+Mikael Nilsson tried the same test against foam with swords and it has even less effect as the Kevlar is pushed by the blade rather than trying to resist it. If the Kevlar survived on a cutting board it will fair better on a soft surface.

Not sure about that, while a cutting board is too hard for a blade, with foam you're getting too soft. The human body isn't as squishy as foam and can't give way in the same form. Maybe try putting it over a watermelon and performing the same test to look at those results.

Just put it on the ground outside. The ground is soft enough and there’s plenty of surface area so that there’s no side giving in more than another. At least it’s better than a cutting board. And if your worried about getting it dirty, just use sand

I've done that before, makes no difference, the vest always stops everything short of an FS knife.

It was called a gambison and coat of maile. And I mainly protected against slashes rather than stabs or punctures. Something to keep in mind is that he's using a hard backdrop for the test which really kinda voids the accuracy of the tests. Humans aren't solid. There's give to them.

well the swords were pretty heavy back then, they could break your ribs even without penetration (not even mentioning maces). but surely effective against arrows and bolts.

+WeaponCollector Yeah it's really surprised me how well it's stood up against stuff, if I see another one of these for about £30 on ebay again I'll get another, seems very good as survival kit. As Tumbo has said, specialised armour piercing spike weapons will get through it, but your average opponent is going to be carrying specialised bodkin or spiked armour piercers on them.

Both, the chainmail in from of the Kevlar is what prevents most knives from penetrating the vest.

Yeah you wouldn't want to be hit by it, it also depends on the type of blade used, I have a reproduction Fairbairn-Sykes dagger, which is designed purely for stabbing, as all the force is concentrated on a tiny point it can get through most Kevlar.

Kevlar is a lot better 30 years on, and bear in mind the kevlar in the video is modern stab resistant kevlar, not just a plain kevlar panel.

Nah that's sort of a good idea but I don't have a spare tyre, I wonder if there's a good way of actually covering a tyre properly with it though.

Well that's exactly what I'm trying to figure out. I had two tires slashed this past Friday while I was inside a supermarket. I just hope the security cameras caught the piece of shit so the cops can arrest whomever did it and I can be reimbursed for the damages. Two tires mounted and balanced, $320 US. Then add the time it took from two days, the loss of use for that period of time. The aggravation it caused my 92 year old mom and me. The fact that it made a vehicle that is used by a non-profit organization as it's primary rescue unit. And lastly, for the sheer audacity of touching something that doesn't belong to them. Sorry for venting but it just pisses me off to no end.

+Todd P. Well it would have to get into the board first that it didn't manage. Best thing I've found is a foam archery target as it gives a bit of resistance and its easier to tell how far something penetrated if it did get through.

@@glejr990 the wood is stopping the knife from passing through rather than the Kevlar. Put it on a punching dummy and it's likely to go right through.

I'd say that it would actually stretch and make the fabric more "brittle" and susceptible to tearing with the help of a sharp knife, the impact in itself isn't really important, it's the force behind the knife which has to be continuous, unlike, say, a punch where you'd want a lot of impact and no continuous force which would just push the person away, and so you usually want to retract your hand as soon as you have reached your target.

Not much of an advantage as it means the armour can't move backwards and has to take the full force of the blades, I tested a similar thing with foam and nothing got through.
