With 100 years of history it’s the perfect time to get a visitors perspective in this special Documentary length Randomland episode featuring never before seen footage, along with archival images and a lifetime of learning about our neighbor, Knott’s Berry Farm.
From Walter Knott’s Boysenberries and Cordelia’s Chicken to Volcanos and Ghost Towns, this farm grew organic, pesticide free attractions that came from the imagination and the hearts of the amazing individuals who came to Walter’s farm and were allowed to set up shop.
It’s the Golden Age of Knott’s Berry Farm from 1940-1970, and we have a lot to see! Boot Hill, Sad Eyed Joe, the little Chapel by the Lake with the big Surprise! Panning for gold, the Indian Village on an island started by trash... not to mention exploring the depths of the original Calico Mine Ride!! Come ride a model T and feed fish to the... well, you’ll see! Get ready for a day ranging from the goats of Old MacDonalds farm to Rose Gardens to Volcanic devils! Strap yourself in for an adventure!
The bulk of the film is never before seen footage from the Randomland collection, but as the video grew larger, more and more archival footage was used as well.

This is phenomenal. I love learning about Knott's Berry Farm. Actually, when everything shut down, everyone was like "not Disneyland!..." and trust me, while I am sad that Disneyland is closed (and I completely understand why) I was actually shouting, "NOT KNOTT'S!" because of the 100th anniversary. It's really a shame. A once-in-a-lifetime milestone, and who knows when it will reopen. Speaking of once-in-a-lifetime milestones, my cousin was actually set to get MARRIED at Knott's in May, but of course, that's very unlikely to happen now. Hoepfully soon though, we'll get to see Knott's open up again, we'll get to see my cousin get married,and we'll all get to celebrating milestones! Happy 100th, Knott's. If nothing else, at least be happy you get to take some time off from giving all of us a great time in the OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLDDDDDD WWWEEEEEESSSSSSSSTTTT!!!

The best documentary of Knott's out there, and definitely in a class of it's own, Justin Scarred owned it on this short film. It's untouchable. I feel like I've been waiting all of my life for this experience; A complete immersion into the early days of the farm and park. There's nothing else like it. Absolutely phenomenal. I give it 10 out of 10 Boysenberries. This is history in the making. And thank you, Ally, not only for your contribution as "Volunteer" and "Extra Cameras" but also the sacrific and all your contributions behind the scenes. Thank you guys so much.

I spent many a weekend at Knott's in the early sixties. Dad would go to the shops in ghost town. Usually the knife shop. He would give us a few dollars and we would ride the Calico Mine Train and of course the full size train while he "shopped". No admission fee back then. It was a great place to kill a few hours in the summertime.

I visited knotts berry farm a lot in the 60s. My wife grew up across the street from the farm. She even has a cat buried by independence hall. Thanks for bringing back so many fond memories.

dude..this is by far the best history of Knott's. Thank you for putting in your time and effort to document this I remember Knott's from the late 60's where that area was all Orange field. Some of your video brought back good memories. My last visit to Knotts was in the mid 80's when I moved to Oregon. I often wonder if the place you visited outside Salem "Enchanted Forest" was inspired by Knotts? Those train robberies I do remember and it was here I first learn about putting pennies on the train track and watch them flatten out. Not sure when Haunted Knotts came out but my 1st trip to that was in the 80's and it was a boatload of fun. I miss their chicken and stage coach ride as well the train. Although I been back to calif several times my family has no interests to visit Knotts. Well...next trip they will go.

WOW! I remember panning for gold, I remember the big dogs, and we would go there and watch them make the candy right near those big dogs (which of COURSE we have many pictures of my sisters and me sitting on them!). My dad filmed us panning for gold and I could SWEAR you can see the guy helping us pan dipped into a little bag and brought out the gold he then dropped into the pan which then went into a tiny little vial. I kept it forever (though I've since moved so many times since I have no idea where it is anymore). It was a tiny bit of gold, but the vial had the gold, the water, and a Knott's label on it. Oooh, that leg out the window SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF US when we were little kids! I mean it REALLY scared us! We were little kids and we had no idea what it was about...now I think its funny. :) We lived in Pasadena and would drive down to Knott's because it had a big free area for families to enjoy including a picnic area. Despite my dad working really hard as an aerospace engineer for NASA, for some reason we just didn't have a lot of money. But that's okay, because I wouldn't trade those memories of my family and of Knott's for anything!

When I lived in southern California in elementary school 1960s I went to either Knott's Berry Farm or the Long Beach seaside every weekend. Throw in a trip or two to Disneyland every few months. On weekdays played tennis, went to school, ate oranges off the tree in our yard. It was an idealistic life for sure.

Off the charts! You can tell you spend so much time researching for your videos. They also have great production value. Let me tell you, I was born and raised in Buena Park. I have been going to Knotts since the 70’s when my parents use to take me, usually once every Summer. It was a real treat. Later in life I became a KBF employee in the late 80’s thru the early 90’s. These were the days the Knotts family was still running the show and I would occasionally see one of the kids walking around...usually Marion or Virginia. Great memories! Present day my wife and I are Season Pass holders and we like to enjoy the park whenever we have some free time. You are a great historian and it’s one of the reasons i like to watch your videos. These Knotts and Disney videos bring back so many memories! Keep up the amazing work!

I agree! I was born and raised in Orange County and our family preferred Knott's. The Old West history that Walter Knott incorporated into his farm made it so interesting. I still buy a pass every year and now my grown children have passes and take their little ones to experience the 1881 train ride, the stagecoach ride, and all the fun at Camp Snoopy! We always buy the boysenberry turnovers, too!

Loved seeing this! I have a few pics of my mom on the ‘bucking bronco’ when photos were 10 cents. Btw. My husband and I visited Knott’s a couple years ago just when you were coming to tour the inside of the steam train. My nephew walked us through and told us they were instructed to make the interior of that train immaculate for your visit. You’re kind of a big deal there it seems :)

When I was a kid, we had annual passes to Disneyland. I liked Knot's Berry Farm more because we went so rarely, where as we went to Disneyland at least weekly.

My family and I loved Knott's. We have since moved to Nashville, TN where the closest park like this is Dollywood, three hours away. It's very much in the knott's vein, but to just take random out-of -the-blue trips to is next to impossible. Unlike living in the San Fernando Valley and just driving an hour and spending the day there. Knott's became our go-to park just because it was less expensive and easier to handle than the "other park". We went back in 2021 for what will be our last visit for awhile. Your videos are like watching a piece of home. Thank you!

I'm so glad they upgraded the animatronics in Calico Mine. A lot of them seemingly stopped working or were disabled. It was my favorite ride as a kid. Best part of Calico Mine is tossing pennies into the water outside or watching the little stream carry falling leaves down the line.

I grew up just fifteen minutes drive from The Farm way, way before all the newfangled glitzy rides. We'd go on special occasions into the main park, a few times across the road to see Independance Hall and the lagoon (I was enchanted by the mysterious log creatures and birds.) Best place even after The Roaring Twenties came in was still Ghost Town and the shops. Never cared for The Spanish Village, but Ghost Town? I could have lived there. Loved all the little things like the devil working the volcano, the guy behind the door, the geology mineshaft, the lifesized diaroma that was the backside of the open-air theater, the graves (one that shook and one where you could feel the 'heartbeat'. Knott's was on par with Disneyland.

The biscuits are wonderful and they still use Cordelia Knott's recipe. We always buy a dozen or two to take home, plus Snoopy sugar cookies for the grandkids and my son, and boysenberry turnovers for my DIL and me!

My mom used to take my sister and I to Knotts or disneyland every other easter. We would drive out the day before and it was a 300 mile drive from Modesto. Her and my grandma would put our baskets together so when me and my sister woke up in the motel the next morning, we would have chocolate bunnies for breakfast then go to Knotts. I miss those special trips so much.

Thanks for the great video. You could see the parachute ride from my aunt's front door. My mom and I would visit her every summer while I was growing up. From the late 60's through the early 80's I went to Knott's Berry Farm every year. It was cool to see the history of the place. I had no idea that it went back so far. Thanks again.

My dad went to college in LA in the early 50s. He was nearly 60 when I was born (my parents were 30yrs apart). Whenever we found ourselves in Cali, visiting family, we always went to Knott's & Santa Cruz boardwalk. Thanks for helping bring back childhood memories 😊

Dad used to drive my brother and me out to Knott’s at least once a month for those Chicken Dinners... and we rarely ventured into the Ghost Town... Good Times! (I see 40 people didn’t have a good time... must been taken away by the Under Taker.. )

I loved this Justin. I'm all the way on the other side of the country these days. I real miss living in Orange County, CA. I met Walter Knott when I was a kid. He gave me a sucker. My mother and him shared similar views on politics and had been working together to get a conservative governor elected. Yeah, once California was a conservative state.

Cedar Fair has destroyed much of the original, Knott's family history at the farm and transformed classics like 'The Hanging Of The Witch' at Halloween season into a political, dirty and suggestive event that keeps many long-time pass holders away from the park. (You'll notice I refer to Knott's as the FARM when the Knott family operated it and a PARK when Cedar Fair now that they mis-manage it). It's a shame to see remnants of the farm being replaced by 'modern' attractions that have no long-lasting value and couldn't hold a memory in a jelly jar. Thanks for sharing the FARM with everyone, Justin. Incredible job, as always!

I grew up in South Los Angeles, so Knott's and Disney were a staple in my family. I was born in '64 and we frequented Knott's from a young, tender age of 8. Maybe even younger. At that time, Knott's was considered the nostalgic amusement park while Disney was, well, Disney. Universal Studio's tour was also part of the group with a smattering of lesser-than parks and places of interest. I always had a great time at Knott's but don't remember the fried-chicken dinner. Pity as it seemed it was very popular, which means it was very tasty and chickeny. However, I remember panning for gold. Also, I remember how many years later some of the original rides made way for newer rides. The two-person horse racing, parachute-drop, and much more. Lots of fun memories. Yes, even the donkey rides. Good days long gone.

This is great footage of Knotts berry farm. I grew up in the 70’s & 80’s. Spent lots of weekends at Knotts. As a teenager dancing the night away at Cloud 9. I still like the chicken dinner and always have boysenberry jam in my fridge. Thanks for sharing and bringing back so many awesome memories!

I love these documentary-style videos - great job!!! For Knott’s videos I’m always keeping an eye on the people in the videos hoping to see one of my family members walk by as they started going in about 1954. I remember quite a bit of the old school attractions (like Seal Pool and Haunted Shack) and it is so good to see them again! And by the way, is that possibly a young Justin appearing twice in this video around the 42.35 minute mark? Or is it my imagination, hmmm? 🤔

My grandma and grandpa rode this Denver Rio Grande train in Colorado on their honeymoon, Grandma said. Perhaps my grandpa and his brothers were on the way to “gigs” playing chamber music in mining towns, which is how their made a living. I wish I would have asked. My mom, grandma and I rode this train together at Knott’s Berry Farm, and I took my children decades later. Such a sweet memories.

Good Job on this Justin, I was there too. Married a couple gals there. I think they both still have the nail rings. I begged my parents to let me drive the model T's that were on the corner. This really brought back many many memories Thanks
