I've been wearing my Knox Armour Urbane Pro shirt non-stop since I got it last year, and I recently put it to the test.
For reference, I wear size small and I'm 5'10"/178cm.
Update: Knox Armour has offered to replace my jacket due to the tearing, so I should receive a new one this summer.
Safe riding everyone!

Just bought myself the pro utility version for the summer and it’s soooooo comfortable and the level of armour is amazing especially the back pad is huge but comfortable 👍

Thanks Megan. As a person who has 12 feet of closet dedicated to riding gear, being able to layer is a very nice feature for those who don't want 12 feet of gear. LOL! Nice that you can wear fashion jackets over the protection for those times when you don't want to look like you are in full gear. Hope you are staying safe and can get out and ride soon.

Got it in the mail !!! After some mixup Knox came through with two day delivery. Wow they really are great people there. I purchased the pants also so I can wear shorts etc and be safe. It all fits great, ( except that I need to lose some middle real estate, I look like a Snake that swallowed a Basketball ). But that’s ok. Just another project !! I wore the shirt under my VPD bike jacket after I removed it’s armour. Works fantastic. Thank you for all your help Megan, keep Happy, keep safe, and above all.... keep Riding !!!

Thank you for this detailed review you went deep even turning it inside out. I've been hesitant between this one and the Zephyr Pro. I'm sure this jacket is even more resistant with the MK2 version but I believe Zephyr Pro will be my choice

Recently got this piece (Knox is having a great combo sale on the urbane pro and an outer jacket right now) partly based on the strength of this review. Seriously the most comfortable and confidence inspiring armour... I ended up stripping the armour out of my leather jacket and wearing this under it for the colder months just cause the armour is more snug under so many layers than it would be on my outer jacket. Love it. Many thanks and subscribed.

Great review. I’ve got some Knox gear too. I bought the Knox action shirt but I got a free upgrade to level 2 armour. He difference is the action shirt claims no abarasion resistance. So I always wear it with leathers or heavy textile outer layers. We’re based in Nha Trang Vietnam now until we can go home to Mongolia. I bought a bull-it covec airflow undersuit and put the Knox armour in that. It’s far more protective than the Knox urbane pro or even zephyr pro in terms of impact abrasion protection. Plus it can be layered or worn alone. It’s now my daily jacket in Vietnam because it flows a ton of air but without the weakness of mesh. Almost any mesh, except one that incorporates aramid (or covec which is similar) is a very weak link. The cuffs of mesh garments are a very common failure point in polyester mesh garments because they are pulled on and off constantly. I believe Knox may do the right thing and replace your jacket under warranty. Love your channel.
@MeganKaptein
@MeganKaptein 4 года назад
Wait, you mean I wasn’t the only person in Vietnam who wore motorcycle gear?! I thought surely I was the only rider in the entire country who geared up haha. Martin, thanks for weighing in on the topic and providing your suggestion of the Bull-It Covec. That’s a new one to me, so I’m definitely going to research the availability here in Canada. Since you’re based in Nha Trang, you understand the importance of breathability that some people living in cooler climates will probably never quite get. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Safe riding out there!

Loved hearing your take on the jacket, even being able to offer up a real world crash review! I got this jacket along with the chest protector not too long ago, and though I was very hesitant to buy it at first because it cost far more than the mesh jackets I was also looking into, the fit and finish, the fit, and the malleability and comfort of the armor, far exceeded my expectations. Agreed on the chest protector awkwardness. The jacket fits my body so well it’s like a good pair of riding gloves to me, but stick that chest protector in, and it looks and feels like an afterthought with the way it protrudes outward. I’d say though, above all, it’s the versatility that easily pays for itself and rightly justifies the cost for me. Knowing I can use this as a stand-alone jacket in the summer heat as opposed to being tempted to squidding out, while also serving as a great underlayer beneath my main sport jacket in adding that extra bit of impact protection, is what leaves me completely satisfied and not at all regretful of spending the extra cash.

Hi Megan. That was a great review. I'm glad the jacket protected you when you went down. Having good gear is something I decided I should look at too and after a bit of searching on Amazon I ordered a pair of riding pants as well as a jacket that both had pretty good ratings and reviews. I was really happy when they came that they actually fit. Mine aren't Knox (ILM for a jacket and HWK for pants) but all in all I like them very much. The one thing I found very uncomfortable though were the knee and elbow pads so I actually removed them. I wasn't so worried about going down as I was about comfort and weather protection. I guess I could always find more comfortable pads if I decide to put some back in at some point. Have a great day and keep up the excellent videos.
@MeganKaptein
@MeganKaptein 4 года назад
Glad to know you invested in getting some riding gear! It is definitely worth the investment, in my opinion. I'd highly recommend you look into the Knox protectors are replacements. I've used some pretty bad quality ones over the years. Especially riding in cold weather, some cheap protectors become so hard they actually caused bruises just from wearing them. The Knox ones, like I mentioned, are the softest and nicest ones I've encountered, and my elbow wasn't bruised at all when I hit the rocks, so I give the pads 10/10!

Just got mine yesterday. Removed the back pad because I wear a hellite Turtle airbag vest. Quite an amazing material in that pad. It is super soft , but goes very hard if you hit it with something solid. Scratching my head how material scientists came up with that. I am pumped with the layering possibilities. If super hot, I can put my cooling vest under. MY Warm and safe heated vest fits decently underneath if cold. My Gore Tex outer Layer fits great over everything. So minimal stuff and I can deal with Freezing to boiling on the same ride and have VG protection. BTW, you can upgrade the elbows and shoulder pads to be CE2 like the back pad. Increases bulk a bit in those areas. They should take your design improvements seriously, as they are spot on.

The cut and color coordination are similar to my black and silver Canadian made SeaQuest diving suit in college. I am 5'11" and weighted in at 165 lbs back then. The fit was perfect and I kept the suit hoping one day it will fit again. I am 30 lbs heavier now and there is no way I can squeeze by rotund belly into it. I love the concept of dressing in layers and the mesh structure will allow the air to flow through keeping you cool on the summer rides. For the spring and fall seasons, I would throw a leather jacket over it with all the ventilation zippers wide open. For winter riding, it would be best to close the ventilation pockets. To be highly visible, I purchase a lime green construction vest with wide reflective panels. My fellow office mates commented that they can recognize me miles away. Bright colors on the roads are getting popular due to the ongoing shift toward safety.

It has taken me several years to finally pull the trigger on an Aerostich Roadcrafter R3 one piece riding suit. Wander over to Duluth Minnesota when things open up. I was there this past February and spent almost an hour with one of their staff test fitting several suit (they have several flavors - and two piece setups too). Pockets will not be a problem! I don't think any of their gear is "flattering", but as a buddy said, you dress for the crash. :^) You can get real good fitting kit, but then it limits your layering options. If you don't ride there, they have the remains of an old Honda FT500 Ascot to sit on and see how gear fits while on a bike.
@MeganKaptein
@MeganKaptein 4 года назад
Those pieces are certainly an investment, but a price you'd no doubt regret paying in the unfortunate event of a crash!
@ronboe6325
@ronboe6325 4 года назад
@@MeganKaptein Someone once made the comment, it's like destroying a very expensive helmet in a get off. It does the job - however; Aerostich can fix the garment in a lot of cases - you can't repair a helmet! I had a crash several years ago that broke my collar bone. Helmet was declared a lost and the pants (Road Gear - no longer in business, he retired) were shot. Still wear the jacket from time to time! But I didn't have any road rash nor major bruising. But ya, took several years to get the courage to pony up the cash. :^) That said, it appears the GOOD stuff is expensive, and compared to when I started riding, there is a LOT of good stuff out there now.

Nice review! I too have Knox jacket, but Action Armored Shirt, a bit cheaper version of your's. I like layering capability, it is a good fit and overall good quality. Bad sides are that, as you have pointed, you have to wrestle to remove the pads. Also, my back pad got broken, possibly out pulling in and out, because, fortunately, I have not been involved in any crashes.
@MeganKaptein

@@MeganKaptein As I wrote my comment, I just thought of it. And yes, I have just registered my item, though 2 years old, and I plan to send back my back pad. Thank you for inspiration! ;-) But again, due to layering capability (my primary motivation for buying it), it is very practical thing, you can wear it solely when, say, temps are over 30C, and you can put over it any good urban looking Gore-Tex jacket, which I do... and than you have decent crash protection and wind/weather protection...

Owning one myself, I agree with most everything you said. I knew a front chest protector was available, yet I never put 2+2 together to know why on Earth there is a chunk of Velcro hanging in the front on the left side. I ripped a shoulder pad pulling it out of the pocket. Now I know to be careful and not rush the process and don't force the pads out. They are on the Third version now with thinner lighter pads and larger pockets. You say it fits rather tight.. You are 5'10" wearing a small and I am 5'4" and need a Large .. I was wondering about that jacket on your ride vlogs, thanks for the review & info. I struggle in Thailand to find anything bearable to wear or ride in the heat, and I've got the scars to prove it! I hired a Honda X-ADV as a prospective new bike, as there's no such thing as a test drive in Thailand..., but the heat between the legs from the engine was uncomfortable. I feel as I have little option but to settle for a scooter with the engine on the swing arm, e.g. Honda Forza 300. What about the cargo trousers you wear, are they cool enough in the tropical heat? Do you have any recommendations for boots and gloves? Thanks.

@MeganKaptein

Hi JJ. You can add the chest protector, but the jacket already comes with the back protector, shoulder and elbow pads. I don't work for Knox or any retailer for that matter, so I'm not an expert but I believe that if you're wearing this as a base layer, you would want to fit true to the size because you want the armour to be snug and not move around if you crash.

Hello @Megan Kaptein I am the guy that hit a deer last Aug when it was 85 F out and went for a 50 MPH slide.. I wanted a really light Jacket that still had anti abrasion material .. I saw your video and you told me your jacket was from Knox.. So funny I had spent so much time looking for a mesh amrom shirt even on Revzilla and never found any. Other than for Motocross and that was not anti abrasion material. Once I used the Knox name in the search it even popped up on Revzilla which is one place I had seached before I had heard of Knox.. Revzill sells this brand thus I don't have to worry about paying for freight from the UK.. You did not have a crash you had a drop. Though the padding can be nice for a drop. I was wanting to race snowmobiles cross Country .. The more or less require you to wear a very bulky Tech vest.. I never thought about it but in a hard crash if you break your ribs you can puncure a lung or lungs very serious injury . There is an Air Vest that is very no obrtusive you could wear over your light jacket if you really wanted way more protection and still be cool.. I'll look for a link. www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/spidi-air-dps-airbag-vest www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/klim-ai-1-airbag-vest At this point the KLIM looks better to me , good neck and chest support

Oh man, Mike, so glad you survived that deer accident last summer. We’ve got a lot of wildlife in BC too do that’s a valid concern riding here. That’s actually the main reason that I ordered the chest protector (which unfortunately was not to my liking.) In the case of my crash, I didn’t actually get into the details because the focus is on the gear, not the crash itself, but I wasn’t actually rolling the camera when I had my big tumble, but I had the camera going the second time which wasn’t at all consequential. The first time I was clipping at a decent rate while standing on the pegs, and made a rookie move that resulted in me bailing out on some pretty sharp rocks. It was bad enough to bend the handlebars, knock my boot off and sprain my thumb, so I would definitely consider that a crash, although “drop” certainly sounds a lot more gentle and that’s what I told my mother haha. Good point about Revzilla for bypassing the duty fees. I paid almost $50 on my end to get it past customs buying directly from Knox. 😔

@@MeganKaptein I already had armored jacket and pants but more for cooler weather.. I simply did not have anything for the Hot days. Last summer I asked you what you were wearing and you replied Knox. I was looking for just an armored shirt with anti abrasion mesh .. I was wearing a cheap chinese mesh armoed shirt really for skate boarders and peddle bikers.. The mesh got ripped up in my crash. The Top of my forearm was mesh .. the elbows were plastic armor and worked just fine but my arm was trapped under my stomach and I slid down the road feet first on my stomach arm trapped under my stomach never got a scratch on my helmet.. So after you told me about Knox , I looked on their Web site and found out they pretty much invented the armored padded riding gear Industry .. I think Leathers were just a layer of leather before Knox.. The Knox mesh shirt with armor and Anti Abrasian padding is $300.00 at Revzilla so free shipping of course.. Revilla is in PA and Nevada , thanks to knew laws I know have to pay my 6% Michigan sales tax.. Have you seen the youtube channel FourtNine ? I think Ryan more or less works for FourtNine motorcycle Gear of Canada.. It is the Candian Version of RevZilla .. The two companies reccomend the other Company if you live in the same Country as them . www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/knox-urbane-pro-shirt www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/knox-urbane-pro-utility-shirt A layer of windproof warmth .. I now have two light jackets that flow air and have a water proof wind proor liner for rain or cooler temps . www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/knox-wind-buddy-jacket The cheap Jacket on close out sale at the end of the season .. has a built in back protector.. The Mesh one that I piad like $259.00 for I had to pay like $48.00 more for a 3 layer pice of foam for a back protecter very akward and uncomfortable and I feel totally robbed to pay that much for foam padding.. I use just one layer not 3 layers.. they were glued together just pulled them apart.. www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/knox-zephyr-pro-womens-jacket Knox Urban Pro Utility Short $329.00 www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/knox-urbane-pro-utility-shirt

Paul, that's very thoughtful of you. Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to reach out to them on my behalf. Knox does have some kind of warranty on the product, but I'm not sure if it would cover that issue or not. In their defence, I do want to point that I have worn this piece a LOT. I've probably put it on and taken it off hundreds of times and put it in the wash a handful of times since I got it, so while a year might not sound like a long time, this jacket has had a LOT of use. Knox makes great armour and gloves but awful outer garments. I crash test clothing for research and textiles are really, really bad at impact abrasion, with some rare exceptions. Basically the Knox textiles are decent armour holders but offer no reasonable impact abrasion protection. For example, almost all polyesters and nylons last about 1-3 metres of impact and slide. Adding kevlar can help to get that to 10 metres depending. Whereas, double layers of cowhide in impact and sliding zones can last 200-300 metres. The good news is that level 2 armour is also very impact abrasion resistant. I tried a drop test where the outer fabric was 1680d (heavyweight) ballistic nylon. Over a D3o pad. The textile failed in 8 metres but the pad lasted another 150 metres slide until failing. Also SAS-TEC level 2 lasted 180 metres. So as long as the jacket doesn’t tear (it might) and you only slide on armour, you’ll be fine. Finally, my wife and I are in Nha Trang and we wear perforated leather jackets all year round with no problems at all. It’s typically 34C and 80-90% humidity here in summer. As long as we’re riding above walking speed, we’re both comfortable.

Because if you fall the pocket content can and will hurt you, keys or anything pointy should not be place in a motorbike jacket or pants. When you talked about the armor at the beginning of your video, I was initially going to ask you about if it comes with a chest protector; since I noticed in your other videos that is it "see through" and very little protection in the front. Then when you showed the chest piece later, my thoughts were pretty much the same as yours. That is not a chest protector for women, at all. Unless you're a adult woman that is flat chested, that looks like it's a men's chest protector. They should do two things for sure your the lady riders out there. 1) There is no on bra for all girls/women, so there should be several size/shape options for you to choose. 2) As you mention with it being flimsy, either A) make it lake a sports bra, where you can wear it over your clothing or; B) Two armor cups that slide into each side of the jacket, with some sort of adjustability to be positioned and fit your breasts properly and comfortably. Along with the one cup having an extension piece reach the other cup to protect the center of your chest allowing you to zip up your jacket easily. I was surprised that you're already showing some tears on your jacket after only a year. That is one of the main reasons why I will only buy leather gear, durability. I've had my riding jacket for 10 years now, and the only thing that I've had a problem with is the zipper. And that just started this year. I understand the cleaning bit, however, I do enjoy getting the brush and spray out, then rubbing leather protector to back in to make is shiny. Another thing is that leather will barely stain at worst case (my street leathers are all white), not something textiles can be cleaned of very easily. The crash and re-use factor is pretty good too. I've crashed in my racing leathers at 70ish, 50ish, and 100km/h, and only after my last crash did I need to get some repairs done. Crashing at the track is also what makes me realize how much protection and durability leather gives you. I know your tumble in Vietnam was not very damaging, but if you had a crash on the highway back home on the west coast, do you thing your gear would last to let you get the rest of the way home, or finish your trip? Thanks for your insight and experience on the jacket, and the female's side and problems with gear. Do you have any other plans for some videos showing the hidden gems in your city and area for those who would come out there, and even your locals? My wife and I went up Sea to Sky Highway, Stanley Park, Iona Beach (one of your previous videos), Granville Island and Capilano Suspension Bridge. I also did all the scene locations from Tron Legacy on my first trip out there (minus the harbor, being company property). Burn rubber, not your soul.
@MeganKaptein
@MeganKaptein 4 года назад
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and leave such a thorough comment. I hope that Knox reads and takes note of your suggestion.! There is definitely room for improvement, particularly with the chest protector and I think you've got some great ideas how to execute that. You're absolutely right that my crash was luckily fairly inconsequential, although my legs were still pretty beat up from some of the sharp rocks I landed on, even with full gear on, so it certainly did leave me pondering what would happen in the event of a high speed crash. There's no doubt that leather is the cream of the crop for high speed riding. You never see MotoGP racers wearing mesh on the track! I often do wear a leather jacket on top of my armour for extra abrasion resistance if I know I'm going to be highway riding. However, in hot climates like Thailand, this jacket was truly a life saver. Heat stroke a genuine concern riding in intense heat, and I honestly think I would have passed out wearing full leather in that environment. Thanks also for your suggestions on featuring more day rides around town. I think it's a great idea as I don't have any plans on doing any big tours in the next few weeks. :) Have a great weekend, and safe riding out there!

I’m quite skeptical of their abrasion testing to get AAA certification. If that sleeve wore out so quickly just taking on/off your jacket, I can’t imagine what it would do on a 5 second slide across the asphalt. There is no miracle material here. I think the Klim Indiction jacket (rates AA) would fare better on a slide across the pavement.

The CE rating only applies to the armour, if it was a CE approved jacket it would be A, AA or AAA rated to include abrasion resistance. It's meant to be worn under a non armoured, abrasion resistant, jacket like an old school leather or maybe a Dyneema shirt. Still very useful though.

Hi, nice to meet you. I'm going to buy a mesh jacket this weekend, and I'll refer to your video and buy it. Thank you for the good video. My CB500X has been uploaded to my profile picture.^^

Ohh very nice! Congrats again on the new wheels. Yes, I think a mesh jacket will be useful in Korea's heat!

Wow that chest protector really is lackluster for women! I know ATWYLD now makes an armored shirt with a chest protector in it; they do it in 2 pieces and that looks like it works as a female cut much better. I haven't tried it out though, these things can really add up $$$
@MeganKaptein
@MeganKaptein 4 года назад
Isn't that the truth!? I thought I'd be saving money by riding a motorcycle but then I spend hundreds upon hundreds on gear haha. Thanks for the tip about ATWYLD. I'm going to check that out!

What can I say, I think the Jacket looks good on you, very nice and figure hugging, I'm surprised you've only had it one year and the jacket is started to deteriorate a bit, I reckon a call to the manufacturer to explain the problems your having may result in a replacement as I'm sure the warranty must go beyond 1 year. Nice videos keep up the good work, look after yourself and stay safe. P.s. Is the bike you have a 500 or a 750?

Thanks again for advocating for me, Paul. As for the bike, it's a 2013 Honda CB500X.

Hello, thanks for the review but i wana tell something too people if you do only road be care maybe for the off-road okay, why ? it's a Class "A" protective gear = 1sec at 45km/h for the abrasion résistance so be care. The backpad is lvl 2 that is nice but the rest are only 1. If you buy this gear for the "resistance & safetyness" maybe you can get a better gear for this price... Regard's
@MeganKaptein
@MeganKaptein 4 года назад
Nicolas, thanks for pointing that out about Class A. I actually didn't know that about the slide time until you and another viewer pointed that out. I guess it's best to wear as a base layer when going at high speed.
@nicolasavramski2386
@nicolasavramski2386 4 года назад
@@MeganKaptein You welcome, i thinks best for road is a AA but only few gear are AAA (almost all leather) but you can "upgrade" your class A a little with elbow pad lvl 2 because a lot of time when you crash the pad can protect from abrasion as well before impact point rach the jacket. And for the record the test are made without the pad. Just DON'T BUY gear with "URBAN LEVEL" because it's a waste of money they don't protect (less than 0,5sec resistance) but can be sell with "motorcycle gear" if you add some pocket for pad... (scam industrie...)

Hi Megan, I've got the chest protector for my Urbane Pro , it's the male version and it looks exactly the same as your female version! I agree, the chest protector seems like an afterthought. Still worth having though, protection wise 👍 Think your review matches my thoughts on it too, though you've had yours a bit longer. Will be interesting to see if mine wears in the same way. Anyway, interesting review!
