I'm in my 50s & have been wanting to learn how to sew so badly since my 20s that I have so much fabric that I've collected over the years of wanting to learn. My mom had bought a brand new baby lock before the pandemic but every time she tried to use it, got intimidated & went back to her 50 yr old Singer. LOL! So during lockdown, I used the manual & RU-vid to help me master making bobbins & threading her new machine. It's my machine now! But I did just like you said- I live in a small studio apartment but set up on my 1 table. When I need to put it away, it fits perfectly hidden away in my doggy steps. It was meant to be.

I don't think a complete beginner would really know how good a machine feels for them? My recommendation in UK is Brother LS14. It's a fabulous machine for a beginner, I'm intermediate but it's one of my favourites. I have 5 which is kind of crazy but I love them all. ❤️ Thanks for a great video.

My favourite sewing machine is a Pfaff 1472, i bought it off ebay and the machine is 45 years old. It is my go to for all sewing projects. I did get a Janome quilting machine as it has a big throat space for free motion quilting. My worst was a Singer, it used plastic discs to do decorative sewing. I swear that machine hated me! The gal i gave the machine to absolutely loved it, she never had any issues. Thanks for the tips!

Jan, your tips are spot on. I would add to your list: thanks to gifted teachers such as yourself and many others, anything you want/need to learn is readily available on RU-vid. I think that NOT understanding (1) needles (type and size) and correct pairing with thread, use and fabric and/or (2) basic machine threading/operation are two of the basic struggles that many experience with "tension" or stitch quality issues. Schmetz has some great online info for the anatomy of a needle. Not to quibble but... a Microtex needle works beautifully on cotton fabrics. In fact, I (and many others) do my quilt piecing exclusively with a Microtex needle.

Oh Jan, how I wish we were neighbors! Lol! I am a completely self taught sewer and become easily overwhelmed so when I read my sewing machine book, I end up more confused. I still know nothing about changing sewing feet, needles & stitches so I end up always using the same. My mother was a sewer and passed away before I began sewing and oh, how I wish she was here for me to ask my 100’s of questions. I appreciate your videos more than you can imagine. Sincerely ❤

I've been sewing on and off for about 50 years, really buckled down to it in the last 5 years and am excited to find another up-cycler. I'm hoping to work on all thrifted and up-cycled sourced products to sell at the Farmer's Market next summer and you're a woman after my own heart. The only tip missing for a beginner is to have an iron and use it throughout your projects. Subscribed and looking forward to diving in.

As a home dec sewer for many years, I have one simple suggestion to avoid costly and time consuming mistakes. Never attempt to rush through finishing a project if you’re tired or working late at night in a poorly lit room. I have inevitably woken up the next morning to discover mistakes that were totally avoidable 😢

What’s the purpose of a serger and why do you need it.
@JanHowell
@JanHowell Год назад
Sergers finish the fabric edges and sew a seam at the same time so they don't fray. They are not a necessity but very useful.

Are you using scissors or a rotary cutter? If you arn't using a rotary cutter, they can be real helpful in making straight cuts.

I’m surprised you are using Dual Duty thread rather than one of the smoother, better European type threads. If you look at the thread under a magnifying lens to see how fuzzy and rough it is. If I am having trouble with breaking thread or bad stitches I find the dual duty is very often the reason. I very rarely use it only if I’m desperate for a certain color.
