One other point is that staff also creates tokens for a second staff. You went from 11 token producers to 14 with post league changes, which could matter for the draw effect. It's a reason to play four
Sad to see Standstill not performing well, but not surprised, given that a lot of the factors making it look bad haven’t changed since your last Hornstill video. 😢
11:20 I honestly think that the plan of removing the vial is not current anymore. With 2 cards in hand of villain, I guess you must remove a 2/2 because you know you're losing this game with what is coming next. Removing the 2/2 saves you 4 to 6 life for sure while removing the vial will not help you win if I'm not mistaken (based on the cards on top of your deck + the deck your facing + the board texture) It happens to me a lot when I'm waiting to draw a card in order to do something, I'm like HEY :D boom! forgetting about how the game developed and the new options. (This is valid if you think there was a play there of course 0:-) )
Something I've wanted to see tried in these UW or RUW standstill decks is 1-2 copies of Sun Titan at the top end. It may be 6 mana, but these games can go long and it recurs a lot of the key pieces of your deck. Converter, statdstill, staff, Narset, wasteland, and fetchs are all able to be brought back by the titan meaning it gives you value the moment it enters even if it doesn't stick around. A casual combo I've seen with Titan-standstill in the past (a friend had the deck and I think called it "SunStill" or something) was he ran a set of Phantasmal image. He could copy our best creatures for 2 mana or he could chain-reanimate every copy of Image he had in his graveyard with a Titan by copying the Titan and having the new one bring back another Image.
i play a version of this on legacy and honestly that feels like it would just be a win-more card. i can see it if it is the only win-con along with shark typhoon but it feels too slow compared to other options IMO. for reference i play a weirder brew that runs Urza's Saga and some more artifacts for my finishers as another way under standstill and that just seems strictly faster and more powerful at making a dense board than going that big (while also adding tokens for staff)
Love your content always; this was no exception. I don’t disagree with your plan of trying this without standstill, however I think you’re too quickly dismissing standstill as a separate archetype. Looking back at these games, currency converter felt extremely suboptimal, and the masks didn’t do much. I would love to see your take on standstill without those. More verdicts is a must to catch back up against creature decks. Also I think counterspell is not a good legacy card currently. Dovins veto has been surprisingly good in that slot for me. The most important targets are noncreature anyway, and it allows you to present a post board plan against red blast decks that mostly ignores their countermagic. Please keep the island ponder content coming!
Wouldn't have kept a 1 lander against that black prison Deck. And sadly counterspell is just not a good enough card anymore. Still thanks for uploading great content so frequently! I'm also trying out staff but without standstill and sfm, not yet sure if it's just cute or gonna stay. It's fun and new for sure 😁
13:00 If you had brainstormed differently, you could have had Narset in hand instead of Staff. At that point, you would have been able to Plow a creature then cast Standstill. Force Of Will their trickster pitching Narset. Then, assuming that the opponent doesn't have Daze, and doesn't pop your Standstill, you could buy a turn by chump blocking with a 1/1 shark typhoon. Then, as soon as you draw a white land, you stabilize with Timeless Dragon.
I wonder if the new MOM shark eill finally allow the things that I wish Hardcast Shark Typhoon was used for. Probably in less powerful formats and not Legacy tho 33:32 What a fun inclusion!
The league really sucked but it's always a lot of fun watching you play Sharkstill. I guess it's time to cut Standstill, I look forward to whatever you name the deck without Standstill.
Seeing these UW decks get murdered by creatures like Merfolks and Ninjas makes me want to play Humility. And Counterspell over Force of Negation is just sad lol
Dont think so, you already play a lot of manasinks, saga would just be a tutor or/and occasional 2/2. You could probably switch the one of wasteland for a saga though
You conclusion that Standstill ist just not a great card anymore reminds me of the time in 2010 when people started to cut Standstill from Landstill because they thought it wasn't a good card anymore. Maybe you're right but I notice the same thing now that I noticed back then: people were cutting all the cards that made Standstill good. Back then, Landstill would run a combination of like three to four manlands, Wasteland or Dust Bowl, Decree of Justice. I see that especially without Humility (which a lot of Landstill decks played), Shark Typhoon is a strict upgrade but do you think that maybe cutting manlands and only one Wasteland may be the wrong choice? I really liked that back then Landstill could just drop Standstill on turn two because we knew our deck would be able to operate so much better than the opponent's.
Hey, excited for the video, but is something going on with your video quality? I have 1080p selected, but it still looks a bit fuzzy for some reason....
I think you ought to consider keeping a few forces in the deck against merfolk, just to deal with the TNN. Once it hits the table it just chews you up, and you only have one verdict
Yeah. I've respected people when they've praised stand still, but it's really just a 2 mana draw 3. Which is good but with the hoops you've got to jump through, is it legacy good?
Out of 13 mana-producing lands, 6 of them aren't Islands. You need lands 2 and 3 to come into play untapped. Even if everything goes right, the spells you want to recur are Shark Typhoon and Standstill, not your instants and sorceries. It just doesn't fit the plan, Hall of Heliod is doing that work for this deck.
ok i genenuenly think it would be interesting to have a deck that is playing around 3-4 Supreme Verdic. its one double white and yo go ore into that with the story teller. plus its really good against a lot of different decks.
