Apart from the Jared flood and other specific patterns, is there any "rule of thumb" to use as a guide, where this technique would always be beneficial?

between the tubular cast on, these edges and the cast off, I'm using them every chance I get! Well worth the cost of the pattern! And with Melissa's help, we can reach the stars! (in knitting that is)

I'd say anytime you want a very finished, flat edge that won't roll :)
