Thanks for watching! Here's my quick guide & formula for figuring out EXACTLY how much to plant in your garden this year---> theprairiehomestead.com/whattoplant
Well, I'm planting my seeds this weekend. I'm not trying to feed my family for the whole year, just to try my hands in the garden for another year (as compared to a spur of the moment last year). I'm a whole lot more educated and prepared than last year. I'm not a head of house, breadwinner, or homemaker; I'm a 17, soon to be 18, year old guy who wants to garden. I would love to lead a self-sufficient life and it seems homesteading is just that. You and the many other wholesome homesteaders are a great encouragement that this dream can become a reality. 👍🏼, Keep up the good work!
Where I used to miss was not harvesting the produce in time, allowing it to go off. Then I bartered harvesting help with a neighbor which gave us enough for me to put up, food for their use, and extra for the coop. They only go bad if not picked. It is important for us to plant soon enough to get harvest before summer heat causes damage or bugs.
My tomato math factors in birds. I now plant extra of everything to share with garden critters, family & friends. Love your videos so much. A big G'DAY from Australia 😁
I planted some basil in large pots last year and put them next to my broccoli (not on purpose). I saw two broccoli worms the entire season! (We’re in Utah.)
Love your logic and attitude, I can't walk to good but I'm planting tomatoes in a pot this year on my patio, I'm 71 Jill and you inspire me. I can't do canning but I love fresh home grown tomatoes. Thank you!
All those years in making mud pies as a little kid finally pays off in learning about soil consistency so you can make soil blocks! 😂😆 Got my block maker on order but who knows if I’ll get it in time fir the start of our season.
185 plants have been started in our apartment in the last two weeks. Excluding the stuff that will go directly into the soil. We'll see if it's going to be enough.
That soil block maker is so great! I need to invest in one. Last year I used toliet paper rolls and potting soil to get my seeds started 😂 we were in a pinch and it worked 😏
I've not tried dehydrating carrots. Love drying tomatoes and various fruits. It would certainly save freezer space. Do you clean, slice, blanch, then dry? How do you store them after drying? Thanks
@@arlenebowyer5447 I scrub the carrots, slice thin and place them on my dehydrator. I think it took 24 hours to dry to the point I could put them into zip lock vacuum bags. About 1/4 cup is good for a large pot of soup.
Jus spoke to my wife about how to figure out how much food for me her and my daughter and that we need to prepare and wow here this goes.. God bless :)
I just found the channel and love the content. You mentioned corn being a space hog. Have you tried using the square foot method? I planted popcorn a few years ago (zone 4) and planted 2 seeds per square foot. My reward for a 15x15 was 17 pounds
Oh My Goodness! That was SO helpful. Thank you Jill. 🥰. It’s so hard for me to know where to start, how much to grow, how much room I need, ugh I could go on. This is exactly what I needed.
That's how my dad used to store his. I just leave mine in the ground and pile FAll leaves over the top for a Winter blanket and go dig some up when I want them. Works unless you have voles helping themselves.
@@shelliecummins5972 Depends on how cold it gets. I'm in zone 6b and water will start to freeze in my uninsulated unattached garage which by mid-December will be too cold for use as a root cellar. I have to do something with any onions, winter squash, beets I still have out there by then or they will freeze, thaw and rot. If you can leave a 5 gallon bucket of water in your garage and it doesn't ever freeze then it might work.
Love your Videos. I always say to my mom the one thing I want is a garden when we move. One thing I want to do with my garden is share with family and friends.
3:00 - so true. Grow something. Start. Great useful video and the maths was not too hard for me haha. I just sort of plant lots and hope. We have lots of birds and my kids always eat berries and peas straight off the plant before they even get to the kitchen so there is no equation for that (but the joy is priceless)
Thank you for sharing. I also watched your video on the chicken and chicks. You have such a wealth of knowledge of putting it together for quantity for meals. Thank you.
Awesome video for us first timers venturing into the backyard to try to grow enough to can up for the family! Thank you so much for the time you put into this, Jill, and the inspiration you give! ❤️🙏🏼
I plan on planting way more than I expect to use, and I will can it up or dehydrate what I can. I will also freeze some, but trying to save freezer space for meats and thinks I cannot grow that we use. I just got my green house set up on Friday.
I have a somewhat similar formula: How many onions do i use/ week How many potatoes/wk How many crops of lettuce/wk Anyway you catch my drift.... Ofcourse i am close to a store...i can always get something if i am short. I dont aim to be totally selfsufficient....just for some things And ofcourse i plant a bit extra
I learned the hard way that soil blocks should not be made ahead of time. I called the company to see what I was doing wrong. Using a more wet soil mix makes them crusted and hard. I like e the idea of the soul blocks, but the 1st yr I tried it it just didn’t go well.
OMG thank you Soooooo much for doing this!!! this is a massive help. im going into my 1st real attempt at gardening and the info i found what overwhelming. i did your math and already have tips for next years layout, especially with some good ol tomato math :) im in zone 3 so its hard to have such a short grow season and produce enough to feed my boyfriend and i. this year will be a good testament to what i can learn for next year
Have you thought about using agrabond cloth over your cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower? This will keep most of the bugs out, you get the sun, and rain with no problem.
Great video! This is my second season planting so I'm still getting my feet wet on what to plant when and how much to plant. And how to avoid the bugs.. Vine borers got me last year for my squash and zucchini so I have my fingers crossed this year. At any rate.. good info thanks!
love your vids u little winger !!! God bless ya girl for trying to help the people may God bless u always ! Plant lots Of plants , u can help other people with all the food u grow ! Darn racoon kills my sweet corn lest the a week before it was ready to pick Grrr , I planted 1200 corn seeds they eat it all in 5 days lol Just give it to people,, God will bless ya !
We have a had a backyard garden for years (at two different houses) and NOTHING ever grows.... This year I plan to test the soil and hope that fixes the issue, but I just don't know what I'm doing wrong. :/ There have been a few little things I can point out that hindered our growth like a groundhog neighbor, but it seems things just grow slowly and dont ever mature... One of our human neighbors had the same issue this last summer
Try Chinese broccoli (aka Chinese kale aka yod fah) as a better broccoli to grow! I'm in zone 4b, they do better with the heat so I can grow it in the summer and not deal with the spring pest pressure. Yay!
Help first time gardener and I don’t know what to buy to get traditional green beans, what are they called when you purchase seeds bush beans, string beans, Pole beans?
Our plan is to try & eat only seasonal foods. I know, crazy hard, but go big or go home right!? Anywho, I do plan to get a freeze dryer. I'm not a fan of canning. Do you have any thoughts on this plan and/or freeze drying?
Where did you get your greenhouse? I grew up in Boulder and went to CSU for equine. Curious about your jacket, it looks like you won it in a horse event?
Brilliant use of the strawbales at the end of the greenhouse... I think straw bales are under-used in life. Insulation, windbreak...what CANT they do? Lol
Forcing your friends to take cucumbers lmao. That's like zucchini up here because it's one of the few squash we can grow up here, so of course EVERYBODY grows too many 😂
im gonna save the space to raise beef instead of garden. we just don't eat anything but tomatoes and we have no chance of being vegetarians or anything near it. chickens and a cow for our homestead.
