A knot is more or less what you think it is-a tangled mess of string in ordinary three-dimensional space. In the twentieth century, mathematicians developed a rich and deep theory of knots. And surprisingly, as Edward Witten, Charles Simonyi Professor in the School of Natural Sciences, explains in this lecture, it turned out that many of the most interesting ideas about knots have their roots in quantum physics.

This man is unimpeachably brilliant. I really have to stand in awe at this display of intellect.

Brilliant! Wonderful lecture! Gives an insight into the kind of work Witten does on a day to day basis.

Path is not an object but the wave of partiles ,the objects in quantum mechanics..Elegant introduction to the link between mathematics and qualtum physics..

I think he reads the slides word for word to stay focused when talking on our level......Scary Smart.....A True Treasure Of This World!

Applied science wouldn't get very far without pure science. Maxwell didn't set out to invent radio or telegraphy, nor did he. But without his theoretical work in electromagnetism (which wasn't of much interest to the general public at the time) those technologies would have been greatly delayed or might never have existed. We don't know what practical applications Ed Witten's work might have in the future, but it's unlikely that it would have none. This matters.

Pretty sure your definition makes ALL of math into Mathematical Philosophy. Aside from that, the breakthroughs in pure math due to Ed Witten are so valuable that even if string theory is completely false(unlikely) his work will have been monumental.

I have always thought this too, with ALL the theoretical physicists and chemists out there.

Agreed, seems to be that the largest problem with clean energy lies in economics not physics, the best of ideas will still be shutdown until they can be monetised.

A quantum path of a particle could go through any place in the universe.

reading the slides word for word is so elementary, but nevertheless, a powerful mind.

Interesting video! This is an invitation to see an artist theory on the physics of light and time! This theory is based on two postulates 1. Is that the quantum wave particle function Ψ represents the forward passage of time ∆E ∆t ≥ h/2π itself 2. Is that Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle ∆×∆p×≥h/4π that is formed by the w- function is the same uncertainty we have with any future event that we can interact with turning the possible into the actual!

how many universities in india would allow some one with a degree in history to do master in maths and phd in physics? It took a mathematical genius gh hardy to recognise ramanujan's brilliance who failed to get a degree in india ? I learned as a maths prize winner at the top school in my country with a book of a course of pure mathematics by gh hardy in my pre university days which introduced me to ramanujan's work..

What a shame..The grandmaster gives a public lecture and it s watched by only 2700 people. More surprising than the quantum world itself.

very interesting and so theoretical that I'd like to offer an idea my self: we are used to talking in 4 dimensions "I was there but I'm not there now". but maybe we could be talking 4 but meaning 11 "I was there, thinking this, feeling that, weighing this, facing that way, related to the now moved on x, in relationship to, slightly younger, constituting of..." ...I'll shut up now :-)
