Here's an interesting thought: If one piece of the emerald is missing the island falls, but when it is restored, the island rises back to the sky. If you were to take one piece of the master emerald off the entire gem, and pull it back and forth from its prior position, you could theoretically have the island fall roughly at a fraction of the rate of gravity, and possibly, if the island is positioned in the right location, have it become a part of a greater more stable land mass.
