That's how I have been shown how to tie our launches at work except I always wrap round the pile then round the cleat on the boat then do about 3 clove hitches

The best thing to do when you arrive at a marina with no cleats at the dock is to find a new marina.

Definitely put your line at the bottom of the post it puts less strain on it. I would only use a Clove hitch for a small boat but even that can allways slip. I would do two & half turns and half hitch or if on a yacht do a Bowling knot just to be safe.

Way to slow a method and frankly dangerous to put your fingers or hands in any knot when tying up a boat Much better to use right over left.. ringht over left snap tight method

@@boatus Thanks, I was trying to show my grandson how to tie a clove hitch and I came upon your video. I was a BoatUS member for many, many years. Insurance, Towing and even financing two boats . Great outfit, and I miss boating immensely . Take care

That is not a secure knot. I wouldn't tie anything with that.

I agree! So many better choices. And it can be quite difficult to untie. I was taught to always end with a half hitch when using a clove hitch. Maybe that's her next video?

The clove hitch is NOT a proper way to secure a vessel to a piling,,,,as a UNLIMITED TONNAGE CAPT of 38 yrs ...learn how to tie a line such as a bowline or a river hitch to start. Buy a book of knots....
