Melissa, I loved hearing all of the goings on and seeing the yarny things, but I was jaw dropped upon hearing you say that you love making the dolls and toys for your GRANDCHILDREN! I expected you to have little ones at home. 👶👶
hehe, well thank you. There is a slight age difference between Spencer and me and it's his son (my step-son) who has the cute kiddos, so that might explain things.
Well, thanks for the pressure. Now I feel obligated to come up with wit or wisdom or both. Here's my best effort. On the subject of destashing: I did that once. Got rid of over 50 lbs of yarn. It hurt so much, I had to retail therapy myself with a lot of new yarn. On the subject of finding/salvaging: Melissa, admit it. You'd love to find a box of yarn on the side of the road or a by a dumpster- maybe not so much in one - right? On the subject of mansplaining: "Hoard a lot of lousy yarn for your next sweater" is a very man thing to say, but is it really "splaining"? Is it? On the subject of Spence's hoarding: Better to have your husband come home with a prison bus, than taken away in one. On the subject of dangerous textiles: 1. Challenge yourself to survive the arsenic, mercury. etc. 2. Treat yourself to a high quality antidote kit. 3. Know yourself well enough to not do #1. As you can see, I gave up on wit and went for wisdom instead.
hahah. Spencer and I laughed out loud about the prison bus comment. And I'm a little ashamed to admit that Spencer thought your bit about yarn on the side of the road was snort-worthy. I was less amused . . . but still amused all the same. It's hard to deny one's truth.
The American chestnut isn’t entirely blighted out. There are a few left in random pockets in the mountains where I live in East Tn. They are extremely rare though. Roasting chestnuts is good but pealing them is a little tricky.
Love the dolls! I make crochet amigurumi so I share the joy of making toys. My nieces are often the recipients of my creations. Also enjoyed Spencer’s rules for stashing.
I love you guys. Excellent episode. The dolls are wonderful. I thought, wow!… I should make those., I need to add another project to my crazy number of WIPs. But then … I remembered Principle Three. Whew, close call. I really did love this episode. 😊
The dolls would have stole the show if not the charming Spencer. I think it is important to also acknowledge that your taste may change over time. I like rule number 2 the best.
The dolls are precious! Now looking forward to your next sweater. I learn a lot from your inspiration, I am on my second sweater, raglan, everything goes smoothly. I challenge myself with every new 🧶 project a little more, small lace, little cables…. The best of all was Spencers „treat yourself“, he is so right, especially with quality! 🌟
It is so nice to see you! I can’t wait to buy more shorn yarn. It is so beautiful and perfect to knit with 😊. Good luck with the new sweater and planting trees.
The dolls are so cute. Good to see Spencer, the humour is so good to start the day. A good point to ponder, know ourselves and being aware that maybe we don't at times. Happy tree planting,
what's that acronym i heard somewhere recently? SABLE -- stash acquisition beyond life expectancy. since i've been bitten by the nutiden bug, i'm in serious danger of this, as the color ways are all so beautiful, they're all once-and-then-they're-gone, and i just can't knit fast enough. need to do some destashing of yarns i bought before that bug hit...
Melissa, when I was growing up, we had a horse chestnut tree, too. Yes, it was fun to retrieve the nut. And also remember, how beautiful the tree was in blossom. It was a great shade tree, too. This one's for you, Spencer: Cool t-shirt!
Just remember Spencer, the Roman Legions marched on chestnuts, in that pre-potato era. Also, I put in a further tree bid with Melissa for American beech trees- heavily affected by deer browsing in upstate NY. Since I'm in California, I transfer the responsibility for saving the eastern beech forests to you two. Best of luck.
Recently a. non-yarny friend said that she would like to see my "display." I said, "I don't have a display." and she said, "You must have a display." I figured out that she meant my Stash! So, I now have a more genteel,? refined? name for my Stash.
@@knittingthestash Ha Ha! At least if one has guilt about his/her stash supply (Display Supply? It rolls off the tongue, doesn't it?), saying "Display" sort of Disperses the guilt. I am running out of "Dis-es.
How do you handle the jog in Fairisle colorwork? I'm tackling my first stranded colorwork project. Any technique tips, or does the jog not bother you? Thanks to you (and Spencer) for your fabulous cast!
Hi Lyn--we have a thread in the Rav group on colorwork. There are some great designers, such as Rachel Illsley whose charts are planned to avoid this issue. I learned from them . . . there are also plent of videos on RU-vid about slipping stitches, etc. I prefer to build the jog into the pattern, as Rachel does. But sometimes, I just don't care about it (for example with Sven's hat)
Half way through and I cracked up. “Stop hoarding bad yarn for your next sweater.” “Who does that?” and that’s not future potential. That’s a stalker actually. LOL. I am still blown away you are grandparents. Was it hard to have a baby at 15? LOL.
