to that listed in the pattern. This pattern calls for 8.5 stitches per inch. If your sock is too big and you are getting fewer than 8.5 stitches per inch, you should use a smaller needle size to get the correct gauge. Then your sock will fit correctly.

Anytime you change direction in your knitting, like knitting a sock heel, there is a chance for gaps. But picking up an extra stitch or two fixes that, I have it all spelled out in the pattern.

Hi Staci, I'm following your pattern and have watched the video a few times. I want to confirm that on the Gusset Increases section of the instructions, where you say the "left" side of the foot, that is actually on the top of the foot, the front of the sock. Is that right? @verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 5 лет назад
I don't recommend contrasting heels...changing color for the heel works better with a sock pattern that does not have a heel flap. (Any short row heel, I have many patterns that use this.) You can, however, use a different color for the toe and ribbed cuff. Just knit the toe section in a different color, that's it. And I give instructions for knitting the ribbed cuff in a different color in the pattern.

Can you do this pattern 2 at a time on magic loop?
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits Год назад
Yes - if you like you knitting socks 2 AAT, you can knit any sock pattern that way. :) I would suggest doing the toes and heels individually, then knitting 2 AAT for the length of the foot and cuff.

Hi Staci, love your tutorials but I HATE DPN's, can this be done on magic loop? Is your pattern written for both?
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 5 лет назад
If you are experienced using magic loop, you can use it. This pattern isn't written for any specific needle type, aside from using magic loop for the toe, then you can switch to your preferred needle, or stick with magic loop.

I personally am very clumsy on dpn's so my question is this: can you knit an entire sock on 9 inch circulars? I would love to try the chiagoo red lace 9 inch needles and one of your beginner patterns
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 5 лет назад
You can knit nearly the whole sock on 9" circulars, but the toe is much easier on a long circular, and I think it might be tough to knit the gusset and heel on 9" circulars. But you can knit the foot and cuff (most of the sock) that way.

I'm currently in process of knitting these toe up gusset socks, TUGS, on Chiagoo 3 , 32" circulars. With no problems.

So confused about where the gusset increases go when on magic loop? Are they on the bottom of the sock or top? I'm working with a pattern on the top of the sock so I'm having a bit of difficulty
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 4 года назад
I recommend contacting the pattern designer for assistance with your pattern. Generally, the gusset increases are on the instep (top) of the sock.

can this be worked on circular needles?
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 5 лет назад
Yes - all of the info is on my website (and in the pattern), after you finish the toe using magic loop (long circular needle), you can stay on magic loop, or switch to any needles you prefer.

Why not place marker one stich before the last stich so you don't have to keep removing and replacing the marker when decreasing the gusset?
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 5 лет назад
You'll have to move it anyway, because you need two stitches to work the decrease, and you keep losing a stitch on each row.
@Jessica-ux1po
@Jessica-ux1po 5 лет назад
@@verypinkknits Yes a stitch is lost... but doesn't the knit 2 tog stitch become the new last heel stitch? Since the number of heel stitches are the same. It would look like: GGH M H M HGG And the next row: GH M H M HG Where M is marker, G gusset st, and H heel st. Not sure if that makes sense or if it'll just mess up the sock

fingering weight with #2 needle to get 8.5 stitches per inch. that seems impossible to me? I get 7 stitches per inch on a #1.

How is a stockinette stitch being made when it’s just all knit stitches and no purl
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 4 года назад
When you're knitting a flat piece, stockinette is made by alternating knit and purl rows. When you're knitting in-the-round (in a tube), stockinette is made by knitting all rounds.

When you get to 20:34 you mention slipping the marker and k2tog, putting the marker back on, but you don’t mention that in your pattern. I have been stuck on this step for months and have started over so many times trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong. This one little comment made all the difference!!!

Sorry you're having trouble - if there is any confusion between the video and the written pattern, please follow the written pattern! That is where you'll find the best instructions. I demonstrate the techniques in the videos, but the pattern has the solid instructions. If you're still having trouble, feel free to email me at staci@verypink.com for pattern support.

@@verypinkknits It was my confusion completely. Once I slipped the marker off, did the k2tog or p2tog as needed the rest just happened as the instructions said. I finished my first sock EVER last night. Thank you for the tutorials and the pattern.
