I've come to notice that there's been an uptick in the industry of being asked to work for free. More specifically, being expected to work for free. I also feel that it's not a topic that we talk about about enough. This is nothing new as a creative business owner, or even a small business owner. Setting boundaries in business can be hard. My advice is simple, know your worth, then add tax.

Me watching this back and realizing an made an editing mistake at the end: 👁👄👁. As much as I say the outro, if I don't say it just right I will repeat it lol. Nonetheless, the older I get, the less I fear retaliation for standing up for what I believe in. We talk a lot about the craft on this platform; however, it's just as important for us to talk about the business side of things. While I can only speak to the plight of photographers and filmmakers, this struggle is akin to all small business owners. There's never a problem when working for free, but there's a problem when you're expected to work for free. Do I think this is going to change? No. Although, I have noticed a lot of younger people do respect the arts a lot more. That said, the more we know how to set boundaries and stand on business... AND THE MORE WE TEACH OTHERS how to set boundaries, the less this disease will plague the lives of small business owners.

This is exactly what I needed to hear right now. Have a client who thinks my price is too high meanwhile they're opening up a 3rd location 😅

Yes thank you! I wish you could hear the tone of my voice. It's upsetting sometimes. Like that $500 you're talking about i've had similar experiences. That's two days of work plus editing we're probably going to end up working three to 5 days. Maybe longer depending on the event and what was expected. Video even more so. Great stuff . And yeah I didn't charge my sister for her wedding. I think a lot of it is really.. "Just to give some of them at least a benefit of the doubt" they may not understand what it takes. So, I generally "if I think they don't know" all kind of explain some of the process off hand in a way that I try to seemingly organically bring up. Mentioning the edit mentioning lighting having them over here the price of some piece of equipment. I don't know I'm really just beginning in this world. But I ran into similar things in my last business as well. I think sometimes in all industries there are people that just don't know better and then there's the people that are trying to "take what they can and give nothing back" .. Anyways rant over I meant it to be shorter but I got carried away with the typing.

Also I don't understand why somebody would contact you to do a sponsored video and then not have a budget to sponsor. That seems ludicrous to me. Does that mean craters are doing so called Sponsored videos for free. That almost seems like the creator is sponsoring the company.. Wow.. I hope this video gets millions of views.

@@seanmartinflix I get everything that you said 100%! Benefit of the doubt is so important in some cases because there are some people who really don’t know. That being said companies 100% do you know lol. I I think there’s also a mentality that if people go to a small business that they can get some thing for cheaper, but the reality is that we are generally more expensive, because we don’t have the efficiency to the lack of manpower as big companies and manpower is so scarce in our industry that it would still be expensive lol. As far as companies not paying creators... I know some of my peers with bigger platforms have complained of the same thing. The same type of emails. There are companies out there willing to pay for sure, but I've been disheartened by some companies recently. I have noticed very specific language in certain videos to, where someone will say that company so and so sent the product instead of sponsored the video. I also think that they may shell out cash for platforms with huge followings, but also in this climate, it would be almost social suicide to not do that. It only takes one post from a big creator to have a mob coming after you. but the point is that all creative individuals should be paid for any promotion work.

That sometimes brings problems, with someone opinion on the product, I don't like to work for free either, although I understand in part your opinion, now, the question would be, how much one should charge?
@sidneybakergreen
@sidneybakergreen 4 месяца назад
The industry standard rate factoring in skill. There's a lot of ways to figure out what most people are charging. For example, ChatGPT funny enough, if you have it roll play spits out figures. That chat bot is trained on what people have given it.
