We remember when you were a little socket and look at you now a full 21mm socket. Congratulations, but now, it’s on to a million subscribers. It’s hell being the boss. 😊
I once changed the power steering rack on my father in laws Buick Century. I did it on the ground with hydraulic jack assist. Took me 5.5 hrs. to do it, a professional mechanic can do it in less than a hour or he's losing money. Of course they have a lift, but still this is a Mother of a job. Raymond makes it look easy.
Thank you Ray for fixing the Rav4 I greatly appreciate the job that you did. It was Fantastic now no more noise and the steering is much tighter now every one is Happy.
Ray, those cotter pins are split pins, here in the UK🇬🇧. Cotter pins are the wedge shaped bolts that fix pedle shanks to pedle cranks on push bikes😉😉👍😊🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
the mounts’ center bolt has to go in first any little twist will keep it from threading through to the fixed nut. great job with the task and video. rubber boots are always such a difficult to get things lined up. it is always easier to take apart then put back together you did a great job setting the tie rod ends length . can not wait for you to have a wheel alignment equipment in house! remember you have a great day!
Ray has done this several times before when he worked at the other shop......🤦🏻♂ If he left the mount loose after beginning the vertical bolts, then inserting the center bolt would've been so much easier. He's not focused on finishing that he looses sight. It happens to so many technicians.
I hope you realize the positive impact you have on many lives. There are a great number of families now that can’t afford new vehicles as of now. Keep on keeping on Rainman!
Another good mechanic-ing video Ray. Now you have Troy helping you, your shop can focus on the interesting things others are probably not prepared to put the necessary time to. It should be future-proof as battery cars sneakily try to displace the ones with real engines from the roads. and people like you know bow to keep them going and going.
New isnt always the same as good. Have a car that original exhaust lasted 13 years, aftermarket lasted 1 year 11 months, then the back muffler fell off due to rust. Insane.
i worked as a mechanic many years ago with no impact tools (air or battery) and no jack stands and not even a floor jack! no air comprssor nothing, only hand tools. you guys have a real shop with every tool you need. that is so much easier than when i was fixing stuff.
Ray, this is the first time I am commenting, I have been watching your videos from the beginning and just love them. I am retired now as 30 year plumbing contractor from O'Fallon Illinois. You will do good on your own. Thanks for the videos 😊
I was working on my 99 Suburban and noticed the clamp for the kill people bolt was stripped. I drilled the thread's out and put a grade 8 bolt through it and used blue thread lock on it. Now it's better than stock.
Must be a common issue. Our 2008 Rav4 has had a steering knock since 150K miles. I replaced the tie rod ends and checked for play in the steering linkage to the rack, it must be the rack, good to see this is pretty easy to do on this vehicle. Thanks for the video!
outer vs inner replacements I'll generally let it slide if the outers were replaced in the last 2-3 years or 30k miles knocking, I had that with a torn column coupling, was the rubber kind, let it go till it got the knock both ways xD
There is stub shaft that attaches to the rack and can be removed from the steering shaft from the inside. Much easier to leave the stub shaft on and drop it with the rack then fighting the boot to get it lined up
It's not just personal preference. A large part of many part's value lies in the labor needed to replace it. So unless the part is immortal or really expensive in it's own right, go ahead and replace it.
You are good man Ray. I am surprised the RAV4 needed a rack so early. The steering on my 25yr old no rust Sienna 168k had a slight click 7yrs ago when I took possession 119k I have held it in check. 1st never change all the fluid in an old R&P The click will be worse and accelerate wear. I removed the power steering fluid from the reservoir, and refilled the tank with Lucas! I added 1/2 bottle of AT205 seal polymer to prevent future seal leaks. It's time to install new PS hoses, before rubber deterioration inside the hoses wrecks my rack.
Adam Savage had either the kill people bolt or something just as important fail once. By that time, he was basically a stunt driver. He managed to turn on emergency lights and siren he happened to have before it stopped moving. Still terrifying. Bet his daughter remembers this vividly.
Great show Ray the zip ties on the steering boot was the only thing I didn't see, I suppose it doesn't matter because they weren't on before. But knowing you they were done.
Nice job Ray, I was just thinking that you should have started all the bolts before tightening and then you loosened them and it all fell into place. Nice to see that you don’t edit certain things out, it shows even you can have something not work out the first time. That’s a great trait that you’re willing to share with us.
Good camera detail about what to do, but, I see more mechanics that don't believe in proper torquing per manufacturer's instructions. Not only that, the sub-frame & cross member assembly is has several bolts to be torqued with the weight of the vehicle on it, per Toyota service manual otherwise premature wear will occur to suspension parts. Can do it with vehicle lowered onto front wheel ramps and just use a creeper for final torquing.
You just made my day Ray! I've been watching your channel for a while now and I finally get to see a RAV4 :D I drive 2006 2.2 diesel one with almost 190k miles and I like doing work on the car and youtube has been indispensable for this. I was always hoping to have something from you for my baby! cheers!
Did you forget the rule of don't tighten fasteners till all are started, like torque converter. Rookie mistakes that we all make. We see Troy (?) working in background on the last couple of videos. Are you letting him work on his own now without video time?
Ah ha !! There it is the fabled comment about the illusive alignment rack. I remember you saying in an earlier video how costly such things were. Great to see the business has gotten to a point where you can entertain such ideas👍👍. Keep up the great work Ray loving the daily uploads. Cheers
Thanks ray as always with you a totally enjoyable video, and loved the ease of replacing the power steering in the Rav 4, Toyota sure know how to think ahead sometimes. Have a superb weekend with your beloved family see you next week and wish troy AKA "The Shadow" an enjoyable one as well. Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘💖💖
Hi Raymond best wishes have a great weekend from Declan in Ireland 👍👍 I quick question for you with all the great comments you do two things I have to ask I love the word gravity ❤️❤️ but in English lingo what is the phrase beautimas trying to picture what the word is cheers Declan 👍👍
Very much enjoy your videos. Amazing camerawork, Well lit, Fantastic Banter. Love it! When a bolt or pin won't go in after a few minutes (i.e. at 24 to 28 min), using a phone camera or boroscope to look into hole / nut to see bolt/pin alignment as you wiggle it is often well and truly worth the effort. The 'don't fully tighten any bolts until all bolts are started' principle (28 min) is a lesson I have to relearn every few years.
A little fight from the motor mount... I forget the term gm used, but certain bolts had a nose on them with threads rolled all the way - they would grab, locate, and self center in situations like this, Clever stuff.
Ive heard this on a car before and i belive it was on a used car dealers lot, or something i was working on i never gave it a second thought. Just turn the stereo up louder it goes away, if its louder then the music its time to fix it. Of if thd car breaks down completely, untill the parts totally dead its still got some use in it. Thats why my audio system plays at 120db spl or more.
I guess my question is who actually diagnosed the the problem? Since the customer seemed like they were supplying the rack ,I still would be skeptical of supplied parts and someone else's diagnosis and be pretty disappointed if the rack was not the right one or problem lay in one of the struts or steering column, just my thoughts.
This gen RAV4 is notorious for having the intermediate steering shaft bind up, causing a knocking noise. I also wonder who originally diagnosed this for the customer.
It’s crazy on newer vehicles you have to almost dismantle a car just to do a simple repair..I like working on my own vehicles just on older vehicles..what’s even more crazy is I could do this kind of work no problem but sense I have a special diploma I can’t get a job at a shop
Hi all. Great video. Many thanks for this hard work. Can you tell us where was the problem, please? Will be nice to know if we can see the problem and not change the entire part.
Ray, I enjoy your videos very much. I like the lightness of your mood, sense of humor and perspectives. I find myself saying out loud at times 'seriously?' when I am working on my own car. And, truthfully, I have learned a lot from you. That being said, has anyone ever told you that you sound like kermit the frog at times?
