It is my favorite movie. Watched it 4 times in theaters, i own it and stream it every chance i get, everyday. The trailer did it no justice. So i was completely blown away by the movie. Good mystery, good comedy, good screenplay, smart. Because i am a medical assistant, it actually made me sick to my stomach when i thought she gave the wrong meds. Its every MA's nightmare so i felt so bad for her that i actually teared up when i first watched it What made me also shed a tear was at the end when he explained how she was a good nurse and could tell the difference between the 2 meds and how she had done it 100 times. Not all meds are like this but u can see a difference between Tdap, MMR, prevnar 13, b12, toradol but thats a few compared to all the others we administer to patients. Favorite scenes are when we see what happens to harlan through martas eyes. Then when chris evans arrives and acts like a jerk with his cookies and the will reading. Then the entire end when daniel craig tells the story Favorite quote "what were the overheard words by the nazi child masterbating in the bathroom?" "Sweet beans!!!!" Nana in the window

It has thematic parallels too about how Marta *could* tell the difference between the 2 medicines when they were swapped, and chose the right one in instinctive circumstances. She also chose immediately after Harlan told her Ransom couldn’t tell the difference between knives. It is also a parallel of Ransom’s aggression not being able to outmatch Marta’s peacefulness, which comes up with the Reversi^1 game. 1; The game they played before Harlan’s demise, although not 100% sure it’s Reversi

To Rick's question at 25:45, it would be hard for a prosecution to prove liability since there's evidence that Marta was deceived by Ransom into giving the wrong medication. Aaron begins to make this point. Irregardless of her giving the right medication or doing all the right things, it doesn't matter that Marta facilitated the panic as she was led to believe she gave the wrong medication. It was the deception that caused her and Harlan to panic making Harlan take his own life. Doesn't matter how you slice it, the series of events were caused by Ransom.
@LCDigital92
@LCDigital92 2 года назад
My completely non-legal-professional thoughts. I would have to rewatch the full scene, but it seems like there’s a case for negligence/malpractice. As Harlan’s nurse, she has a duty to make sure she’s giving him the correct medication. Of course she can’t actually tell what clear liquid is inside the bottle, but from what I remember, she gave him the medication from barely looking at the bottle and not checking the label. There may be a professional standard that a responsible nurse should always (at a minimum) check the label of medication they’re giving. Because she just automatically gave the medication without checking that it was the correct bottle (ie reading the label) that caused the mix up, which is that caused Harlan to think he was going to die. If she had read the label beforehand, which may be expected/required of a nurse, then the whole thing wouldn’t have happened. If she had read the label, but the medication had been previously tampered with, then it wasn’t her negligence that was the cause of him getting the wrong medication. However, there may be an issue with having the medication easily accessible where anyone like Ransom could tamper with it. Not sure if a nurse’s standard of care would be similar to like a film prop master’s storing of guns, but an issue with the Rust shooting with Alec Baldwin is that the (prop) guns were not securely stored (among other things) and out in the open. I think you could make a case that she, as a nurse, should make sure that no one has access to Harlan’s medication beside herself. She was negligent in that, which allowed Ransom to mess with the medication, and because she wasn’t responsible in checking what she was giving him, she caused Harlan to believe he had received the wrong medication. Even if she’s not found liable in a civil case, she may lose her license…not that she would have money problems. Although, now there’s the issue if whether or not her negligence would prevent her from inheriting the money. Moral of the story, keep medication in a secure place and make sure you know what you’re giving yourself/others.
@andywilson5234
@andywilson5234 2 года назад
@@LCDigital92 I'm no legal expert, but it seems like any decent defense attorney would be able to argue against negligence because she in fact DIDN't poison Harlan because she was so good at knowing which medication was which that she didn't need to look at the label. The only reason why Harlan killed himself was due to the confusion brought on by Ransom switching the labels and stealing the antidote I don't think that there are any specific decisions that Marta made that a prosecutor can argue was "unreasonable/irresponsible" under the circumstances. If she read the label, she would have given the wrong dose and killed Harlan, but she didn't and is only guilty of having read the label afterwards. By this logic, Marta is only guilty of having read the label. Had she not been responsible, and never read the label at all, Harlan would be just fine.
@LCDigital92
@LCDigital92 2 года назад
@@andywilson5234 Again, I think it largely comes down to professional standards. If it is an acceptable practice for nurses to leave medication out in the open, and if it’s an acceptable practice for nurses to administer medication without checking the label if they’re “so good at knowing which medication” they’re administering, then fine. I don’t know the specifics of nursing standards of practice, but I’m fairly certain that they would be higher than that of a “regular” person. If, for a licensed nurse, her (lack of) actions are not to the (presumably) high level of care required of nurses, then that could constitute negligence and she may be found liable for his death.
@RobinNicoagain
@RobinNicoagain 2 года назад
@@LCDigital92 As a nurse I couldn't resist answering few questions. It would be be very difficult to bring her to court for this. Even though she picked up "wrong vials", technically right medication ended in the patient. True, it is recommended to check the labels and follow the seven step guidelines but the tampering is taking the base from her guilt. As the movie stated she was the bestest nurse that ever bested at her job and she recognized two clear liquids appart from looks alone. (Yes. I had a laugh). At most she would get a reminder of the protocols but since the patient didn't die directly due to medication, she would not lose her licence. The medication storage claim is very weak to begin with since we can only recommend people how to storage their medication. This is residental care afterall so the property is controlled by the person/family compared to a hospital. It is completelly at the will of the patient/next of kin how they store their high toxic medication and I'm very doubfull if barelly any bother to keep the stuff locked away. It's not responsibility of Martha to bring a safe for the medication, it's 100% on Harlem and judging the visual evidence nothing was done about it. Only thing Martha could be reminded of is in the case cool storage medication is found in her baggie but that would be at most a reminder. After noticing her 'mistake' she did follow the protocol correctly but Harlem cut her off from completing it. If prosecutor is making a stand that she misbehaved and caused panic that made Harlem kill himself... just no. 40% of healthcare workers could instantly be sued if they panicked at critical situation if these were the claims. We are all humans and Harlem did what he did at full state of mind. His attorney even confirmed this part. Over all the case against her would be very weak and nursing related governing body would at most give her a reminder and a warning to be more careful in her job.

@Mrryn
@Mrryn 4 года назад
It's a different setup from the usual whodunnit mystery as well. Because, during act 1, we actually see what happens. We "know" about what led to Harlan's death. Which immediately puts us in Marta's shoes and makes us fully empathize with her, both because she has been shown to be kind and genuine (especially compared to the family) and, thus, want her to end up okay and because we are the only ones privy to the "truth" along with her, so we're right along with her on the ride to try to figure shit out. Classic dramatic irony and tension, the old Hitchcockian bomb under the table with the twist being one of the people at the table knows the bomb is there. And instead of the big twists coming when the hows and whats of the murder come to light (like if Harlan had actually staged his death and it was fake all along, for example) instead it really does come down to the who of the whodunnit and the twists turning back to what we thought we knew and it turning out that, unintentionally, it was a suicide as initially pronounced. Such a fun and charming ride from Rian Johnson here. I love the shit out of this movie.

That’s a good point but I can’t lie, I wouldn’t mind seeing him direct a Spider-Man Hobgoblin detective mystery featuring characters like Roderick Kingsley, Ned Leeds, Richard Fisk, Black Cat, Silver Sable, Yuri Watanabe, Daredevil, Punisher, Jessica Jones, and/or Mayor Kingpin. It’d be fun seeing Robert Pattinson doing a role reversal as the cunning sociopath playing either Richard or Kingsley in charge of Roxxon or Alchemax and having a deep hatred for Wilson Fisk. Just have The Tinkerer redesign the Green Goblin’s tech & build up the new goblin over a couple movies. Maybe first tease him when Spidey is wearing the symbiote suit so he absolutely snaps & nearly kills someone like Scorpion.

I think Johnson was just ill suited for an action move he clearly does well with mystery thrillers like this or breaking bad. I know breaking bad has action but that isn’t the purpose of the plot of that series it’s intrigue which Johnson does well. Unlike Star Wars which is more about broad and fantastical conflicts with less subtlety. So I think Rians twists isn’t fit well at least for me in a series that we want to see big hero’s and standard stories in with few changes. That and I think the changes didn’t work even for what he was going for causing the whole trilogy to be thrown into chaos.

To be fair, most fans who complain about that stuff likely doesn’t watch things beyond Star Wars and that genre fandom and probably didn’t even know Rian Johnson’s film pedigree before Star Wars much like they forgot Kathleen Kennedy had a career before she took over Lucasfilm. Rian Johnson’s trademark subversive sensibilities played upon the tropes of the murder mystery aswell as swerving in and out of genres . It starts out as a murder mystery that has a bit of satire , becomes a suspense thriller in which you seem to know what happened but don’t want the killer to be caught but then becomes a murder mystery again by the end . Just so well done ( however , it did drag a bit for me but that’s really it).
