Knocking Noise While Braking in 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

See the discussion here: bit.ly/uke0ex Just had new brake pads and rotors installed by the dealer. Now when I brake, I hear a knocking or thudding noise in tune with the wheel motion. Seems to be louder with strong brake pressure, slows down as the wheel slows down, and doesn't appear to happen in reverse. Any idea what this could be?

FIXED! I had the EXACT same problem with new brakes and rotors on my 2005 Jeep Liberty. Front wheel driver's side knocked just like this video. I took the breaks out, the calipers off and removed the caliper bracket and the rotor. I cleaned everything really good, and put new stainless steel, sheet metal brake shims in the caliper seats for the brake pads, and greased up the seats and the clips real good. I also removed what might have been excessive grease on the caliper pins. I cleaned the pins, and lightly greased them, and put them back in. I have not had any brake pad knock since.... This noise is BRAKE PAD MOVEMENT. It is not a suspension issue. It occurs only upon braking, and strangely enough, often after a "brake repair" . I conclude that excessive grease on the caliper pins, and / or dirt in the pad ear shim seats, and worn shims, can cause this problem. The mechanism must move freely but solidly back & forth within the caliper seats on the shims in exacting tolerances, and the caliper pins must not be excessively greasy, or excessively dry. My brakes were Autozone duralast ceramic pads.

Thanks for your video. Because of your video, I know I have the same knocking noise like yours and give me some ideas what went wrong even my mechanic had no clue what was wrong. I just resolved this issue. After my new brake pad change, my car make knocking noise whenever I apply brake and the noise get louder with harder braking. It turns out to be wrong model of brake pad was installed. So if anyone has the same problem, they need to go back to the shop and have them checked. Sometimes the shop order the part through the phone by telling supplier the car's make year and model. They have no idea that supplier send wrong parts to them and same car manufacturer's brake pad do look similar a lot. But every specific pad has custom fit tight to your vehicle. After I get the right pad, the noise is gone.

@cxiong116 The dealer said it was a loose metal backing plate on one of the brake pads. They replaced the pad, and grinded down the rotor a little bit (not sure why, it was brand new). Problem went away for me. There's a discussion on the jeep forum site.

It was a loose metal backing plate on one of the brake pads. The delaer just replaced the brake pad and it was okay.

Air in the break line, loose hub nut, bad break pads, warped rotor, tie rod bushings, caliper mounting bracket, front differential/transmission. Could be alot of things. What I want to know is right before moving across the country in my truck, i replaced everything six months ago. I do all the work Myself as I always do. Pads, rotors, calipers, rebuilt the manual locking hubs flushed break fluid, new rims, new tires, repacked the bearings, had no issues at all! now all the sudden it's below freezing out side and the knocking only happens the first few times i break then goes away.... but those first few times it's violent! 3 or 4 knocks then 6 or 7 knocks then 4 to 6 knocks then nothing everything is right as rain. Until I park and go to drive again. Only on front passenger side. I drive a 1988 k5 chevy. Never had this issue before. Intermittent violent shaking and knocking for about three or four stops then proof! It's quite again. Before I get down on my knees for this girl. yet again.

Grab the tie rods and try to move them by hand. Check the front suspension for any slop. It should be solid. Also check the dust shield behind the brakes, it's a thin metal. Could be rubbing up against the rotor when you hit a bump

Sounds like control arm bushing, broken control arm maybe, or ball joint, or even steering control arm. Notice if turning left it increases it may be the right front as more load stresses are put there.

Just had this happen to me! I had new break pads put on the front of my Nissan and within a few days the noise started. Within a few days the nocking was incredibly loud. The mechanic listened to my recording and immediately said the rotors were warped. He filed the rotors and placed new pads on for free. My guess is they were put on backwards.

from the sky d that it's making it can be one of a few things brother; It can be one or more motor mounts going out (mine makes the same noise and gets worse the faster I go and it's cause I have a few mounts out), your torque convertor bolts loose. really the best thing to do to start out with is have someone start your car while u look under the hood, then have them hold down the brake and put the gear into reverse then have them switch from reverse to drive a few times and see if ur motor moves up and down. if it don't then the joints are good. then u wanna check all the bolts that have anything bolted together and tighten any that are lose. get a good look under the car and look for and spots on parts that look scratched up real bad or bangged up like someone took a little hammer to it. if u can find that then u can narrow down ur cause. the tappin is coming from somewhere so it can't be to hard to locate. and also I doubt it's a CV boot because that noise would be constant forward and reverse and would have started out as constant clunking noise when the wheel was turned and there would be grease splashed under the car. usually found on the inside of rim behind the tire. good luck and hope this helps.

I have the same exact problem with my car. the sound was coming from the right side of my wheels. I thought it was a bad axle at first. I replaced it and found out that my old axle was bad anyways. then the sound just got louder. it doesnt happen in reverse, same thing. i had my car jacked up and let the wheels run, and it sounds like its coming from the center, which is the transmission. But wat in the transmission will knock other than a bad differential? And it wouldnt make sense if........

Had the same but very loud knocking noise in a '06 Town&Country while breaking reviewed by 4 different mechanics. Had the pistons replaced, rotors machined (twice), wheel hub/bearings replaced, suspension checked, and nothing. After looking to below comments the only thing pending to change were the brake pads that hadn't been replaced because they were just 3 weeks old!, so got the brake pads replaced and voila! The bad brake pads (FreeStar semi-metallic) look alike to the new ones so maybe a small defect in size was causing knocking against the calipers.

SO I HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH MY 99 JEEP GR. CHEROKEE AND AFTER INSPECTION I HAD FOUND OUT IT WAS NOT THE SILENCER PLATE WHICH WAS RIVETED SECURELY TO THE PAD. RATHER IT WAS THE BRACKET THAT THE CALIPER MOUNTS TO (CALIPER MOUNTING BRACKET) AND I REPLACED THE SPRING AS WELL. THE SPING IS THE HARDWARE THAT LOOKS LIKE A LONG CURVEY PIECE OF COAT HANGER. THE BRACKET IS 16.99 AND THE HARDWARE IS 5.99 AT ORIELLYS AUTO. THE BRACKET HAS A CORE OF 10 BUCKS. I HOPE THIS HELPS U

youtube my car does this same noise but not as a heavy noise as this. but it does a clicking noise.. I was kinda thinking if it could be a motor mount that's failing.. cause I actually could move my car a little to listen for the noise and it sounds like its the back motor mount that sits in the very bottom.. but I was wondering do motor mounts actually make clicking noises when either braking or accelerating???

I have the same problem on the rear passenger side...I took the brakes appart n found dat where you lay the brake pads wore down it made a groove into the and from I replaced them with a RE-MANUFACTURED (they just fill it in with some kind of sotter thing and grind it down to make it look good) set it went away for like 2 3 days then it came back I replaced them again and still came back....I don't even know if the dealer makes new brake calipers but I have to look into it

I literally just went through this problem with my 1998 ford escort. Took me over 2 months of solving and finally just found out it was my break pads. And my pads were only 6-8 months old. I actually ended up sanding down the pads just a little "re-surfacing" it a bit is all I did. Anyways it's gone now!!
@m12ptx
@m12ptx 8 лет назад
Steven Ross hi were your rotars damaged at all or need any work on them? I am experiencing problems as the video with my Lexus
@imdeadsexy100
@imdeadsexy100 8 лет назад
Yes. I hit a curb with my front left. And my rotor was damaged. There was a small little Nick in the rotor. I ended up resurfacing it and making sure it was true. But at the end, I actually just ended up buying a new pads and rotors. Reason is because somehow the noise did come back. But my rotors have been resurfaced about three times which is not very good. So that's why I believe the sound came back. If your rotors haven't been turned that often then you're probably good to just resurface the rotors and get new pads. If not I would recommend getting new rotors and pads and it should be gone. And I would make sure that your calipers are good also.

I have a brand new car that is less than a month old (Vauxhall Corsa 2016) and it's making this noise when I brake. The harder I break as I come to a stop the louder it gets. I assume this isn't normal then? That's the consensus right?

casey heck Yes. Even though my car was brand new there was an issue with the rear drive shaft. Apparently if they sit in the showroom for long enough they stiffen up and it had cracked slightly causing this knocking sound. They just replaced it immediately under warranty.

@russellleek8605

almost sounds like you got either a shock or a strut going bad if it hasn't already. if not that check your ball joints on your control arm. where the arm connects to the spindle. there's a rubber boot that holds grease and there known to bust from road particals or popping if no grease is routinely put in the joint for proper function. that would be my best bet is one of your ball joint boots are popped. check each one really good and hook a grease gun up to them and pump grease in real slow. if u see the grease start to ooze out of the rubber joint somewhere then it's no good. it's not compleatly destroid or a hazard yet so if u want it to last about 4-5 months longer then just get some sort of black sealent and coat the whole rubber boot in a rubber sealent and then wrap it with some bonding electric tape. also u can check the Cadillac converter and the exhaust, there none to go out in that area of the exaust system and cause random knocking noises. hope this helps buddy. if u don't figured it out though what was it?
